Devices for measuring an electric current are already known, comprising a transformer with a primary winding for the current to be measured and a secondary winding, at least one element sensitive to the magnetic field of the magnetic circuit of the transformer and delivering a signal representative of said field. an amplifier controlled by this signal supplying the secondary winding in the direction tending to cancel the magnetic field which gives rise to said signal, a current measuring device being connected in series with this secondary winding.
The performance of these devices is limited due to poor magnetic coupling between the primary and secondary windings, which is a source of errors. In the case of strong currents, this may even result in saturation of the parts of the magnetic circuit which are remote from the place where the element sensitive to the magnetic field is placed. The measurement errors are even greater when the primary winding is formed simply by a straight conductor passing through the middle of the magnetic circuit. In fact, this conductor is part of an electrical loop, the plane of which can occupy any positions with respect to the secondary winding, and thereby play an additional harmful role on the partial saturation of the magnetic circuit.
One could try to avoid these errors by increasing the section of the magnetic circuit, but this way of proceeding quickly leads to the use of a transformer of exaggerated dimensions, in particular in the case of measurement of high currents.
The object of the present invention is to avoid measurement errors without having to resort to an increase in the section of the magnetic circuit.
The subject of the invention is a device of the aforementioned type in which the magnetic circuit of the transformer is divided into several distinct sections each comprising a sensitive element associated with an amplifier and with a secondary winding, said secondary windings all having an identical number of turns and common flow in a single measuring circuit.
The appended drawing shows a known device and, by way of example, an embodiment of the device which is the subject of the invention.
Fig. 1 represents the known device.
Fig. 2 shows said embodiment.
In the known device, illustrated in FIG. 1, a transformer consists of an iron frame I of rectangular shape.
This carcass 1 has an air gap 2 in which is disposed an element 3 sensitive to the magnetic field prevailing in this air gap. This element 3 can in particular consist of a Hall effect cell. This cell is supplied by a current supplied by two batteries 4 and 5 connected in series and the connection point of which is connected to earth. When the cell 3 is placed in a magnetic field transverse to its plane, it gives a voltage between two electrodes 6 and 7 arranged perpendicularly to the current flowing through it. This voltage is applied to an amplifier 8 whose gain is very high and whose output supplies a secondary winding 9 placed on the frame 1.
In the drawing, this winding 9 has been shown on a branch different from that containing cell 3 for greater clarity, but in principle this secondary winding is arranged on the branch in which cell 3 is located.
As soon as a magnetic field acts on cell 3, the amplifier causes a current to circulate in winding 9 which must cancel out the magnetic field producing said voltage and due to the passage of current in a primary winding 10 which is the more often constituted by a simple rectilinear conductor. The current flowing in the secondary winding 9 is measured by an ammeter A, which gives an indication proportional to the current flowing in the primary winding 10.
As already indicated above, the magnetic field is not homogeneous in the casing 1 when the primary current is high.
This drawback is eliminated in the embodiment illustrated in FIG. 2. In this embodiment, the magnetic carcass 1 has four air gaps respectively equipped with four cells 11, 12, 13 and 14. Each cell is associated with a secondary winding formed in two parts I la, I 1b, 12a, 1 2b ... arranged symmetrically on each side of the corresponding cell.
Each cell supplies a signal which is applied to an amplifier 11c, 12c ... associated with this cell and supplying the corresponding secondary winding. In this way, when there is an asymmetry in the magnetic field induced by the primary current in the different branches of the frame 1, each cell gives an indication of the real magnetic field in the branch into which it is introduced, and this field is practically canceled by the secondary winding relating to this cell. No branch can thus be saturated.
All the secondary windings have the same number of turns and are interconnected by their end opposite to that receiving the current from the amplifier, so that the sum of the currents through the secondary windings passes through a single ammeter 15. In this way , this ammeter gives an indication corresponding to the sum of the magnetic fields produced in the various branches of the frame I by the current flowing in the primary conductor 10. The measurement is thus practically not influenced by the dissymmetries of the primary magnetic field induced in carcass 1, and corresponds precisely to the primary current divided by the number of turns of a secondary winding.
