Abstract

The machine comprises a rotating crank having a drive pulley (87) which, through a connecting rod (90), moves a needle (22), a movable yarn guide (18, 20) to lead the yarn to the needle, a shaft (62, 80) also provided with a drive pulley (76, 82) and designed to impart a substantially circular motion to the yarn guide, and a drive unit (M) which also transmits the motion from the drive unit to the pulleys to impart a reciprocating motion to the needle, thus ensuring exact synchronisation of the needle with the movement of the yarn guide. The method comprises the stage of transferring the yarn (14, 16) or roving from a supply source (28), through a fixed yarn guide (48) and the moving yarn guide (18, 20) which is provided with a reciprocating and circularly oscillating motion, to the needle (22), winding the yarn or roving around and through the needle to form a chain of knitted stitches. Starting with a roving or card sliver of fibre tufts, the fibres having a predetermined mean length, a knitted cord is obtained directly from the roving. <IMAGE>
