Electric Discharge Lamp The invention relates to an electric discharge lamp with a series ballast resistor, which receives its operating current via an AC-fed rectifier-capacitor bridge. According to the invention, such a lamp is characterized in that the equivalent resistance value of the series ballast resistor is less than 1 3a of that of the discharge lamp.
The equivalent resistance of a discharge lamp is given by the following relationship:
EMI0001.0007
where R, = equivalent resistance E = voltage across the lamp W = lamp power For certain types of lamps, e.g. B. encased HOClldruckmetallda mpflampen, the required resistance can be formed by a filament which is arranged in the space between the discharge tube and the outer shell; in such cases the filament produces light immediately after switching on the lamp and also accelerates the heating of the lamp.
In the case of lamps which have a large voltage drop across the discharge path during heating, part or all of the series resistor can be bridged during normal operation.
The discharge lamp according to the invention is particularly suitable for operation with a circuit arrangement which does not belong to the present invention but is useful for understanding it, which is characterized in that a bridge circuit is connected between the AC input terminals of the circuit arrangement has two branches, each containing a rectifier and a capacitor in series, the rectifiers in the two branches being polarized for opposite current directions, so that each capacitor is bridged with a shunt rectifier,
polarized opposite to the series rectifier in the same branch, and that the connection points of the series rectifier and the capacitor in each branch form the connection points for a load circuit containing the discharge lamp, the whole thing in such a way that the load circuit is in each case during part of the period of the Operating AC power is received from the input terminals directly through the rectifier.
In the case of a rectifier-capacitor bridge of the type mentioned, the load circuit with the discharge lamp is operated with a rectified current with a very large ripple. The current flow through the lamp results not only from the discharge, but also from the charging of the capacitors in the bridge circuit. The lamp current has a pronounced alternating component superimposed on the direct current component, the base frequency of which is twice the mains frequency. This mode of operation is possible because the discharge lamp is a load,
which can assume two different impedance states at a voltage-dependent transition point, which results in an energy supply after the lamp with a high degree of efficiency.
A special feature of this circuit is that the amount of additional ballast or the partial current regulation. which can be achieved with a series impedance to the lamp in the load circuit is relatively low. The energy converted in such an impedance can generally be less than a third of the energy converted in the lamp.
It is therefore entirely advisable to use an ohmic resistor, in particular a filament, for this purpose, although the overall efficiency is the same or better than when using a conventional, reactive ballast impedance. An embodiment of the subject matter of the invention is explained in more detail below in connection with the drawing. Corresponding parts are labeled with the same reference numbers in the different felts.
Fiz. 1 is the circuit diagram of a ballast circuit in connection with a discharge lamp, Fig. 2a, b and c are equivalent circuit diagrams for the circuit of Fig. 1 during different sections of the AC cycle, and Fig. 3 illustrates an example of a high pressure mercury vapor lamp in connection with the Ballast switching :; and with partly new resistance ballast.
The equalizing or hybrid rectifier-capacitor bridge according to Fiu. 1 consists of two branches, each of which contains a rectifier in series with a capacitor between the input points j1, j2 and a shunt rectifier bridging the capacitor. In the two branches, the series rectifiers are polarized with opposite forward direction. The shunt rectifier in each branch is polarized opposite to the @serial rectifier in the same branch.
As shown, the terminals S1, S2 of the AC network are connected to the input points j1, j2. One branch contains the rectifier D1 in series with the capacitor C1, D1 being polarized in this way. that it derives the current from point j1; the shunt rectifier D3 is polarized opposite to the series rectifier D1.
The other branch contains the rectifier D2 in series with the capacitor C2, D2 being polarized for the current flow to the point j1; the shunt rectifier D4 is polarized opposite to the series rectifier D2 in the same branch. The rectifiers are preferably formed by semi-conductor diodes with good efficiency, for example silicon diodes, and electrolytic capacitors can be used as capacitors. The circuit can also be described as a full-wave rectifier bridge, in which a capacitor is connected between each output terminal and one of the input terminals.
