The invention relates to a process for the preparation of new derivatives of hydroxybenzylmalonic acids and their use as stabilizers for synthetic polymers.
These are the compounds of the formula (1),
EMI1.1
wonn
X is oxygen,
Y is hydrogen, the radical, an alkyl group with 1-12 C atoms, an alkenyl group with 3 or 4 C atoms, the propargyl group, the benzyl group or a group of the formula
EMI1.2
represents in which R6 is hydrogen, methyl or phenyl and R7 is hydrogen or an acyl group with up to 18 carbon atoms,
R1 represents a hydroxybenzyl group of the formula (II) in which
EMI1.3
R3 and R4, independently of one another, each denote an alkyl group with 1-8 C atoms and R5 denote hydrogen or methyl, and
R2 represents hydrogen or a hydroxybenzyl group of the formula (II).
Y in the meaning of an alkyl group can be a primary alkyl group such as e.g. B. the methyl, ethyl, n-propyl, n-butyl, n-hexyl, n-octyl, n-decyl or n-dodecyl group.
R3 and R4 can assume the same meaning as given for Y, but they can also mean a secondary or tertiary alkyl group such as. B. the isopropyl, sec. Butyl, tert-butyl or tert-octyl group.
Y meaning an alkenyl group can e.g. B. be the allyl or methallyl group.
R7 as an acyl group can be an aliphatic acyl group, for example the acetyl, propionyl, hexanoyl, acrylic, methacrylic, 2-ethylhexanoyl, dodecanoyl or octadecanoyl group, or an aromatic acyl group, especially the benzoyl group.
These compounds give synthetic polymers excellent protection against both thermal-oxidative and light-induced aging. It is known that organic polymers are slowly broken down by both light and oxygen, which leads to a gradual decrease in the utility properties. This aging is accelerated by heat, but on the other hand it can be greatly delayed by adding stabilizers. It is known that hydroxybenzylmalonic acid derivatives can be used as antioxidative stabilizers for polymers, but such compounds do not have a sunscreen effect. On the other hand, derivatives of 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine have already become known as light stabilizers, which alone have no noticeable antioxidant effect.
The new compounds of formula I mentioned represent a molecular combination of these two structures. Compared to a mixture of an antioxidant from the hydroxybenzylmalonic acid series and a light stabilizer from the tetramethylpiperidine series, the new compounds have the advantage of being easier to incorporate and the consistently constant ratio of antioxidant to light stabilizer. Surprisingly, however, an additional advantage was found: these new compounds have a higher stabilizing activity than the same amount of a mixture of a hydroxybenzylmalonic acid derivative and a tetramethylpiperidine derivative. In practice, this means that the same effect can be achieved with a smaller amount of stabilizer.
Two classes of compounds of formula (I) are preferred. One class is the para-hydroxybenzyl compounds, as they correspond to the formula (I) when R1 is a group of the formula (IIa)
EMI1.4

Particularly preferred among these are those compounds in which R3 is the tert-butyl group, R4 is the methyl or tert-butyl group, R5 is hydrogen and Y is hydrogen, the radical -O or the methyl group.
The other class of preferred substances are the meta-hydroxybenzyl compounds. They correspond to the formula (I) if R1 is a group of the formula (IIb)

EMI2.1
Here, Rg represents an alkyl radical with 1-4 carbon atoms.
The reaction can be accelerated by using alkaline catalysts. Suitable basic catalysts are, for example, alkali hydroxides such as NaOH or KOH, alkali or alkaline earth alcoholates such as CH3ONA, C2H5ONa, (CH3) 3COK, (C2H5O) 2Mg or (CH3) 2CHOLi, alkali or alkaline earth metal hydrides such as LiH, NaH, or CaH2 and alkali amides such as NaNH2, LiNH2 or KNH2. The reaction can be carried out in solution, which ensures better temperature control and which is particularly recommended in the case of high-melting starting components.
Suitable solvents are, for example, alcohols such as methanol, ethanol, isopropanol or tert-butanol, aliphatic ethers or cyclic ethers such as diethyl ether, tetrahydrofuran or dioxane, and also hydrocarbons such as hexane, heptane, ligroin, decalin, cyclohexane, benzene, toluene or are suitable Xylene and polar aprotic solvents such as dimethylformamide, dimethylacetamide or dimethyl sulfoxide. The reaction is usually carried out at an elevated temperature in order to ensure that it proceeds quickly and completely. The products can be isolated by the customary methods, for example by evaporation and crystallization of the residue.
The base is expediently neutralized before the solvent is distilled off.
