Fig. 2 einen Schnitt nach Linie A-A in Fig. 1.

The invention relates to a chuck for lathes with base jaws which can be radially displaced in a housing and on which top jaws that can be rotated out are attached.
For machining cylindrical workpieces on lathes, it is already known to clamp the workpieces in special top jaws, so-called soft jaws, the clamping surfaces of which have previously been turned exactly to the diameter of the workpiece to be machined. These removable top jaws are screwed to the base jaws of the chuck. To achieve precise centering of the top jaws, i. H. to correct the play of the base jaws in their drive mechanism and in the guides. it is common practice to clamp so-called turning rings into the top jaws before they are turned out.
This has the disadvantage. that the clamping surfaces of the top jaws can only be turned out over part of their depth.
A device is already known which can be attached to the outside of the top jaws and which allows the jaws to be clamped inward or outward in the radial direction. However, this device and its operation are very complicated.
The aim of the invention is to create a chuck with top jaws that can be turned out, which is simple in structure and operation and which, despite any play in the base jaws, is intended to enable the top jaws to be turned out precisely in the center.
The chuck according to the invention is characterized. that in the top jaws on the side resting on the base jaws a transverse groove is arranged in which a brake piece is inserted, which protrudes on both sides over the top jaws and rests on the end face of the housing, and that a clamping screw is also arranged in the top jaws above the brake piece to press the brake piece against the face of the housing.
This design makes it possible to press the brake pieces against the face of the housing and the base jaws against their guide in the housing by tightening the clamping screws, thereby eliminating the play when adjusting the jaws.
An exemplary embodiment of the subject matter of the invention is shown schematically in the drawing. Show it:
1 shows a plan view of the end face of a chuck with screwed-out top jaws and
FIG. 2 shows a section along line A-A in FIG. 1.
The chuck has a base body 5. in which three base jaws 1 are guided in a radially displaceable manner. You can in a known and therefore not shown way, e.g. B.
are clamped centrically by spindles engaging in the teeth of the base jaws. So-called soft, d. H. unscrewable top jaws 2 screwed on.
In the drawing, only the holes 6, 7 are shown, into which the connecting screws are inserted, which rigidly connect the top jaws 2 to the base jaws 1.
The top jaws have a transverse groove 2a on their underside, into which a brake piece 3 is inserted, which protrudes on both sides over the top jaws and rests on the end face 1a of the housing 1. A clamping screw 4 is inserted in a threaded hole in the top jaws 2, directly above the brake piece 3. At its front end, this has a cylindrical pin 4a which engages in a corresponding bore in the brake piece 3. With this pin, the brake piece 3 is fixed in the groove 2a even when the clamping screw 4 is slightly loosened.
Before unscrewing the top jaws, tighten the clamping screws 4 a little. Then the base jaws with the top jaws are set to the desired workpiece contour, so that only a little material has to be turned off the clamping surfaces of the top jaws.
The top jaws can then be turned out. Due to the friction of the brake pieces 3 on the end face la, any play that may be present in the drive mechanism of the base jaws is eliminated so that the top jaws can be turned out precisely in the center.
