Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to an improved process for the preparation of y, ó -unsaturated carbonyl compounds by means of the known reaction of a tertiary allyl alcohol with an acetal or ketal of an aliphatic aldehyde or ketone in the presence of an acidic catalyst.
So far, a strong acid, for example a mineral acid, ._ a strong organic acid or a strong acidic salt has been used as acid catalysts in this known reaction, see e.g. U.S. Patent 3,453,317. The disadvantage of this known method was the relatively low yield. For example, the yield was. Reaction of the tertiary allyl alcohol 3-methyl-1-buten-3-ol with the ketal acetone dimethyl ketal in the presence of 30 phosphoric acid only 54% of the y, ò-unsaturated ketone & methyl-5-hepten-2-one (see Example 3 the above-mentioned patent).
The present invention now relates to a process for the preparation of y, ó -unsaturated carbonyl compounds of the formula 35

Gemäss diesem Verfahren können Ausbeuten von 80% oder mehr an y,ó-ungesättigter Carbonylverbindung erhalten werden, wobei der tertiäre Allylalkohol der Formel II jeweils praktisch vollständig umgesetzt wird. in the presence of a strong acid, using 3-100 moles of ketal or acetal per mole of tertiary allyl alcohol. According to this process, yields of 80% or more of y, ó-unsaturated carbonyl compound can be obtained, the tertiary allyl alcohol of the formula II in each case being virtually completely implemented.
The hydrocarbon radical R1 of the formula I can be straight-chain, branched or cyclic. Preferred hydrocarbon radicals are saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbon radicals such as lower alkyl and lower alkenyl, for example methyl ethyl, propyl, isopropyl, butyl, isobutyl, 3,4-dimethylpentyl, vinyl, allyl, 3,4-dimethylpenten-3-yl, higher alkyl and higher alkenyl radicals, for example the radicals of the formula

Besonders bevorzugte Kohlenwasserstoffreste sind gesättigte und verzweigte niedere Alkylgruppen mit 1—7 Kohlenwasserstoffatomen, insbesondere Methyl. n where n is an integer from 1-8 and the dashed lines represent an optional additional bond, 4,7,8-trimethyl-nonyl, 4,7,8-trimethyl-nonadien-3,7-yl etc., or lower or higher alkyl and alkenyl groups than those mentioned above. Particularly preferred hydrocarbon radicals are saturated and branched lower alkyl groups with 1-7 hydrocarbon atoms, especially methyl.
The formula I also includes compounds in which R1 represents an aralkyl radical, preferably a phenyl-lower alkyl radical, or an aryl radical, preferably a phenyl radical. Also suitable as unsaturated carbonyl compounds are compounds in which R1 represents a lower or higher alkyl or alkenyl group or an aralkyl group of the type mentioned above. But where there is also an oxygen-containing substituent attached to an aliphatic hydrocarbon atom, namely a free, esterified or etherified hydroxy group. Esterified hydroxyl groups are taken to mean acyloxy groups in which acyl = never-the-alkanoyl, that is to say residues of formic acid, acetic acid, propionic acid, butyric acid etc. or else benzoic acid. The etherified hydroxy groups are lower alkoxy groups, e.g. Methoxy, propoxy, isopropoxy, etc. or phenyloxy in question.
Examples of the oxygen-containing R 'radicals are hydroxymethyl, acetoxyethyl, methoxypropyl, 4-hydroxy (or methoxy or acetoxy) -4-methylpentyl, 8-hydroxy (or methoxy or acetoxy) -4,8-dimethyl-nonyl, 8 -Hydroxy (or methoxy or acetoxy) -4,8-dimethyl-nonen-3-yl, 4-hydroxy (or methoxy or acetoxy) -3,4-dimethyl-pentyl, etc. called. If R1 is an oxygen-containing substituent, it consists of the elements carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. Otherwise, this residue consists only of the elements carbon and hydrogen. 5 The general formula I for the; ', ö-unsaturated girbonyl compounds also includes compounds in which R2, R \ R4 and R5 are straight-chain, branched or cyclic Neither-der-aliphatic hydrocarbon radicals. Preferred such low aliphatic hydrocarbon radicals R2, R3, R4 io and R5 are lower alkyl and lower alkenyl radicals having 1-8 carbon atoms, for example methyl, ethyl, propyl, isopropyl, allyl, butyl, pentenyl etc. A particularly preferred lower aliphatic hydrocarbon residue is the methyl residue. R3 on the other hand is preferably hydrogen. 15 As stated above, R1 can be closed with R2 or R4 with R5 to form a ring. Such rings are carbocyclic 5- or o-membered rings containing the elements carbon and hydrogen. For example, R1 together with R2 can represent the tetramethylene or pentame-20 ethylene group and R4 together with Rs can represent a trimethylene or tetramethylene group. R5 in formula III represents a straight-chain or branched alkyl radical having 1-20 carbon atoms. It is preferably alkyl radicals having 1-8 carbon atoms, very particularly preferably methyl or ethyl.

