Description
The invention relates to a filter material made of an open-pore, flexible foam carrier and adsorber particles carried by its pore walls, and to a method and a device for producing such a filter material.
In the design and manufacture of protective equipment, in particular protective suits in the human field, 35 but also in medical device construction, air conditioning, water treatment and aircraft construction, there is a need to provide flexible filters that are able to prevent the passage of toxic or harmful vapors and gases .
40 This results, for example, in a known filter material of the type mentioned at the outset (German Offenlegungsschrift 2,400,827), the particular advantage of the known filter material being that it offers only a relatively low resistance to gases flowing through. 45 However, where in addition to gaseous or vaporous pollutants also occur in the liquid phase, a heavy pre-filter was necessary to absorb liquids, so that the striking advantages of the flexible surface filter, such as low weight, flexibility, low thermal insulation and high ventilation, get lost.
Especially with protective sets that are used in difficult circumstances, such as fires and accidents in chemical industrial plants, it was previously necessary, depending on the predominant 55 pollutants, to use suitable sets, for example a light protective suit with which the Staying in dense pollutant mist should be possible, the filter material mentioned at the outset, which was extremely advantageous in itself, could only be used to a limited extent, since this filter material opposes liquid pollutants with only a slight resistance.
. Starting from this prior art, it is an object of the invention to further develop the filter material mentioned at the outset in such a way that it receives a higher separation efficiency than liquid pollutants, but without reducing the separation capacity against vapors and gases despite the filter material being soaked or the air passage resistance being significant is increased.

This object is achieved according to the invention in that additional porous adsorber grains are embedded in the large pores of the foam carrier. These stored adsorber grains do not significantly impede the gas flow through the pores, but due to their porosity they are able to absorb liquid and adsorb pollutants, even if practically all adsorber grains are soaked with liquid, the gas permeability of the filter material according to the invention is not is significantly impaired.
Thus, it is not only possible to build flexible air or gas filters that have a considerable absorption capacity for liquids, but it is also possible to use the filter material as a liquid filter, since the effect of the porous adsorber grains increases the dwell time of liquid elements becomes. In addition, the filter material according to the invention is able to absorb and retain considerable amounts of liquid pollutant without the liquid pollutant penetrating the filter.
As far as liquid pollutant evaporates in the adsorber grains, these vapors are adsorbed by the adsorber particles carried by the pore walls.
The filter material according to the invention thus succeeds, on the one hand, in allowing high ventilation, but on the other hand, to retain skin and respiratory toxins and metal-attacking gases and liquids by means of sieving action and surface forces and / or to render them chemically harmless.
The air and / or liquid flowing past the adsorber grains is rolled from one pore layer into the next deeper layer by the foam-specific arrangement of the pore systems of the foam carrier, whereby they are channeled past a large number of adsorber particles and adsorber grains, which act as sedimentation sieves and pollutants from the air and / or discard liquid.
It is fundamentally possible to dimension the adsorber grains in such a way that several grains are arranged in occupied pores; However, in order to prevent that, despite the connecting channels between individual large pores of the foam carrier, adsorber grains can easily get from one pore to the next, it is proposed according to one embodiment of the invention that the adsorber grains are dimensioned such that they largely fill the large pores of the foam carrier. Where a particularly high level of liquid pollutants is to be expected, where there is a constructive need to make the foam carrier only relatively thin, or where the air resistance of the filter material plays a relatively minor role, it is basically possible to practically all pores of the foam carrier with adsorber grains to occupy; it may also be advantageous to use a foam carrier material that provides a good ventilation effect via abundant micropores, so that all large pores can be occupied with adsorber grains without significantly impairing the ventilation effect. According to a further embodiment of the invention, however, it is advantageous that only 20 to 50% of the large pores of the foam carrier are occupied by the adsorber grains, so that approximately every second to every fifth pore absorbs such an adsorber grain, with a large number of pore layers located one below the other , whose cavities are irregularly filled with such adsorbers, but a high degree of sieving is achieved with low air resistance.
It is fundamentally possible to design the adsorber grains to be angular, such as octahedra, tetrahedra, cubes or cubes, whereby the edges of the adsorber grains can be supported on the pore walls and thus constantly provide ventilation channels between their flat walls and the arched pore surface; According to further developments of the invention, however, it is advantageous to use grain shapes without edges or with few edges, such as ellipsoids or cylinders, since such grains can in principle be introduced more easily into the pores of the foam carrier. According to one embodiment of the invention, it is particularly advantageous that the adsorber grains have approximately the same geometric shape as the pores, but are only dimensioned smaller, so that a ventilation channel is constantly formed in each pore between the surface of the adsorber grain and the wall surface of the pore is, according to a further embodiment of the invention, preference is given to spherical or spherical adsorber grains which not only have the abovementioned advantages of edge-free grains, but are also relatively simple and inexpensive to produce with high accuracy and in a precisely defined grain size, so that the practical use of the filter material according to the invention is advantageous not only for technical reasons but also for financial reasons.
