The invention relates to a process for the preparation of higher (meth) acrylic acid esters.
Higher acrylic acid esters can be produced by transesterification. This process has the disadvantage that polymeric products are formed during the transesterification.
The object of the invention is a process which precludes polymer formation during the reaction.
The invention thus relates to a process for the preparation of higher (meth) acrylic acid esters of the general formula I
EMI1.1
where R1 is a substituted or unsubstituted hydrocarbon radical, R2 is H or CH3 and n is 1, 2, 3 or 4, characterized in that a Diels-Alder adduct obtained from cyclopentadiene and (meth) acrylic acid or an ester of one of the acids is used with an alcohol of the general formula II
EMI1.2
where n and Rl are as defined above, to form a (5-methyl) -2-norbornene-5-carboxylic acid ester of the general formula III
EMI1.3
in which R1, R2 and n have the above meaning,
and the compound of the general formula III is then pyrolyzed at temperatures between 200 and 500 ° C. and at a pressure of 1 to 20 mbar to give cyclopentadiene and a higher methacrylic ester.
In a manner known per se, the (5-methyl) -2norbornene-5-carboxylic acid esters are prepared from cyclopentadiene with (meth) acrylic acid or an ester of one of these acids by a Diels-Alder reaction. The methyl ester, ethyl ester, propyl ester or butyl ester can be used as esters of (meth) acrylic acid.
The Diels-Alder reaction can be carried out in a manner known per se and proceeds easily in high yields.
The further reaction according to the invention of the (5-methyl) 2-norbornene-5-carboxylic acid esters takes place with an alcohol of the general formula II, where R1 is a branched or unbranched aliphatic radical having 3 to 8 carbon atoms and n is the valency of alcohol 1 to 4 means.
Monohydric alcohols with one methylol group, dihydric alcohols with two methylol groups, trihydric alcohols with three methylol groups and tetravalent alcohols with four methylol groups, the methylol groups having to be terminally attached to the same carbon atom, can be used. Examples of monohydric alcohols are 2-ethyl-1-hexanol, for dihydric alcohols 2,2-dimethyl-1,3 propanediol, for trihydric alcohols trimethylolpropane and for tetravalent alcohols pentaerythritol.
The transesterification in the process according to the invention is carried out in the presence of a suitable catalyst. For example, butyl titanate or lithium hydroxide are used as the catalyst. The transesterification takes place almost quantitatively, and the split off alcohol is continuously removed from the reaction mixture by distillation.
The compounds obtained according to the general formula III are then subjected to pyrolysis.
The cyclopentadiene is split off and can be recovered in almost quantitative quantities and used again for the Diels Alder reaction. The higher acrylic acid esters can be isolated in good yield from the pyrolysis product.
The pyrolysis takes place in the vapor phase at temperatures between 200 and 500 ° C., preferably 350 and 450 ° C. The compound of the general formula III is expediently evaporated under vacuum, as quickly as possible, expediently subjected to pyrolysis in a vertical, heated tube. The pyrolysis furnace can be at least partially filled with Raschig rings. After the pyrolysis process, the reaction products are cooled immediately, expediently to temperatures below 25 ° C., the higher (meth) acrylic acid esters condensing and being able to be recovered directly.
Polymerization inhibitors are expediently added in amounts of from 0.005 to 0.5% to the norbornene compound to be pyrolyzed.
