wenn also dieGlimmentladung ineineLichtbogenentla- dung übergeht.
Protective circuit for glow discharge path The present invention relates to a protective circuit which responds to irregular changes in the discharge state of a glow discharge path, in particular to the transition from the glow discharge to an arc discharge.
Various protective circuits of this type have already become known, in particular in connection with technical glow discharge processes. Although these known contactor circuits fulfill their purpose with sufficient sensitivity and sufficiently small response time constant, they switch off the energy supply to the discharge path in whole or in part at the transition from the glow discharge to an arc discharge depending on the conditions necessary to prevent the occurrence of an arc discharge, but they speak often even then
if there is no transition from the glow discharge to an arc discharge at all, e.g. to fluctuations in the mains voltage and other effects that briefly influence the discharge voltage or the discharge current but do not cause a transition to an arc discharge, in other words, the response criteria of the known protective circuits could not be clearly assigned to the transition from the glow discharge to an arc discharge , but also under certain other conditions that occur during normal work operations.
With the known protective circuits, the operation of the glow discharge path with a constantly or periodically changing energy supply caused particular difficulties, e.g. Alternating current operation, direct current pulse operation and direct current operation with superimposed pulses.
For example, with direct current operation with superimposed pulses during the duration of the pulses, i.e. with a significantly increased discharge voltage, there is insufficient security of timely response of the protective circuit if the switch-off criterion is that the voltage falls below a certain minimum because this minimum voltage is below the stän dig must be maintained at the basic voltage and is therefore significantly below the discharge voltage during the pulse duration,
so that with a transition from the glow discharge to an arc discharge during the pulse duration, the formation of the arc discharge or the transition to the same when the discharge voltage collapses down to this minimum voltage has progressed so far that the safety switch can usually no longer respond in time and therefore only switches off the arc that has already arisen, so it can no longer completely avert the disruptive effect of the arc on the workpiece to be treated, for example.
The object underlying the invention was therefore to find switch-off criteria which clearly only occur when the glow discharge changes into an arc discharge and which are independent of the absolute values of the discharge voltage and the discharge current and independent of the intended operating mode of the glow - Charge path (direct current operation, pulse operation, alternating current operation) occur.
According to the invention, the protective circuit which responds to irregular changes in the discharge state of a glow discharge path, in particular to the transition from the glow discharge to an arc discharge, is achieved in that the response criterion of the protective circuit is an opposing change in the discharge current and discharge voltage.
To form the response criterion, a differentiating circuit is preferably provided, the input variables of which are discharge current JE and discharge voltage UE or the same proportional variables and which uses these to form one of the partial changes in the discharge voltage with the discharge current and emits it as an output variable, with
EMI0002.0009
proportional or inversely proportional the fuse switch is designed so that it responds to a negative output variable.
Another advantageous possibility is that to form the response criterion a differentiating circuit for time differentiation of the discharge voltage U. or one of the same proportional variable and a differentiating circuit for time differentiation of the discharge current JE or
the same proportional quantity are provided, which the temporal change of the discharge

<tb> discharge current <SEP> output proportional <SEP> output variables, and that the safety switch is designed so that it responds to output variables with different signs.
The differentiating circuits are expediently designed in such a way that a differentiating element consisting of the series connection of a capacitor with an ohmic resistor is used as a differentiating circuit for the time differentiation of the discharge voltage and a differentiating element consisting of the parallel connection of an inductance and an ohmic resistor as a differentiating circuit for time differentiation of the discharge current existing <RTI
ID = "0002.0033"> differentiator is provided.
Another advantageous possibility of designing the differentiating circuits is that loaded transformers are provided as differentiating circuits for the time differentiation of the discharge voltage and the discharge current, the secondary windings of which form the outputs of the differentiating circuits.
If the response criterion is formed by the time differentiation of the discharge voltage and the discharge current, it is particularly advantageous to connect the outputs of the two differentiating circuits to an AND circuit, which is only used with

<tb> positive <SEP> and <SEP> at the same time <SEP> negative <SEP>
<tb> dt <SEP> dt emits an output signal which represents the response criterion.
Another advantageous possibility for the formation of the protective circuit is that a bridge is provided for the formation of the response criterion, which in a first branch of the bridge has a discharge current or
a simulation of the glow discharge path through which the same proportional current flows with at least approximately the voltage behavior, in a second bridge branch adjacent to the first bridge branch the glow discharge path itself or one with the discharge voltage or
one of the same proportional voltage applied resistor, in each of the two remaining bridge branches a capacitor and in the bridge diagonal between the connection point of the two capacitors and the connection point of the first with the second bridge branch has a resistance, and that the fuse switch is designed in this way that it responds when the absolute potential difference along the second bridge branch is less than the absolute potential difference along the capacitor that is located in the bridge branch adjacent to the second bridge branch.
Of course, a protective circuit according to the invention can also be designed in such a way that, in addition to the response criterion of an opposite change in discharge current and discharge voltage, it responds to one or more further response criteria, preferably to the response criterion of falling below a certain minimum voltage and / or the response criterion of exceeding a specific maximum current responds.
Using the following figures, the invention is described in more detail below using a few exemplary embodiments. 1 shows a basic circuit diagram of a protective circuit according to the invention in which the response criterion