Basically, it is possible to use foam supports with any pore size and to measure the adsorber grains accordingly; According to an embodiment of the invention, however, preference is given to adsorber grains with a diameter of approximately 0.01 to 0.001 mm and pore sizes resulting therefrom, since a particularly good ventilation and filter effect was achieved with such a design.
Diatomaceous earth, for example, which may already be used as the material for the adsorber cores, can be used. may have the required core shape; However, in order to achieve a particularly good filter effect, it is particularly advantageous that the adsorber grains are formed from activated carbon, and it is also advantageous that the adsorber particles present on the pore walls are formed from activated carbon.
With low air velocities and stationary application of the filter material, it is generally to be expected that the adsorber grains once embedded in the pores will also remain in the pores; However, in order to enable the use of the filter material according to the invention also at attachment points which are subject to movement and vibration and at high ventilation speeds, it is proposed according to a further embodiment of the invention that the adsorber grains are attached to the walls of the pores which receive them, so that they are produced during manufacture set distribution of the adsorber grains on the existing pores of the foam carrier remains largely unchanged even in hard use.
Although any mechanically sufficiently suitable and chemically sufficiently resistant foam is fundamentally suitable as a foam carrier for the filter material according to the invention, a further embodiment of the invention consists in the foam carrier being formed from polyurethane foam, since this foam not only brings with it all the necessary mechanical and chemical properties , but can also be produced in pore sizes and pore distributions which have proven to be particularly advantageous for use in the filter material according to the invention; furthermore, the known foam is particularly suitable for attaching the adsorber grains by means of a heat treatment.
In order to avoid that the filter material according to the invention is stretched about excessively in use and at least temporarily changes its pore shape and size, so that even attached adsorber grains for flattening.

zen und zum Verlassen der ihnen zugeordneten Poren gebracht werden, wird gemäss einer weiteren Ausgestaltung der Erfindung vorgeschlagen, dass der Schaumstoffträger mindestens eine Faserschicht aufweist, die etwa aus beim Aufschäumen eingelagerten Fasern bestehen kann, so dass der Schaumstoffträger nicht mehr in dem Masse gedehnt werden kann, dass hierbei eine Änderung seiner Filtereigenschaften auftreten könnte. zen and brought to leave their assigned pores, it is proposed according to a further embodiment of the invention that the foam carrier has at least one fiber layer, which may consist of fibers embedded during foaming, so that the foam carrier can no longer be stretched in the mass that a change in its filter properties could occur.
Such a fiber layer is preferably designed as a flexible grating extending transversely to the main flow direction of a medium to be filtered, which is suitable, because of the intersecting individual fibers, to prevent significant stretching practically in all directions of the grating plane, it being particularly advantageous to use the grating to be designed in such a way that its effective mesh size essentially prevents the passage of the adsorber grains; It is thus possible to additionally fix the adsorber grains even in the case of heavily loaded filter material by embedding grid layers in certain zones of the foam carrier, it being particularly advantageous that the fiber layer is applied to at least one of the surfaces of the foam carrier to ensure that at highly loaded filters cannot, for example, any significant amounts of adsorber particles fall out of the foam carrier and thus can cause a change in the filter characteristics.
If only a single fiber layer is used, it is particularly advantageous that it is applied to the outlet surface for filtered medium in order to prevent adsorber grains from being torn out of the support body by the filtered material flow. This is particularly important in the case of breathing masks, since, in contrast to activated carbon dust, which is harmless per se, the adsorber grains can be a significant nuisance if they enter the eyes or respiratory tract.
It is particularly advantageous to form the fiber layer from a knitted fabric made of polyamide fibers, as is also the case with the filter material mentioned at the outset, since such fibers not only have the required chemical resistance and mechanical strength, but are also particularly suitable which Retain adsorber grains in the foam carrier.
The loose knitted fabric made of polyamide fibers is preferably bonded or welded or glued to the surface of the foam carrier.
Compared to the known material, the filter material according to the invention thus not only has an improved filter * and absorption capacity for liquids, but also, in a completely surprising manner, a significantly improved effect when filtering vapors and gases because of the additional active surfaces that form the adsorber grains.
To produce the filter material according to the invention, it would be possible, for example, to mix the adsorber grains with the components of the foam carrier before it is foamed, although intimate wetting of the adsorber grains must be prevented.
