Electrolyser of the filter press type The invention relates to an electrolyser of the filter press type with circulating electrolyte.
Electrolysers are preferably used for the electrolytic splitting of water and water-containing liquids into hydrogen and oxygen.
The circulation of the electrolyte liquid through the cells and gas separation vessels takes place in known electrolyzers through pipes and channels arranged in the cell block in such a way that the electrolyte is usually fed to the cells from below,
the electrolyte enriched with gases; on the top of the electrolysis block in the deposition of the. Gas separator vessels serving the electrolyte are discharged,
whereupon the electrolyte fluid flows back to the cells. At least one of the gas separation vessels mentioned is always available for each type of gas to be separated so that the gases produced can be obtained without mixing.
Since the cells of a. Blockes are generally connected in series, the supply and discharge channels form an undesirable electrical shunt.
By appropriately designing the cross-sections and anomalies, the electrolyte channels or the pipelines, it is possible to keep these undesirable electrical short-circuits occurring via the gas separation vessel and their supply lines low,
although the requirement to prevent the undesired transfer of current via the pipelines of the gas separation vessels cannot be coordinated with the requirement for the electrolyte to pass through the electrolyte in a flow-related manner.
The electrical shunts occurring through the pipelines and the resulting ones. Discharges, which are the cause of the formation of dangerous mixed gases outside the cells, are larger in the feed channels for the electrolyte fluid than in the products.
since the gases contained in the electrolyte reduce its conductivity. As before, however, the fact remains, that a current transfer takes place via the pipes and channels of the supply and discharge lines, which
the ancillary devices, such as gas separation vessels for separating the gases from the electrolyte, etc., leads to undesirable electrical discharges.
In order to now occur in electrolysers of the filter press type. To eliminate electrical shunts, but without this measure resulting in an obstruction of the electrolyte circulation, it is proposed according to the present invention, between the deposition,
of the gases from the electrolyte-serving separation vessels and the cell block or the cell blocks of the electrolyzer provide electrically insulating separating sections in the feed and discharge lines of the electrolyte.
With the formation of; Mixed gases outside the cells means the effect of electrical shunts in the gas-electrolyte discharge and supply channels.
The gas development that takes place there is: although not completely prevented by the invention, it is greatly reduced because the arrangement of insulating sections,
A smaller number of electrolyte channels is sufficient to feed the cells and therefore the possibility of shunts is correspondingly lower from the outset.
The isolating separating sections can consist of electrically non-conductive pipes or pipe sections which are arranged in the supply and discharge lines.
The insulating separating section provided in the return line of the electrolyte can advantageously serve as a residual gas separation vessel at the same time. be designed for the residual gases often still contained in the electrolyte.
In order to also completely switch off electrical shunts caused by the circulating electrolyte, it is recommended in addition to the suggestions made, in the middle of the cell block z.
B. apply the positive pole; so that the end cells of this electrolyzer block then have the same potential. The end cells are then negative poles. Has a current transfer to the secondary devices via the electrolyte
-then no disturbing influences due to the equality of the poles. In itself, however, the crossing of the Spannurig can only be accepted by the electrolyte liquid, provided precautions have been taken to prevent contact (earth).
In the figures, the invention is shown in two exemplary embodiments. Details of the construction of the electrolysers are not shown because they are essential for understanding the invention.
The block of the electrolyser consisting of cells 1 is constructed in a known manner to press the type of filter.
The supply of the electrolyte from the separating vessel 2 used for gas separation into the cell block 1 and the passage of the electrolyte through the cell block 1 takes place in the direction of the arrows indicated.
Line 3 is used to supply the electrolyte. The electrolyte enriched with generated gases is discharged via line 4.
In these lines 3 and 4, insulating separating sections made of non-conductive pipe sections 5, 5 'are used, so that no undesirable electrical short-circuit occurs via the vessel used to separate the gases from the electrolyte.
The isolating separating distance in the electrolyte feed 5 'is advantageously designed as a Resiga gas separator 6.
This residual gas separator consists of a vessel in which the pipe 5 ', which is made of an insulating material (plastic, ceramic) and is intended to prevent the transition of the electrical current to the vessel 2 used for gas separation,
enters. The residual gases separated from the electrolyte are drawn off through the pipe 7 to the gas collecting vessel or to the gas cooler,
while the electrolyte is fed back to the cell block of the water separator through the line 3 arranged above the junction of the insulating tube 5 '.
The elimination of residual gases: from the electrolyte is important because if the gases are not completely eliminated, due to the mixing that occurs: the electrolyte outside the cathode and anode spaces: these residual gases can lead to the formation of oxyhydrogen.
In Fig. 2 it is shown how by appropriate application of the poles; to @the cells; harmful bypasses through the electrolyte can be avoided. In .this case z.
B. applied the positive pole in the middle of the cell block 1, so that at the end cells then. a negative voltage is present.
With the present invention, the formation of mixed gases and other harmful or undesirable products can be largely avoided, since no electrical discharge can occur outside the cell block.
