Description
The invention relates to a device for securing trees and large shrubs against strong wind pressure on planting sites without connection to the grown soil, where the available earth volume and / or the possibility of spreading the roots is not sufficient to ensure adequate protection against strong wind pressure.
The importance of the so-called welfare effects of vegetation for the city (gas exchange, increased air humidity, ventilation, etc.) is increasingly recognized. The greening of roof areas of both public (e.g. underground garages) and private facilities is of great importance in two respects for urban planning and human-ecological reasons.
First, they allow the urban green space to be significantly enlarged if the possibilities are used to a certain extent.
Secondly, they enable an optimal distribution of this green space, especially in the most unfavorable, densely built-up parts of the city, in which any other expansion or new installation of green spaces is usually countered by insurmountable economic and / or municipal problems.
The sensible coordination of urban renewal (old house renovation, possibly suitable addition of old houses) and the creation of roof gardens are ideal; it means not only a significant reduction in investment costs, but also a significant increase in the living value of the new apartments and is therefore also of interest to private property developers.
Plant life on a roof is, however, subject to a variety of disruptive factors due to its exposed location and the static layer (resilience of the roof construction - increase in construction costs), which is usually not very powerful. It is much less protected against the direct attacks of sun, wind and rain and suffers from the consequences of drought, poor nutrients, soil compaction, accumulating moisture, frost, loosening of roots and strong wind pressure much more than in comparison with grown soil.
By adding light, plant-compatible plastics (Styromull, Hygromull, Superlite, etc.) to the potting soil (up to 50% by volume), the weight of the soil structure can be significantly reduced compared to conventional soil structures with normal garden soil, so that a correspondingly higher soil layer remains the same Load can be applied, these plastics also meet the demand for better water and nutrient storage capacity, soil ventilation and loosening. However, due to the low weight of the soil, these advantages are offset by the disadvantage of reduced root anchoring and thus less stability of woody plants. This “effect-cost-scissors” of the soil application (the higher the available soil layer, the better growth with the less maintenance and sensitivity of the trees to extreme weather conditions on the one hand, but the higher the load, the load on the load-bearing structure and thus the construction costs) Up until now, tall shrubs and trees were mostly not used or only used at low-exposed locations due to the insufficient thickness of the soil layer and the high risk of strong wind pressure (risk of wind throw).
But trees and large shrubs (high green) make up the main part of the air-conditioning and air-purifying effects of city green.
The following devices for securing trees and large shrubs against strong wind pressure were previously used:
There are above-ground fastenings, such as bracing the trunk with eyebolts or steel straps and rope anchors on structures (parapet walls, etc.). However, it is disadvantageous that long-term attachments to the trunk entail the risk of tissue crushing (if the trunk is enclosed) or increase the risk of breakage (if the trunk breaks through). The free tension ropes also interfere with use and visually in the garden room.
When anchored in the roof near the trunk, the requirement for absolute moisture tightness creates difficult and costly sealing problems on the roof skin.
It is also known to be tied to tree posts made of weather-resistant material, the post being inserted into a sleeve which is anchored in a reinforced concrete slab at drainage level. With large trees, these anchor plates must be dimensioned accordingly and thus bring considerable additional loads on the roof and thus a considerable increase in construction costs.
An additional strengthening of the root ball «(root plate») by superficially applied loads (boulders, slabs, etc.) is also used. This superficial stress on the root plate also brings - should it be effective - considerable additional stress on the roof. In terms of plant physiology, such pressure points on the uppermost fine root layer are very unfavorable.
Die Verspannungen des Wurzelballens sind nur dann wirkungsvoll, wenn sie fest im Dach ver5 Furthermore, tensioning of the root ball by steel or plastic strips, laying long wooden beams in a triangle over the tree ball (and covering with earth material) is often proposed. The tension in the root ball is only effective if it is tight in the roof

Die ferner genannten Balken sind bei starkem Winddruck fast wirkungslos. are anchored; then difficult sealing problems arise again on the roof skin (moisture insulation). In addition, pressure and friction (when the wind is moving) can gradually lead to considerable root deformation. The bars also mentioned are almost ineffective in strong wind pressure.
Finally, the use of a close-meshed anchoring net made of non-rotting, less elastic plastics is recommended. (The net is built into the soil layer - for example in the lower third - this tissue should be grown through by the fine roots and thus extend the anchorage to a larger area of the soil.) Such anchorage nets are relatively inexpensive from a plant physiological point of view, but only really effective if large ones Areas are covered with it and then planted. This creates a certain distribution of wind pressure. However, the necessary anchoring of the network in the earth well again creates sealing problems. In addition, additional stress on the root plate is usually necessary.
All of these measures affect the development of the tree, increase the load or are not very effective.
The device according to the invention, which overcomes these disadvantages, is characterized in that a shape-retaining basket made of corrosion-resistant and rot-free struts is provided, the footprint of which is at least as large as the upper opening of the basket. The standing surface of this basket is advantageously either of full surface construction or lattice-shaped and then covered by a rot-proof cover (preferably a filter fleece which is used anyway in roof garden structures). The basket can be bell-shaped, truncated pyramid, truncated cone or cuboid.
It is particularly expedient if the tree basket consists of several, preferably prefabricated, elements which are only connected to one another on the spot. This results in a particularly simple manufacturing possibility for the basket.
To form a fixed wind anchoring system on larger areas, several baskets can be connected to each other in a stable manner at the location.
Es zeigen: The invention is illustrated for example in the accompanying drawings. Show it:

