House, Modern
Synthetic Reactions , 2' édition, W. A. Benjamin, Inc. (1972)].
Chem. Soc. , 93, 7016 (1971).
Bergamota-2.1 2-diêne-1 4-ai (la)
I. Le trans-z-bergamoténe, utilisé comme produit de départ, a montré un degré de pureté d'environ 93%; [α]D20 = - 31";
RMN: 0,81 (3H, s); 1,66 (s, 12H); 5,18 (2H, 2m), 3 ppm;
SM: M+=204 (2).

CLAIM
Use as a perfuming ingredient for the preparation of perfumes and perfumed products, of a compound of formula
EMI1.1
having a double bond in position 12, respectively 11, as indicated by the dotted lines and in which the symbol Z represents a group = C-CHO, respectively
EMI1.2
The subject of the invention is the use, as perfuming ingredients for the preparation of perfumes and perfumed products, of new sesquiterpenoids of formula
EMI1.3
having a double bond in position 12, respectively 11, as indicated by the dotted lines and in which the symbol Z represents a group = C - CHO, respectively
EMI1.4
During a study on the regio-selective introduction of oxygen functions in the trans-x-bergamotene molecule, it appeared that some,
among the compounds thus obtained, exhibited very interesting olfactory characteristics. In particular, we have found that the aldehyde of formula
EMI1.5
or 5- (2,6-dimethylbicyclo- [3. 1.1 .1] -hept-2-ene-6-yl) -2-methylpent- 2-ene-1-al, hereinafter defined as bergamota-2, 12-diene-lSal, and the alcohol of formula
EMI1.6
or 5- (2,6-dimethylbicyclo- [3.1.1] -hept-2-ene-6-yl) -2-methyl-pent-3-ene-2-ol, hereinafter defined as bergamota-2, 11 -diéne-13-ol, presented various odorous notes of woody type, in particular a character of sandalwood, as well as a secondary character cuminic and an animal note, even of perspiration.
In particular alcohol (Ib) has a tenacious and elegant, woody fragrant note, reminiscent of that developed by vetver or cedar. Such odorous properties allow a wide use of the mentioned compounds, either in fancy perfume compositions, or in reconstitutions of natural essences, the essential oil of costus for example.
The proportions in which the compounds of formula (I) can be used to promote the desired perfuming effects can vary within a fairly wide range. Thus, they can be between approximately 1 and 20%, preferably between 5 and 10%, by weight relative to the total weight of the composition in which they are incorporated.
Of course, such values are not absolute and depend in particular on the nature of the co-ingredients in a given composition as well as on the nature of the product to which they are added.
When the compounds of formula (I) are used as perfuming ingredients for the preparation of perfumed articles, such as soaps, shampoos, detergents or cosmetic products in general, their concentrations in the finished products can be l '' from 0.1 to 0.5% by weight for example.
The compounds of formula (I) can be prepared by oxidation of trans-o! -Bergamotene in accordance with the methods illustrated by the reaction scheme which follows:
EMI1.7
Thus, by treatment of trans-x-bergamotene with singlet oxygen for example, according to the usual process followed during sensitized photooxygenation [see for this purpose: Accounts of Chem.
Research, 1,104 (1968)], followed by reduction of the resulting reaction mixture, the alcohol of formula (Ib) was obtained. Said alcohol is formed by absorption of one equivalent of oxygen per equivalent of starting bergamotene and it is accompanied by the isomeric carbinol of formula
EMI1.8
When photooxygenation is carried out in a prolonged manner by promoting the absorption of quantities greater than 1 equivalent of oxygen, it has been observed, in addition to the formation of the compounds described above, the presence of diols of formula
EMI2.1
By carrying out, on the other hand, the oxidation of bargamotene by means of SeO2, preferably in an organic solvent, optionally aqueous, such as for example an alcohol such as Methanol, the unsaturated aldehyde of formula (Ia) is obtained [see HO House, Modern
Synthetic Reactions, 2nd edition, W. A. Benjamin, Inc. (1972)].
The preparation of said compounds as well as their analytical characteristics are indicated by the detail below (temperatures in degrees centigrade).