5 shows a basic circuit diagram of a protective circuit according to the invention which additionally responds to the response criteria of exceeding a certain maximum discharge current and falling below a certain minimum discharge voltage.
In the basic circuit diagram shown in FIG. 1, the generator 1 can output any generator voltage, for example direct voltage or alternating voltage or direct voltage with superimposed direct voltage pulses. The fuse switch 2 is of a known type and need not be explained in more detail here.
For example, the safety switch can be designed as shown and described in patent specification 389.797 or as shown and described in patent specification 413.045, but with the difference that the response criterion is formed in the manner described here. Furthermore, the safety switch can also consist of one or more controllable switching elements connected into the discharge current path, e.g. Tubes exist whose current passage is blocked if the response criterion is present.
For example, in the patent 374,779 such a fuse circuit device, in which tubes lying in the current paths are used as controllable switching elements, is made and described. A voltage kZUE proportional to the discharge voltage UE is formed by the voltage divider 4 lying parallel to the glow discharge path 3, and a quantity k1JE proportional to the discharge current JE is formed by the resistor 5 lying in the discharge current path.
The variables k1JE and k2UE form the input variables of a differentiating circuit 6.

<tb> dJE <SEP> dJE forms and outputs this as an output variable. The partial change in the discharge voltage with the discharge current is the only characteristic feature from which a criterion for the occurrence or the presence of an arc discharge can be obtained.
The current voltage characteristic of a glow discharge has, at least in the area of the abnormal cathode drop, a positive current voltage characteristic, i.e. as the discharge current increases, the discharge voltage must increase. As long as the working point of the glow discharge path lies on a glow discharge characteristic, the partial change in the discharge voltage must correspond to the discharge current or the differential quotient

positive or (in the normal cathode range) at least equal to zero.
Because with a positive voltage characteristic a differential increase of the voltage + dUE brings a differential increase of the current + dJE and a differential decrease of the voltage - dUE a differential decrease of the current -dJE,
i.e. the differential quotient is independent of the working point on the glow tube

and therefore independent of the absolute values of discharge current and discharge voltage and also independent of the change in the discharge voltage and the discharge current or
on the direction (increase or decrease) in which the discharge voltage and the discharge current move, positive or (in the normal cathode range) at least <B> +0 </B> as long as the operating point is on a glow discharge characteristic, i.e. a characteristic with a positive voltage characteristic.
In the case of an arc discharge, on the other hand, and also in the transition area from a glow discharge to an arc discharge, the current-voltage characteristic of the discharge is negative, i.e. as the discharge current increases, the discharge voltage decreases.
The partial change in the discharge voltage with the discharge current is on a characteristic curve with a negative current voltage characteristic at any desired working point. so the differential auo-

<SEP> Since <SEP> is the <SEP> differential quotient
<tb> dJE <SEP> dJE only becomes negative on a characteristic with a negative voltage characteristic and the transition from an operating point on a glow discharge characteristic to a characteristic with a negative voltage characteristic must inevitably lead to a discharge with a lower voltage at a higher current and thus to an arc discharge ,

a clear criterion for the transition of the criterion already arises at the beginning of the transition from the glow discharge to an arc discharge, because the discharge voltage has to decrease at the beginning of the transition from a glow discharge to an arc discharge. This criterion therefore arises in good time to enable the energy supply to the discharge to be switched off before an arc discharge has been fully developed.
The output quantity delivered by the differentiating circuit 6
EMI0003.0086
which forms the criterion for the transition of the glow discharge into an arc discharge in the case of a negative value, is given to the valve circuit 7, which only applies to negative values of

is permeable.
At the resistor 8 of the valve circuit 7 there is only an output signal when
EMI0004.0001
is negative, i.e. when the glow discharge changes into an arc discharge or a discharge form with negative voltage characteristics. This output signal S is sent to the safety switch 2 and has the effect that the safety switch 2 responds and completely or partially switches off the energy supply to the glow discharge path 3.
The differentiating circuit 6 shown as a block in FIG. 1 requires a relatively large effort in its practical implementation, since in principle a quotient has to be formed from the input variables, or more precisely from the changes in the input variables. Circuits for forming the quotient of two electrical input quantities are known, but they require a relatively large amount of switching effort.
dUE However, since the absolute value of is not required to form dJE of the response criterion, but only learn the sign of, it is not necessary to use such a complicated differentiating circuit. those from k1JE and kZUE are the differential quotients