It would also be possible to sprinkle a layer of adsorber grains on the dry foam carrier and then to set this into vigorous vibration, for example by means of a peeling system, so that the adsorber grains can penetrate the foam carrier.
However, in order to obtain the most uniform possible distribution of the adsorber grains in the foam carrier and to prevent local overcrowding, it is proposed according to the invention that the adsorber grains are shot into the water-wet foam carrier with a targeted air flow. Because of the high air permeability of the foam carrier, the air flow for the most part penetrates the foam carrier and in doing so conveys the adsorber grains through the interior of the foam carrier, so that it can be determined whether and to what extent the foam carrier is occupied by adsorber grains by the escape of adsorber grains from the surface of the foam carrier facing away from the air flow is. In order to prevent subsequent influencing of the activated carbon grains, for example by subsequent filling of the pore walls with adsorber particles, a foam carrier is used according to the invention, the pore walls of which are already occupied with adsorber particles, and in particular a polyurethane foam carrier is preferably used, on the pore walls of which activated carbon particles are welded on; The hardness and resilience of the Pois lyurethane foam can be adjusted in such a way that when it is subsequently bombarded with adsorber grains, they can penetrate them to the desired extent. The moisture wetting the foam carrier acts as a lubricant. 20 As mentioned above, the emergence of adsorber grains from the foam carrier bombarded with them allows a conclusion to be drawn as to the extent to which their pores are occupied by adsorber grains. If, however, once a bombardment time associated with a certain foam carrier thickness and air flow velocity has been determined experimentally based on the exit of the grains, then it is no longer necessary to continue to allow the adsorber grains to exit from during the series production of the filter material according to the invention Foam-30 carrier to be used as a process control parameter; it is therefore particularly advantageous, in order to prevent damage to the finished filter material by subsequent coating with fiber fabric, to use a foam backing which is already coated with fiber fabric on its side facing away from the bombarding air 35, preferably with Polyamide fiber knit, which, as mentioned above, is not only particularly suitable for the filter material due to its strength properties, but also prevents the foam carrier from expanding too much during bombardment and thus promotes its even penetration with adsorber grains.
To produce the adsorber grains, it would be possible to use a granular material with a suitable grain shape and size, such as diatoms made of diatomaceous earth, and to fill the 45 porous cavities of these grains with activated carbon particles, if necessary.
According to a further embodiment of the invention, however, it is particularly advantageous to produce the adsorber grains synthetically from activated carbon by introducing droplets of viscose into a Lewis acid and then subjecting them to a carbonization process with constant tumbling. By introducing the droplets into the acid, it penetrates the viscose material; the still wet viscose bodies, which are then introduced 55 into a centrifuge, are subjected to a charring process under constant tumbling, so that ultimately spherical adsorber grains with a specifically optimal surface area are created, which get a hard-porous surface due to the tumbling effect however, have a porous-60 sponge-like structure. The hard surface ensures high strength of the adsorber grains, which ultimately allows these grains to be shot into the foam carrier without the grains being broken by mutual friction with one another, by impact with one another or when they pass through pore openings.
Es wäre grundsätzlich möglich, den beschossenen Schaumstoffträger anschliessend mit einem schwachen Lö In principle, it would be possible to wipe the bombarded foam backing with a weak solder
Soak soak, which results in a softening of the surface of the pore walls in order to bond the adsorber grains attached to the pore walls with the pore walls. However, in order to wash out the adsorber by soaking it with solvent and then rinsing the foam carrier several times. To avoid grains, it is proposed according to the invention that the bombarded foam carrier is exposed to a temperature of 160 to 190 ° C in order to be able to heat-fix the adsorber grains on the lamellae of the foam pores, the preferably spherical adsorber grains being sufficiently firmly connected at the contact points with the foam carrier are, but otherwise have a surface that is not further influenced, so that their effect remains practically unaffected despite their adhesion to the pore walls.
Since the foam carrier, when bombarded with adsorber grains, requires a certain flexibility of the pore openings in order to allow the passage of adsorber grains, it is advantageous according to a further embodiment of the invention that the material of the foam carrier after the above-mentioned temperature treatment at 120 ° for about 6 hours C is crosslinked, on the one hand to achieve the characteristic desired for the finished filter material, but on the other hand to ensure that the adsorber grains are firmly anchored in their associated pores by the lower flexibility of the pore openings.