Trans- α -bergamotene, used as a starting product for the preparation of said compounds, can be obtained by fractional distillation of a fraction rich in sesquiterpene derivatives of bergamot essence, said fraction having been obtained by extraction of natural essence. Bergamotene can also be obtained by the method described in J. Am. Chem. Soc. , 93, 7016 (1971).
Bergamota-2.1 2-diene-1 4-ai (la)
I. Trans-z-bergamotene, used as a starting product, has shown a degree of purity of approximately 93%; [α] D20 = - 31 ";
NMR: 0.81 (3H, s); 1.66 (s, 12H); 5.18 (2H, 2m), 3 ppm;
MS: M + = 204 (2).
61.2 g of bergamotene were mixed with 35 g of SeO2 and the whole was dissolved in 400 ml of ethanol and brought to reflux. The course of the reaction was followed using analysis by gas chromatography, which indicated a preponderant conversion of starting bergamotene in about 51/2 h.
After cooling, the reaction mixture was filtered through diatomaceous earth and the clear filtrate was evaporated to provide a residue which, by vacuum distillation (0.01 torr), provided 17 g of the desired aldehyde . Subsequent steep purification of a fractional distillation made it possible to obtain an analytical sample presenting: eb. 70-75 / 0.01 torr; [α] D20 = -36; nD = 1.5099; d420 = 0.9596.
II. A solution of trans-a-bergamotene, containing about 35% by weight of caryophyllene (10.2 g), SeO2 (0.555 g; 5 mM) and terbutylhydroperoxide (75%; 9.0 g; 75 mM) in 50 ml of methylene chloride was heated at reflux for 30 h. The volatile parts were evaporated at 600/10 torr and the residue obtained (14 g) was chromatographed through a column filled with silica gel (100 g). 0.9 g of bergamota-2,12-dien-14-al was thus obtained by elution using petroleum ether / 98: 2 ether. An analytical sample was prepared by purification using preparative gas chromatography (column: Carbowax, 200).
The relative rotation power of the said sample was - 46.7 and its analytical characteristics are shown by the following IR and NMR spectra:
IR: 2705, 1688, 1640 and 820 cm-1;
NMR: 0.87 (3H, s); 1.64 (3H, d, J¯2Hz); 1.70 (3H, d, 12Hz); 5.18 (1H, m); 6.42 (1H, t, J¯7Hz); 9.31 (3H, s), Gppm;
MS: M + = 218 (1); m / e: 204 (1), 161 (3), 145 (4), 119 (55), 107 (22), 93 (100), 79 (28), 69 (26), 57 (45), 41 (55).
Bergamota-2,11-diene-13-ol (Ib)
A solution of 20.4 g (0.1 M; purity = 93%) of trans-a-bergamotene in 200 ml of ethanol and 25 ml of isopropanol (maintained at 15-18) was subjected to sensitized photooxygenation , in the presence of Rose Bengal, using a Philips HPK lamp at 125 W.
The oxygen flow rate was set to about 40 ml / min. After about 3 hours,
The oxygen uptake was about 2.241, equivalent to 0.1 M, and the irradiation was stopped.
3.5 g of sodium borhydride were then added in small portions to the cooled reaction mixture, then the whole was kept under vigorous stirring overnight and diluted with water.
By extraction with ether, evaporation of the volatile parts and distillation under vacuum (0.01 torr) in a bubble apparatus, 16.2 g of an oily mixture were obtained containing approximately 50% of bergamota2,11-diene- 13-ol, as well as 42% of a carbinol of formula
EMI2.2
Subsequent purification of the mixture obtained was carried out by preparative gas chromatography using a stiff column
1.5 m carbowax at a temperature of 175.
Bergamota-2,11-diene-13-ol nD = 1.4982; d24 = 0.9542; [α] D20 = -42.7;
IR: 3410, 1660, 970 and 785 cm-1;
NMR: 0.81 (3H, s); 1.28 (6H, 2s); 1.68 (3H); 5.18 (1H, m); 5.57 (2H, m), 6 ppm;
