Description
The invention relates to a process for decaffeinating green coffee, in which the green coffee is extracted in the presence of water with a gaseous supercritical solvent, the solvent absorbing part of the water and the caffeine, in which the caffeine is subsequently removed from the loaded solvent by lowering the Pressure and / or the temperature or increase in temperature above the extraction temperature is separated, the dissolved water also separating from the solvent, and finally the caffeine-free solvent is returned to the extraction stage and the partially dried coffee is subsequently dried.
A decaffeination process used in practice consists of the following process steps: pretreatment of the raw coffee (e.g. by disintegrating the coffee beans with steam at elevated temperature), liquid extraction of the coffee beans with solvents such as di- and trichlorethylene, chloroform and benzene, removal of the solvent from the Green coffee by evaporation, drying the moist green coffee. With this known method it cannot be ruled out that solvent residues remain in the green coffee and that a certain denaturation of the green coffee occurs.
Daher kann nicht ausgeschlossen werden, From DE-PS 2 005 293 a method for decaffeinating green coffee is known, in which the caffeine from the green coffee with moist carbon dioxide in a supercritical state, in particular at a temperature of 40 to 80 ° C and a pressure of 120 to 180 atm, is extracted. The caffeine is removed from the circulating carbon dioxide stream either by adsorption on activated carbon or by expansion. From DE-PS 2 005 293 it is apparent that the extraction of the caffeine by carbon dioxide is due to the fact that carbon dioxide is not inert towards an aqueous caffeine solution. Therefore, it cannot be ruled out
DE-OS 2 634 535 discloses a process for decaffeinating green coffee in which the green coffee is extracted with moist supercritical nitrous oxide and in which the caffeine is removed from the supercritical gas phase by an ion exchanger. When using nitrous oxide, safety risks can arise since the nitrous oxide is quite reactive and reacts violently with many compounds.
Als Gase sollen bei diesem Verfahren gesättigte oder ungesättigte niedere Kohlenwasserstoffe, chlorierte und/ Finally, DE-OS 1 493 190 proposes a process for the separation of liquid and / or solid organic substance mixtures, in which the substance mixture with an inert gas under supercritical conditions of temperature 15 and pressure in the temperature range up to 100 ° C above it treated critical temperature and after separation of the loaded supercritical gas phase, the compounds contained therein are recovered by relaxation and / or temperature increase. Saturated or unsaturated lower hydrocarbons, chlorinated and / or
However, it can be seen from examples 61 and 62 cited in DE-OS 1 493 190 that substances 25 which are dissolved in water or are present in an aqueous emulsion are very difficult to take up in an inert supercritical gas.
The invention has for its object to provide a simple, reliable method for decaffeinating raw coffee, which guarantees a high caffeine yield with high purity of the caffeine and also avoids denaturing the other components of the raw coffee.
The object on which the invention is based is surprisingly achieved in that moist green coffee is extracted with propane as solvent at a pressure of 43 to 300 bar and a temperature of 97 to 150 ° C. The expert could not expect that caffeine can be extracted from green coffee in the presence of water with supercritical 40 propane, since according to DE-OS
In überraschender Weise wurde aber gefunden, dass derartige Entscheidungen trotz der erforderlichen hohen Arbeits 1,493,190 an extraction from the aqueous phase with supercritical inert gases appears to be difficult and since caffeine extraction according to DE-PS 2 005 293 and DE-OS 2 634 535 only involves the gases carbon dioxide, which act as 45 polar solvents in the presence of water and nitrous oxide, which are not inert towards the caffeine. By creating the method according to the invention, the prejudice is overcome that inert, over-50 critical solvents are unsuitable for extracting the caffeine from moist green coffee, because the extraction of the moist green coffee with the inert, non-polar, supercritical solvent propane results in a high caffeine yield to achieve high purity of the caffeine and a gentle treatment of the green coffee, whereby in particular the other ingredients of the green coffee remain unchanged. This advantageous effect was not to be expected in view of the known prior art. The person skilled in the art was also prevented from creating the process according to the invention because the 60 caffeine extraction with CO 2 or N 20 only requires temperatures of 40 to 80 ° C., while the caffeine extraction takes place with supercritical propane at 97 to 150 ° C. The person skilled in the art is prevented from using high temperatures when extracting caffeine, 65 because he knows that other ingredients can also be extracted from green coffee at high temperatures. Surprisingly, it was found that such decisions were made despite the high work required

Temperatures do not occur during caffeine extraction with supercritical propane, because the caffeine decaffeinated according to the method of the invention can be completely satisfactory in terms of taste.
According to the invention, the method can be carried out particularly advantageously if the extraction is carried out at a pressure of 100 to 150 bar and a temperature of 97 to 120 ° C., if the moist green coffee to be extracted has a water content of 35 to 40% by weight. -% and if the loaded solvent is washed with water during the separation 10 of the caffeine.
The subject matter of the invention is explained in more detail below using an exemplary embodiment. 231 g of raw coffee (unroasted beans) with a caffeine content of 1.15% by weight are brewed with water or steam for as long as 15
Die Coffein-Ausbeute beträgt 75,6 %. moist until their water content is 35 to 40 wt .-%. The moist green coffee is then extracted in a heatable pressure vessel for 6 hours at 115 bar and 120 ° C with propane, which has a purity of 99.5%. Part of the water is also extracted from the green coffee during the extraction. After the extraction, the green coffee is removed from the pressure vessel and dried, while the supercritical water and caffeine-containing propane is expanded to 10 bar in a separator and cooled to 42.5 ° C. In the separator, a stream of water is counteracted to the propane stream, which washes out the caffeine from the propane, at the same time the water contained in the propane stream is separated. The caffeine is obtained from the aqueous phase by crystallization. The caffeine yield is 75.6%.
