Beispiel I

Process for the preparation of an aqueous solution of 1,3-dimethylol-4,5-dihydroxy-2-imidazolidinone
The invention relates to a process for the preparation of stable aqueous solutions of 1,3-dimethylol 4,5-dihydroxy-2-imidazolidinone, which is sometimes also referred to as dimethylol monourein or dimethylol dihydroxyethyl urea.
1,3-Dimethylol-4,5-dihydroxy - 2 - imidazolidinone has the following structural formula
EMI1.1
The above imidazolidinone is a valuable textile finishing agent, particularly for use as a wrinkle-proofing agent for cellulosic textile fabrics including mixtures of such fabrics with other fibers such as polyamides and polyesters. While it can be used as a conventional anti-crease finish in the manner described in US Pat. No. 2,731,364, its technical importance is currently in use as a post-cure anti-crease finish of the type applicable to the process described in US Pat. No. 2974432 is.
There are currently three known processes for the preparation of 1,3-dimethylol-4,5-dihydroxy-2-imidazolidinone from urea, glyoxal and formaldehyde. All known processes are two-step processes.
According to one process, urea and glyoxal are reacted under alkaline conditions to give 4,5-dihydroxy-2-imidazolidinone, which is then reacted with formaldehyde under neutral or alkaline conditions (see USA patents 2731 472 and 2764573).
In a second process, urea and formaldehyde are reacted under alkaline conditions to give dimethyl urea, which is then reacted with glyoxal under alkaline conditions to form the imidazolidinone (US Pat. No. 2,876,062).
According to the information in US Pat. No. 3,049,446, the product of the first process, which is described in US Pat. Nos. 2,731,472 and 2,764,573, is dark brown and discolored garments unless the intermediate monourein is purified before it is purified with formaldehyde is implemented.
According to the third method, urea and glyoxal are reacted at a pH of 3.8 to 4.2 and then with formaldehyde at a pH of 7.0 to 7.5 (British patent specification 1,032,379).
In all of the processes described above, the yield is generally low and the products contain large amounts of unreacted formaldehyde and glyoxal. The product of the second process, described in U.S. Patent 2,876,062, has been found to be unstable as evidenced by discoloration on aging.
The invention therefore aims at a simplified one-step process for the production of stable aqueous solutions of 1,3-dimethylol-4,5-dihydroxy-2-imidazolidinone, which is characterized by good color and good stability and is just as effective as a crease-proofing agent for cellulose textile fabrics like products that are manufactured according to the known, more complex two-step process.
The inventive method for preparing a stable aqueous solution of 1,3-dimethylol-4,5-dihydroxy-2-imidazolidinone is characterized in that 1 mol part of urea with 0.8 to 1.3 molar parts of glyoxal and 1.6 to 2 , 5 molar parts of formaldehyde in an aqueous medium at a pH maintained above 7 and a temperature between 30 u. 1000C is held.
As indicated above, the invention relates to a one-step process for the manufacture of a product which in terms of its anti-crease effect is practically equivalent to similar products made by the known more elaborate processes.
Preferably, molar ratios of 1 mol of urea to 0.9 to 1.1 mol of glyoxal and 1.8 to 2.2 mol of formaldehyde are used. It has been found that consistently good results are achieved if molar ratios are maintained within the preferred ranges.
As indicated above, the aqueous reaction medium must be kept above pH 7 and preferably between pH 7.5 and 9.5. The alkaline pH value is achieved by adding enough alkali that this alkaline pH value is established at the beginning and by continuously adding suitable alkaline substances during the course of the reaction. Suitable alkaline substances include, for example, sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide, sodium carbonate and their equivalents.
As indicated above, the reaction mixture is heated to a temperature between 30 and 1000C and preferably between 60 and 700C. It has proven to be useful to allow the temperature of the reaction mixture to rise gradually until the desired reaction temperature is reached. The reaction temperature is maintained until the reaction is practically complete, which is indicated by a content of unreacted aldehyde of not more than 2%, preferably not more than 1.2%. The content of free formaldehyde is determined by standard analytical methods.
After the reaction has ended, the solution is normally cooled and enough acid, preferably hydrochloric acid, is added to achieve a pH between 5.0 and 5.4.
If desired, the color can be improved even further by adding sodium chlorite or similar bleaching agents to the aqueous solution.
Textile finishes obtained by the process according to the invention are stable, practically colorless solutions. They are obtained with little effort and in excellent yield. The products can be applied to cellulose fabrics by known methods and permanently bonded to them by conventional curing processes. Textile cellulose materials finished with the products according to the invention, for example cotton fabric, are distinguished by a high degree of freedom from ironing (wash-and-wear) and other advantageous properties and are not discolored by the finish.
The products according to the invention can be used with other textile agents and auxiliaries, for example softeners, brighteners, odorants and other anti-crease agents.
The following examples illustrate the invention without restricting it. Parts and percentages relate to weight unless otherwise stated.
Example I.
A suitable reaction vessel is charged with 2840 parts (41.6 mol) of the above aqueous formaldehyde solution and 3000 parts (20.7 mol) of 40% aqueous glyoxal solution. About 55 parts of a 24% strength aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide are added in order to adjust the pH to 8.0 to 8.5, and then 1250 parts (20.8 mol) of urea are added. The temperature of the reaction is allowed to rise to about 50 ° C. and 45 parts of a 24% strength aqueous solution of caustic soda are added. Then the temperature is allowed to rise to 65-700C and held at this value for 2 hours. During the period of 2 hours, additional amounts of sodium hydroxide are added as a 24% strength aqueous sodium hydroxide solution in order to keep the pH at 8 to 8.5.
50 parts of 24% sodium hydroxide solution are added after 10 minutes, 25 parts after 30 minutes and 35 parts after 1 hour.
The reaction mixture is cooled to about 30 ° C. and 7 parts of sodium chlorite and then sufficient concentrated hydrochloric acid are added to set a pH of 5.0 to 5.4. The solution is then mixed with 1320 parts of water.
The product is an aqueous solution of 1,3 dimethylol-4,5-dihydroxy-2-imidazolidinone that contains 45% solids and less than 1.0% unreacted aldehyde. It is stable during storage and can be applied to textile materials without further processing.