The connection points j3 and j4 between the series diode and capacitor in each branch form the output points between which the load circuit is connected. The load circuit contains the actual load L and in series with this possibly a ballast impedance Z to achieve a certain additional current regulation. The actual load L is formed by a discharge lamp which, as is known, has negative impedance characteristics in the 12ez: indeten state.
Since the series impedance Z only has to take over a partial current regulation, this can easily be formed by a tungsten wire, for example in the form of a separate incandescent lamp or also as part of the discharge lamp unit.
2a, 2b and 2c represent equivalent circuit diagrams which illustrate the state of the bridge circuit according to FIG. 1 during different sections of the alternating current half-wave, in which the Mo mentanwert of the alternating voltage at terminal S1 is positive (the polarity is through in the usual way indicated by the arrow between the input terminals). During a first part of the half-wave, D1 is biased in the forward direction and D2, D3 and D4 in the reverse direction, and a current flows through C2.
If the voltage prevailing at C2 at the beginning of the positive half-cycle is denoted by (VC2) "the voltage across the lamp L is denoted by VL, the instantaneous value of the lamp current is denoted by i and the instantaneous value of the applied voltage is denoted by E - sin cut, then the relation applies
EMI0002.0061
During this interval of the half cycle, the current through the lamp is passed through the capacitor C2, i. H. determines the capacitor in the other branch.
In the next section of the half-wave, D1 and D4 are biased in the forward direction, while D2 and D3 are biased in the reverse direction; VL is less than E - sin oot, and the following relationship holds:
E - sin asst = 'Z -_ VL During this section of the half-wave, the lamp receives energy from the network directly via two rectifiers, namely via the series rectifier in one branch and the shunt rectifier in the other branch. The ballast impedance, if any, is only effective during this time segment of the half-wave.
In the final section of the half-wave, D4 are biased in the forward direction and D1, D2 and D3 in the reverse direction. If (V.1) 1 denotes the voltage at C1 at the moment when VL becomes better than E - sin cot, the situation is represented by the following equation:
EMI0002.0087
During this part of the half-cycle, the energy of the lamp is drawn from the capacitor C1 in one branch and flows away via the shunt rectifier D4 in the other branch.
In the interest of low ballast losses and a high efficiency, it is useful to choose the lamp voltage close to the supply voltage. The current is then partly fed directly from the mains to the lamp, flowing via the series rectifier in one branch and the shunt rectifier in the other branch and only a small ballast impedance is required.
The advantages of such an operation are an improved power factor compared to operation with a capacitive ballast mouth and a higher degree of efficiency compared with the use of conventional ballast impedances, especially compared with the case in which the ballast impedance is formed by a resistor.
In Fig. 3, a lamp unit, i. H. the combina tion of a lamp with a ballast circuit of the type described be shown, which unit, especially in terms of high efficiency, low cost. low weight and small footprint is designed. The actual lamp 1 generally corresponds to a 400 watt high pressure mercury vapor lamp with the trade name E400A33-1. The lamp has an outer, egg-shaped shell 2 made of soft glass.
The neck 3 of the shell is completed in the usual \ `` ice by an inverted punch through which the lead wires 4 and 5 extend, of which he stere with the isolated center contact 6 and the latter with the threaded sleeve 7 of the base, for example a conventional screw base. The inner discharge tube 11 made of quartz contains at the opposite ends the main discharge electrodes 12 and 13, which are arranged on band-shaped, .yen bushings, which are fused in the flattened, pinched ends of the tube.
Each electrode has a double helix made of tungsten wire, which is activated with a mixture of alkaline earth metal owden, which facilitates electron emission. An ignition or auxiliary electrode 14J is located at the end of the discharge tube on the base side and is connected to the main electrode 13 at the opposite end of the discharge tube via a current limiting resistor U.