Any conventional strong acid with a pK value - ie the negative logarithm of the dissociation constant - between approximately 0.4 and approximately 3 can be used in the present method. It is preferred to use acids with a pK value of approximately 2. Examples of strong acids are: mineral acids such as phosphoric acid, sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, strong organic acids such as oxalic acid, trichloroacetic acid, trifluoroacetic acid, sulfonic acids such as toluenesulfonic acid, especially p-toluenesulfonic acid, 55 alkyl sulfonic acids, especially methyl sulfonic acid and nitrophphenyl sulfonic acids. However, strongly acidic salts such as potassium bisulfite, boron trichloride, zinc chloride and iron chloride can also be used. The preferred strong acid is phosphoric acid.
Preferred pressures are those of 10-50 atmospheres, more preferred temperature

bereich ist derjenige zwischen ungefähr 120 und 180° C, ganz besonders derjenige um ungefähr 150° C. the range is between about 120 and 180 ° C, especially the one around 150 ° C.
If desired, the reaction can be carried out in the presence of a solvent. Any conventional organic solvent can be used as the solvent. Preferred solvents are aromatic and aliphatic hydrocarbons such as hexane, cyclohexane, isooctane, benzene, toluene, petroleum ether, ligroin.
The amount of acid catalyst is not critical; The amount thereof is expediently from about 0.1% by weight to about 10% by weight of the reaction mixture. Amounts of approximately 1% of the reaction mixture are particularly preferred.
The ratio of ketal or acetal III to the tertiary allyl alcohol II in the reaction mixture is preferably about 50: 1 to about 20: 1, particularly preferably the ratio of about 30: 1. Maintaining a substantial excess of ketal or acetal III in the reaction mixture promotes the formation of an azeotrope consisting essentially of the ketal or acetal III and an alcohol which is a by-product of the reaction between compound III and compound II and which has the formula
R6-OH " IV R6-OH "IV

aufweist. The azeotrope thus formed can be easily removed from the reaction mixture by any conventional distillation method as the formation of the y, ó-unsaturated carbonyl compound of Formula I progresses.
If the process is carried out batchwise, about 10 to about 50 moles, in particular about 40 moles, of compound III are preferably present in the reaction mixture at the start of the reaction per mole of compound II. Thereupon, in a preferred variant of this process, additional amounts of the compounds II and III are added to the mixture, to the extent that the reaction proceeds.
When the reactants are further added, care is preferably taken to ensure that the acetal or ketal III is present in excess (ie more than is reacted with the compound II, which is also added further); these increments of compound III and compound II are not critical, but the amount of compound III is preferably selected so that the alcohol IV formed can be continuously distilled off as an azeotrope. Accordingly, the amount of compound III added to the amount of compound II added is preferably 2: 1-1: 1, a ratio of approximately 1.5: 1 being very particularly preferred.
The discontinuous process described above can also be carried out continuously; conventional distillation techniques can be used.
In carrying out the process, the reaction mixture contains at least about 0.01 to about 0.5% by weight, preferably about 0.2% by weight, of a strong acid. If desired, the further addition of compound III or II can also be accompanied by a further addition of acid. However, this further addition of acid is preferably omitted and the amount of the reaction mixture is kept approximately constant.
. According to the process of the present invention, yields of \ ô-unsaturated carbonyl compound I are approximately 80%, with reaction times of approximately 15 hours. According to the present process, it is also possible to completely implement the tertiary allyl alcohol of the formula II, without unduly prolonging the reaction time or excessive amounts of compound III. The y, ò-unsaturated carbonyl compound can be isolated in a known manner in pure form from the mixture of the reaction products. A fractional distillation, carried out one or more times, can expediently be used for this, depending on how pure the reaction product is desired. .
12.5 g of 3-methyl-1-buten-3-ol, 300 g of acetone dimethyl ketal (2,2-di-methoxy-propane) and 6.9 ml of a catalyst system consisting of 8 g 85% phosphoric acid and 100 ml glacial acetic acid are given. The total weight of the reaction mixture is brought to 600 g using 280 g acetone dimethyl ketal. After the sealing cylinder, it is placed in a stirred, heated (150 °) oil bath and left there for 1 hour, then the pressure vessel is cooled in an ice bath and the reaction mixture is placed in a 1 liter round bottom flask without rinsing. The mixture is subjected to distillation using a 28 cm Goodloe column, maintaining atmospheric pressure until the temperature at the top of the column reaches 64 ° C. Most of the acetone dimethyl ketal-methanol azeotrope distills off at about 58 ° C. The distillate weighs around 30 g and consists essentially of acetone dimethyl ketal, methanol, acetone, isopropenyl methyl ether and traces of isoprene. The distillation is now interrupted. 12.5 g of 3-methyl-1-butene-3-ol are added to the cooled solution remaining in the flask and the weight is again brought to about 600 g by adding 20-30 g of fresh acetone dimethyl ketal. The light yellow reaction mixture is again placed in a pressure vessel, which is heated to 150 ° C. for 1 hour. The distillation (64 ° C), the addition of 12.5 g of fresh 3-methyl-1-buten-3-ol and the 20-30 g of fresh acetone dimethyl ketal, the heating in a pressure vessel to 150 ° C for periods of 1 Hour is repeated ten times, after which • a total of 150 g of 3-methyl-1-buten-3-ol have been consumed. After the last addition of 3-methyl-l-buten-3-ol, the hourly heating periods are repeated four times, the amount of the distillate being replaced by acetone dimethyl ketal in each case.
After 16 hours of heating, the implementation is practically complete. The 6-methyl-5-hepten-2-one is isolated by distillation of the reaction mixture, first at atmospheric pressure using a Goodloe column (Tdcst. 38-74 °), then by vacuum distillation of the residue over a 10 cm Vigreux column. Vacuum distillation gives a 118.3 g forerun (22-55 ° / 12 mm Hg) containing methylheptenone, a main fraction of 157.0 g (56-62 ° / 12 mm) consisting essentially of methylheptenone , and a residue of 7.5 g. The forerun is redistilled at atmospheric pressure to give 14.6 g of methyl pentenone with a boiling point of 160-164 ° C. From 150 g of 3-methyl-1-buten-3-ol an amount of 171.6 g (78%) /? - methylheptenone is accordingly obtained in a purity of 97%.