In order to generate the viscose droplets of the adsorber granules, it would be possible, for example, to apply viscous viscous to a rotating disc, from which drops of different sizes are thrown off, and after the activated carbon granules have been finally tumbled, for example, to classify them according to size in an air classifier. In order to avoid the inevitable high rejects with such a method, it is proposed according to a further embodiment of the method according to the invention for producing uniform viscose droplets that viscose is extruded in an extruder by successive pressure surges, in particular by exposure to high-pressure compressed air, and that the nozzles of the extruder are used for Nibbling the droplets are set in vibration. An extruder such as is used, for example, for the production of artificial silk and at the lower end of which a large number (500 and more) of small nozzles are attached; Viscose liquefied by heating is pressed through successive air pressure surges of highly compressed compressed air into the melting area of the extruder and through the nozzles in small portions, whereby these electrified vibrations of the nozzle batteries seal off these small portions as drops from the nozzle tip and then simply into a below the extruder arranged acid bath can fall. This produces droplets of uniform size, which ultimately lead to a grain size of 0.25 to 0.025 mm.
In order to obtain approximately perfect spherical bodies of synthetic activated carbon from the teardrop-shaped viscose bodies after tumbling, which have a specific surface area of about 1200 m2 / g (N: BET), it is advantageous according to a further embodiment to hold the droplets in the for about 10 minutes Leave Lewis acid until they have absorbed up to 10% of the acid.
According to a further embodiment of the invention, aluminum chloride or barium chloride has proven to be particularly useful as the Lewis acid.
It is basically possible to dry the viscose bodies taken from the Lewis acid first and then

According to a further embodiment of the invention, however, it is advantageous that the viscose bodies removed from the Lewis acid are still tumbled while they are plastically deformable to a certain extent, since in this case it is not only the desired spherical grain shape that arises without this Abrasion occurs to a large extent, but in addition this also results in a densification of the grain surface, which ultimately means that the outer surface of the individual absorber grains is exceptionally hard and abrasion-resistant, while the inner walls and the core of the spherical grains are porous and soft remains and thus has very favorable absorption properties.
According to a further embodiment of the invention, the viscous bodies are heated to 600 to 900 ° C. for the charring while excluding air, and steam is applied to them for 15 to 60 minutes; due to the violent movement and constant mixing of the viscose bodies, this relatively short activation time is sufficient to obtain a complete, uniform charring and activation of the grains.
According to a further embodiment of the invention, instead of water vapor, C02A1C13 or BF3 can also be used, likewise requiring only an exposure time of 15 to 60 minutes, depending on the design of the system.
It should also be pointed out that the more gas or steam is blown through the charring zone during the charring, the purer and free of combustion materials.
In order to achieve a particularly uniform, spherical grain shape, a drum device for producing the adsorber grains is proposed according to the invention, which has a concave-shaped, rotatable, closable centrifuge cylinder, a bottom plate that limits this downward, counter-rotating bottom plate, and a deflection spoon arranged near the inner wall of the centrifuge cylinder preferably made of razor blade steel and supply and discharge connections for carbonization and activation gas or vapor. Viscose bodies introduced into the drum device are rotated by the centrifuge cylinder and guided against the deflection spoon, which forces them to detach themselves from the rotating cylinder wall and throws them onto the counter-rotating base plate. From here they are repeatedly hurled against the cylinder wall and repeatedly thrown back onto the base plate.
In order to achieve a repetition of this process approximately 1500 times per minute, an embodiment of the drum device is proposed in such a way that the base plate and centrifuge cylinder are set up to rotate in opposite directions at approximately 1500 rpm each.
Dichlorodi-ethyl sulfide was dropped onto material samples of the filter material according to the invention and onto material samples of a conventional area filter, each with a surface area of 4 cm 2.
After 6 hours, the amount of this chemical that had broken through the filter material per cm 2 was determined.

The conventional area filter thus claims half of the permissible breakthrough limit, while the material according to the invention, which is equipped with spherical adsorbers made of synthetic activated carbon, only claims a tenth of this.
The subject matter of the invention is explained in more detail with reference to the attached schematic drawings, for example, in which the section through a filter material is shown.
The dimensions shown in the figure are not to scale.
A carrier material 1 made of polyurethane foam is bonded on one surface to a knitted fabric 5 made of polyamide threads, so that a filter material of approximately 2 mm thickness is produced.
Activated carbon particles 2 are attached directly to the pore walls of the foam carrier 1 and clean and detoxify air flowing through the filter material in the direction of arrow s.
A portion of the large pores 3 of the foam carrier 1 is each occupied with an adsorber grain 4, which largely fills the associated large pores 3 and which is attached to the io pore wall.
The mesh size of the knitted fabric coating 5 is dimensioned such that it is smaller than the diameter of an adsorber grain 4, so that adsorber grains 4 are prevented from leaving the foam carrier 1 in the direction of the arrow to i5.
In addition to viscose, polyamide, polyester or polyethylene can also be used as an extrudate for producing the adsorber grains.