In the drawing, 1 denotes the upper opening of a basket.
The young tree is planted through the upper opening (neck opening) 1 into the basket, which consists of circular (or polygonal) horizontal struts 2, the stably connected, bell-shaped, or straight jacket struts 5 and a grid-like structure made of concentric circles
7 or polygons and radial straight lines 6 constructed base 4. All of these elements are stably connected to each other so that a form-retaining spatial structure is created.
In the case shown, the material that can be used is primarily corrosion-resistant steel or aluminum, hard plastics or reinforced concrete.
The stand area 4 can be covered on the inside with a cover 3 (plastic fleece).
FIG. 7 shows the manner in which a truncated pyramid-shaped basket 8 of stabilizing coarse root system 12 and the fine root system 13 serving the purpose of soil unlocking and supply is already relatively well-grown. The dimension of the basket has to be based on the size of the crown 14 of the adult tree. The basket 8 stands with its base 4 in the drainage layer 10 on the roof structure 11 (including roof skin and protective screed). It is filled and surrounded with soil material 9. Corresponding shrubs 16 or herbaceous plants 17 (meadow, ground cover, shade perennials) are also readily developable in the immediate vicinity of the trunk 15.
A pyramid-shaped basket 8 is also shown in FIG. 8, for example. In the crown space 14, the wind pressure 19 results from the wind speed and the main attack surface (area normal to the main wind direction within the largest crown circumference) 18. The wind pressure causes a torque which, without a basket, would have its axis of rotation in the area of the no longer elastically flexible main roots in relative proximity to the trunk. With a well-rooted basket, the axis of rotation 20 is located much further away from the contact surface 18 at the end of the standing surface 4 opposite the main wind direction. The inner covering 3 of the standing surface or a full-surface design of the standing surface also acts on all of the floor material 9 located above the standing surface in addition to the weight of the tree as a restoring moment. The basket consists of permanently rotting and corrosion-resistant, stiff (as a finished basket containing shape) material - preferably steel (plastic-coated, etc.), plastics, aluminum or reinforced concrete. It is placed on or in the drainage layer.
The young tree is planted in the basket through the upper opening 1 (neck opening) and gradually roots through it from top to bottom (FIG. 7).
The standing area 4 of the basket is either fully formed (preferably in the case of plastic versions) or the latticework forming the stable standing area is provided with a light, rot-proof cover (preferably a water-permeable plastic fleece or similar), as is the case with the construction of the floor layers for roof gardens as a filter Drainage layer and growth substrate is used extensively. The particular importance of the resulting firm (i.e., impenetrable for solid materials) standing surface of the basket is that with every strong wind movement of the tree through the rooting tree, the basket cannot push through the loose growth substrate, but the whole, within the basket volume or floor space located above the stand area must be moved. This volume of earth acts statically entirely as a counter-moment to the moment caused by the wind pressure in the crown space (cf. FIG. 8) without the roof being additionally burdened thereby. An additional weighting, for example of the root plate with the disadvantages described at the beginning, is therefore unnecessary.
In the normal case, the upper opening 1 will advantageously be smaller than the standing area 4; in this case the free layer of earth over the inclined surface of the basket also acts as an additional load, its stabilizing effect

durch den hohen Reibungswiderstand der Mantelfläche (bestehend aus Gitterwerk und Erdsubstanz) noch verstärkt wird. is reinforced by the high frictional resistance of the outer surface (consisting of latticework and earth substance).
Finally, the invention offers advantages in securing the newly planted tree for the first 1-3 vegetation periods (depending on the location, type and age of the wood).
The usual tying on one or more tree poles in the grown soil is not effective on the roof due to the fact that the depth of the soil is usually too low and the soil material is looser to secure it in the ground. When using the invention, the attachment is e.g. simply by multi-sided rope tensioning of the trunk
(with bandages) and the ropes can be attached to the upper opening of the basket or stable struts can already be fitted to the upper opening of the basket; finally, versions with already fixed mountings for tree posts are possible.
In all cases, the device according to the invention for securing trees and large shrubs against strong wind pressure offers, in addition to the constructional and / or static advantages described compared to conventional methods, also the best prerequisites for undisturbed root development and thus a successful overall development of the woody plant.