The discharge tube is centered in the outer bulb by a one-sided, rod-shaped bracket 16 which extends from the passage 4 to an indentation 17 in the apex of the outer shell and surrounds it with a resilient clamp 18. The discharge tube is connected to the bracket 16 in that the flattened tube ends are clamped between: metal strips 19 and 20 which extend between the lateral rod 16 and opposite ends 21, 22 of the rod. The rod 16 also serves as a conductive connection between the main electrode 13 and the bushing 4, which in turn is connected to the center contact 6 of the base.
The discharge tube contains mercury and an inert gas, such as argon, at a pressure of less than 100 mm Hg.
The lamp is inserted in a screw socket 24 of conventional form, the base part 25 of which contains the components of the mixed rectifier-capacitor bridge 26 on the upper side. The components and connection points of the bridge are identified in FIG. 3 in the same way as in the diagram of FIG. 1. The components of the bridge are housed in a recess in the base part 25, so that the entire arrangement 26 can be accommodated in a conventional junction box 27 .
The capacities C1, C2 are each formed by two high-voltage electrical capacitors, which are arranged in pairs on the side of the base part 25; the semiconductor diodes D1 to D4 are grouped in the central space between the capacitors.
The ballast impedance Z is present in the form of a tungsten filament 28, which is mounted in the space inside the outer shell 3, but outside the discharge tube 11. The filament is divided into two sections 28a, 28b, which are connected in series with the aid of a conductor strip 31 between an extension 29 of the implementation 5 and the leadthrough wire of the main electrode 12. When the lamp is started and while it is heating up, the two filament sections 28a and 28b are connected in series with the lamp between the starting points j3 and j4 of the bridge circuit.
This effectively limits the current, and at the same time the filament already generates useful light and accelerates the heating of the discharge tube. With increasing heating and rising pressure in the discharge tube, it is useful to short-circuit part of the filament. This is done by means of a U-shaped bimetal strip 32 which is attached to the lead wire to the main electrode 12 and whose free end interacts with a conductor 33 in order to establish contact with the connection point between the filament sections 28a and 28b when the bimetal is heated .
From the section 28b is short-circuited, and only the section 28a of the filament in series with the discharge tube remains during normal operation of the lamp. Glass beads 34 form insulating stiffeners between the holding organs for the filament sections. For example, the operating data of a lamp unit according to Fig. 3 for operation on an alternating current network of 117.5 V, 60 Hz are given below:
EMI0003.0041

<tb> Power factor: <SEP> 88 <SEP> 0! o
<tb> Volume: <SEP> 32.8 <SEP> cmo
<tb> Weight: <SEP> 142 <SEP> g The equivalent Xt 'resistance of the discharge tube is about 40 ohms and that of the filament is about 12 ohms when both sections are connected in series.
The resistance of section 28a, with short-circuited section 28b, is about 3 ohms at operating temperature. Although the lamp unit according to FIG. 3 is provided with a ballast resistor, its current regulator is less than the effect of the actual equalizing bridge.
This circumstance enables a VKI, .zsUrad of 95 0'0, i.e. in the order of magnitude of known circuits with reactive ballast impedance. In contrast, the combinations of mercury vapor discharge lamp and ballast incandescent lamp known to date only resulted in a ballast effect wheel in the order of magnitude of 50%, which is why the arrangement described here constitutes a completely new class.
The lamp according to FiQ. 3 is specially built with an effective filament @ V 'resistance of less than 1% 3 of the equivalent resistance of the discharge path and for operation with a compensating, mixed rectifier-capacitor bridge. If this lamp were operated on a mains voltage that would be sufficient to start the discharge, the incandescent filament would burn out immediately. Of course, the lamp shown can also be connected to the ballast circuit to form a structural unit which, like an incandescent lamp, is directly connected to an alternating current network of e.g.
B. 115 to 120 V, 60 Hz can be operated.
