Abstract

At least the portion of the surface of the article which is subject to wear is covered with a coating comprising at least three superposed layers. The layer in contact with the surface to be covered is a layer of Ti, Zr or Hf carbide and the outer layer is a layer of Zr, Al or Hf oxide. As for the intermediate layer, this consists of a layer of nitride or oxycarbide. The articles which are treated are intended, for example, for machining steel.
