Cinematic set
The focusing of a camera on a subject located at a determined distance is generally effected by optical means, for example by means of a reflex viewfinder equipped with a frost or microprisms. To achieve good focus, it is necessary to bring the subject or part of the subject to the center of the viewfinder by aiming the camera appropriately.
Cinematographic cameras are already known in which the focusing is carried out automatically. For example, cameras which incorporate a telemetry device of the kind comprising a projector providing a narrow light beam to form a spot on the object whose distance is to be measured, this device having a receiver, comprising an optical system converging to form an image of the light spot, and means sensitive to the distance of convergence in the receiving system of the rays coming from the spot.
Such a camera generally has a single viewfinder making it possible both to frame the shooting and to direct the light beam from the range finder. The range finder axis of sight must therefore coincide closely with that of the camera viewfinder and the distance measured is always that which corresponds to the object located in the vicinity of the center of the field of view.
For professional shots, it is inconvenient to have to first center the camera on the main subject, or part of it, to measure the distance before being able to carry out the final framing of the camera. In particular, the main advantages of an automatic focusing, speed of measurement, possibility of permanently maintaining a moving subject in the plane of better sharpness, can thus be lost.
The object of the present invention is to remedy this drawback and to give an automatic focusing system for a camera maximum flexibility of use. Its object is a cinematographic assembly comprising a camera and a telemetry device flexibly coupled to enable the axis of sight of the telemetry device to be oriented obliquely with respect to that of the camera.
The single figure of the appended drawing represents, schematically and by way of example, one embodiment of the object of the invention.
The assembly comprises a camera 1 and a telemetry device 2. The telemetry device is of the light beam type, or of a luminous nature, for example infrared rays, forming a spot on the object whose distance is to be estimated. This device comprises a convergent receiving optical system, as well as means for measuring, in this receiving system, the distance of convergence of the rays coming from the spot formed on said object. Such a rangefinder is described, for example, in Swiss Patent No. 499985.
Camera 1 has a line of sight 3 which passes between two subjects 4 and 5 which are somewhat distant from each other. If the axis of sight of the telemetry device 2 were parallel and substantially coincident with that of the camera, the light beam would pass between the two objects and would form the light spot on an object located behind them, or else would go lost to infinity. The rangefinder device 2 would therefore give an indication that does not correspond to the distance between subjects 4 and 5. The same fault could occur in the case of an object placed in the foreground with respect to the real subject when the focus must be. performed on the real subject and not on the foreground.
Finally, if the subject 5 moved along the line f starting from a point 5 'located outside the field of view of the camera, an autofocus would only be possible when the subject crosses the line of sight. aim 3.
The telemetry device 2, which operates according to the principle described in the aforementioned patent, is coupled to the focusing mechanism of the camera by the intermediary of a cable 6 which can transmit either a mechanical torque or an electrical signal. In this way, the operator, or the assistant operator, has the possibility of directing the line of sight 7 of the telemetry device 2 independently of the line of sight of the camera 1. The telemetry device 2 comprises for this effect a viewfinder 8 which makes it possible to place the light spot at the desired location of the subject.
In the illustrated case, the line of sight 7 is directed on the subject 5, so that the focus of the camera is adjusted according to the distance between the rangefinder device and the subject. It is, of course, necessary that the rangefinder device and the camera are relatively close to each other and that their reference planes for measuring distances substantially coincide.
Thanks to the arrangement described, it is even possible to direct the rangefinder device 2 at a subject 5 'located outside the field of view, so that the adjustment of the focusing distance of the camera is already carried out at the moment when the subject enters the field by following, for example, the arrow f. The operator assistant can direct the rangefinder device to follow the subject as it moves, so that the focus is continuously adjusted.
In the case, for example, where the energy available at the output of the ranging device is not sufficient to ensure the focusing of the camera fully automatically, it is perfectly conceivable that the ranging device simply displays the measurement of the distance. and that the operator aid performs the corresponding focusing of the camera by means of a control button located on the telemetry device and by means of the flexible cable.
The display of the distance measurement could also be done on the camera, the corresponding data being transmitted by the connecting cable.
