Abstract
The crosslinking and the expansion of the polyethylene resin take place in the actual body of an extruder, before the extrusion; the mixture to be extruded comprising the resin, a blowing agent and an organic peroxide is first of all melted in the extruder and then diluted with the solvent before the crosslinking heat treatment is performed, the duration of which is at least equal to one half of the half-life and preferably of one to two half-lives of the peroxide employed, at the temperature chosen for the crosslinking. This process applies preferably to the manufacture of lightly crosslinked polyethylene foams of low density.