to be used to form the response criterion.
In Fig. 2 a circuit is shown that the requirements for the formation of a clear criterion for the transition of the glow discharge into an arc discharge is fair with much simpler means. This circuit is based on the fact that when the glow discharge changes into an arc discharge, the change in current dJE is positive and the simultaneous change in voltage dUE is negative.
If dJE is positive and dUE is negative, then

when the glow discharge changes into an arc discharge. In all other cases, for example when the working point of the glow discharge path changes over time on the glow discharge characteristic curve, an output signal is only produced at one of the two outputs of the valve circuits 13 and 14. It is therefore possible to use the simultaneous presence of output signals at the valve circuits 13 and 14 as a response criterion.
For this purpose, the outputs of the valve circuits 13 and 14 are connected to the AND circuit 15, which outputs an output signal S to the valve circuits 13 and 14 only when output signals are present at the same time. AND circuits are generally known from the art of electronic calculating machines and do not need to be explained in more detail here.
They basically consist of a circuit with two electronic switches connected in series and an output resistor also connected in series, as well as a power source. The circuit is only closed when both electronic switches are closed, i.e. if a control signal is present on both electronic switches. Only then does a voltage arise at the output resistance.
The output of the AND circuit 15 is connected to the safety switch 2, which responds when an output signal S is emitted by the AND circuit 15 and completely or partially switches off the energy supply to the glow discharge path 3.
In Fig. 3 a circuit is shown, which speaks ent in its basic structure of the circuit in Fig. 2, but for differentiating the discharge voltage U "here a best from the parallel connection of an inductance and an ohmic resistor existing differentiator 16 is provided.
In addition, the inductances of both differential elements are designed as transformers, so that the circuit for forming the response criterion is galvanically separated from the circuit of the glow discharge path. The mode of operation is otherwise the same as in the circuit according to FIG. 2.
Another possible circuit for forming the response criterion is shown in FIG. In this circuit, a bridge consisting of 2 capacitances and a replica N of the glow discharge path with at least approximately the same voltage behavior and a resistor with a part of the discharge voltage <B> Up, </B> is used to form the response criterion.
The mode of operation of the circuit is as follows: As long as the discharge current and the discharge voltage remain constant, point 17 is at the same potential as point 18, i.e. the voltage across the resistor 19 is zero and the capacitor 20 is charged to the voltage at the counter was 21, the capacitor 22 to the voltage at the replica N. The bridge equilibrium is maintained even if the discharge current and discharge voltage change in such a way that the operating point of the glow discharge path only shifts on the glow discharge characteristic.
This becomes immediately clear if one imagines that the voltage divider consisting of the resistors 23 and 21 is dispensed with and the glow discharge path 3 is used directly instead of the resistor 21. Since N is a replica of the glow discharge path 3 with the same current-voltage behavior, the division ratio between the glow discharge path 3 and the replica N must remain constant regardless of the current flowing through the glow discharge path 3 and the replica N, in other words,
Displacements of the operating point of the glow discharge path on the glow discharge characteristic and thus also changes in the discharge voltage and current over time do not disturb the bridge equilibrium. The potential difference between points 17 and 18 thus remains zero as long as the working point of the glow discharge path 3 is on the glow discharge characteristic. The operating point can move anywhere on the glow discharge characteristic curve as a function of time.
However, if the operating point deviates from the glow discharge characteristic in the direction of a lower voltage and a higher current or a higher voltage and a lower current, a signal is generated at the resistor 19. Of such signals, the valve circuit 24 only lets through those signals that arise when the operating point of the glow discharge path deviates from the glow discharge characteristic in the direction of lower voltage and higher current.
In this case, an output signal S is emitted to the safety switch 2, which then switches off the energy supply to the glow discharge path 3 in whole or in part. In Fig. 5, a protective circuit is shown, which apart from the response criterion of an opposite change in discharge current and Entladungsspan voltage, also responds to exceeding a certain th maximum current and falling below a certain minimum voltage.
In order to form the response criterion of a change in the discharge current and voltage in opposite directions, the block 25 is provided, which can be configured, for example, in accordance with one of FIGS. 1 to 4. The relay 26 in the discharge circuit, which is only shown schematically here and is usually designed as an electronic relay in practice, is used to form the response criterion of exceeding a certain maximum current.
To form the response criterion of falling below a certain minimum voltage is the parallel to the glow discharge path 3 lying relay 27, which is also shown only schematically and in practice is also usually designed as an electronic relay. If the specified minimum voltage is not reached and / or the specified maximum current is exceeded, the circuit 28 is closed and the voltage source 29 outputs the response criterion T to the fuse switch 2, whereupon the fuse switch 2 completely or partially switches off the energy supply to the glow discharge path.
Finally, the following should be noted: The invention is not limited to the exemplary embodiments shown in the figures. Rather, a whole range of other exemplary embodiments can be specified. The circuits according to FIGS. 2 and 3, as well as the circuit according to FIG. 5 in combination with a circuit according to FIG. 2 or 3, have proven to be particularly expedient exemplary embodiments.
