Description
The present invention relates to a method according to the preamble of claim 1 and an apparatus for carrying out the method.
This generic term refers to a state of the art as it became known, for example, from brochure 35.0007, «inert gas welding», published by the applicant in manual form, on pages 84 and 85. Experiments and applications with this direct current welding of aluminum with the tungsten electrode at the negative pole, has shown that during welding, despite the negative polarity of the electrode, the oxide skin of the aluminum to be welded is destroyed, which is due to the high heat concentration, especially when using helium or an argon-melium mixture is returned as a protective gas. In addition, since higher welding speeds, less distortion and a smaller heat-affected zone compared to AC welding of aluminum have been determined with this DC welding process, DC welding of aluminum is particularly suitable for these advantages, especially for fully mechanized welding.
In the case of fully mechanized welding in particular, however, the DC welding arc must be properly ignited so that the automation effect is not worsened or even canceled by non-ignited arcs. Practice has shown that when DC welding aluminum with the tungsten electrode at the negative pole, a reproducible ignition behavior cannot be achieved. This is attributed in particular to the fact that, due to the cold tungsten electrode at the beginning of a welding process and the negative polarity, an arc does not start at a fixed point (electrode tip), but rather the starting point “dances” on the surface of the electrode and moves away from it Electrode tip moved away.
Attempts have been made to improve this unsatisfactory ignition behavior by changing the electrode composition, in particular by increasing the thorium content usually provided in the tungsten electrodes. As studies have shown, better ignition properties could not be achieved with such electrodes either.
The object of the invention is to provide a method and a device of the type mentioned at the outset in order to avoid the disadvantages of known designs and in particular to improve the ignition behavior in the case of direct current welding with a tungsten electrode at the negative pole, the use in fully mechanized welding systems also being sought.
To achieve this object, it is proposed according to the present invention that the electrode and workpiece be reversed for a short time in order to ignite the arc, such that the electrode is connected to the positive pole and the workpiece is connected to the negative pole of the power source and that, in the reversed state, an ignition pulse between Electrode and workpiece is fed.
This results in a safe and reproducible ignition behavior, which is attributed in particular to the fact that, as a result of the positive polarity of the electrode in connection with the ignition pulse, an electric arc attaches to the tip of the electrode without «dancing around». This causes the electrode to heat in a punctiform manner in the shortest possible time and enables the formation of a stable burning arc. It has proven to be particularly advantageous if the duration of the polarity reversal is only a fraction of a second and in particular less than a second. The time of the polarity reversal is determined by the type of shielding gas and the electrode diameter as well as the welding current set, whereby the duration of the polarity reversal is shorter for small welding currents and smaller electrode diameters than for small welding currents and electrodes with larger diameters.
Preferred embodiments of the subject matter of the invention are described below with reference to the drawings, which show the circuit diagram of two devices for performing the method.
1 and 2 each have a current source 10, 20 with a positive pole 11 and a negative pole 12. Both poles 11, 12 are connected via a pole switch 13 to a non-melting welding torch electrode 14 and a workpiece 15. Furthermore, an ignition device 16 is connected to the electrode 14 and the workpiece 15. The structure of the current source 10 and the structure of the burner 14 and that of the ignition device 16 are generally known and will therefore not be explained any longer. For example, a current source sold under the name MULTIWIG can be used as current source 10. An electronic pulse generator according to DE-PS 1615 363 can be used as the ignition device. The pole switch 13 has two switching contacts 13a, 13b, which are actuated by a timing relay 17 as a function of control pulses (line 18) from the current source 10, 20. With 19 a line for actuating the ignitor 16 is designated. In FIG. 1, the ignition takes place via the current source 10. In order to be able to advantageously use a pole-changing switch 13 for lower powers, the ignition is carried out via an auxiliary current source 20 in the exemplary embodiment according to FIG. 2, this current source 20 only having to be designed for ignition power . After reversing the polarity of the auxiliary ignition current source 20, the main current source 10 is then switched on for welding via a control line 21.

In the position of the switch contacts 13a, 13b shown in FIGS. 1 and 2, the negative pole 11 of the current source is connected to the burner electrode 14 and the positive pole 12 of the current source is connected to the workpiece 15. The contacts 13a, 13b are thus in the welding position.
According to the present invention, the electrode 14 and the workpiece 15 are reversed in order to ignite the arc, for which purpose a pulse is emitted via the line 18 to the timing relay 17, as a result of which the contacts 13a and 13b are brought into the ignition position shown by broken lines. To trigger the ignition process, a corresponding pulse is given to the ignition device 16 via the line 19, whereby the latter is actuated and supplies the ignition pulses to the electrode 14 and the workpiece 15. The polarity reversal of the electrode 14 and the workpiece 15 carried out for the ignition is in the range of 5 fractions of a second, this polarity reversal time being adjustable, for example, on the timing relay 17 or on the current source 10. After ignition has taken place, the contacts 13a, 13b are brought back into the welding position via the timing relay 17 and the pole changeover switches 13, and in the example according to FIG. 2oo the current source 10 switched into the welding position is switched on.
