It is known that it is possible to print and dye synthetic polyamides by the so-called dry thermal printing technique using sublimable dyes. This technique is described in French patents Nos. 1223 330 and 1585 119 for example.
One of the major drawbacks of this way of proceeding is the low penetration of the coloring materials into the material to be dyed (or printed); the coloring matters remain on the surface, so that If this technique is applied to materials of a certain thickness. like carpets for example (materials which it is difficult to print and for which this technique has real advantages), one comes up against the difficulty which consists in making the dyes penetrate into the material deep enough so that. under the superficial impression. the inside of the material does not stay white and that. in the case of carpets, for example, the pile is colored over its entire length and not only at its upper part.
This drawback has been overcome by using complicated apparatus. which allows the transfer of coloring matters under vacuum. This equipment, in addition to being more complex than that which is usually used in thermo-printing. does not allow continuous operation and. for this reason too. did not find a very extensive job. so that the dry thermal printing of the carpet remains a problem with many difficulties.
It is known from French Patent No. 2075405 that synthetic polyamides can be dyed and / or printed in depth by using translert papers or other flexible supports which carry at least one layer containing 1.4-. bis (isobutyl) - or 1,4-bis (isopropyl) -aminoanthraquinone It is also known from Swiss Patent No. 572126 that synthetic polyamides can be dyed and / or deep-printed. more particularly high wool rugs, leutres and loop pile carpets or those of the so-called tufted type.
by using transfer papers or other flexible supports which carry at least one 1, 4-bis- (alcoylamino) -anthraquinone of which at least one of the alkyl residues is an isopropyl and which carries a hydrogen atom in position 2 and 3.
Now, the Applicant has also found (and this is the subject of the present patent application) that transfer papers or other flexible supports which carry at least 1.5- bis (alcoylamino) - anthraquinone in which at least one of the alkyl radicals is branched and which bears in position 2 and 3 a hydrogen atom, one of these alkyl radicals preferably being an isopropyl, for example 1.5 -bis- (isopropylamino)
-anthraquinone
Such paplers-transterts which are also the subject of the present invention are prepared. according to the usual methods. that is to say by printing ofl'set, by helio- or tlexo-etching or by printing with the frame, described for example in French patents Nos. 1223330, 15X5119 and 2076149 using as coloring materials the known aminoanthraquinoncs which are the
1,5-bis- (alcoylamino) -anthraquinones in which at least one of the alkyl residues is branched.
and which bear in position 2 and 3 a hydrogen atom, for example 1,5-bis- (isopropylamino) anthraquinone.
The preparation of the dyes which characterize the present invention has been described, for example, in French Patent No. 1044300. They can be used alone or as mixtures with dyes having a similar behavior in the temperature zone where the transfer takes place. i.e. at 120-220 C: by heat-like behavior we mean the amount of dye vaporized or sublimated in a given time at a given temperature.
As dyes which have a behave. Mention may be made, for example, of 1-amino-anthraquinones which carry in position 2 an ethoxy group in this temperature, similarly to the bis- (alkyllamino) -anthraquinones mentioned above. methoxy or methyl! a hydrogen atom or. preferably. a halogen atom, especially a chlorine atom and. in position 4. a hydrogen atom or a hydroxyl. or alternatively 1fl4-bis- (lsopropylamino) - anthraquinone.
The designs or patterns can be covered with a colorless thermoplastic film which makes the transfer papers hot adherent to the materials to be decorated: the film can be produced, for example, with polyvinyl alcohol or a cellulose binder soluble in organic solvents. or else with an acrylic resin, a polyamide. an acetate or a polyvinyl chloride. a polybutyral or a copolymer of vinyl acetate and of ethylene or of vinyl chloride.
With transfer papers obtained with these dyes by offset printing. by gravure or flexogravure or by printing on a flat or rotating frame. polyamide carpets can be printed or dyed like ordinary batch fabrics. on presses, or continuously, on calenders. the only difference with the prior art being that we put more dye on the paper to have the same shade, otherwise we get paler shades.
The transfer time can also be slightly longer (30 to 100 sec. Instead of 10 to 50) to allow the coloring material to encoder penetrate the material to be printed.
Polyamides in fluff. polyamide carpets. felts, carpets and other polyamide materials of a certain thickness dyed or printed according to the present process present. unlike those which are printed according to the known technique. well-penetrated impressions (and dyes). Despite the simplicity of the present process. the penetration of the coloring matters is at least as good as that which can be obtained according to the process which operates in an apparatus for transferring under vacuum.
On the other hand. the deep penetration is done in the tone when we use mixtures and we observe little or no difference in shade (or dichroism) between the top and the bottom of the hair, for example. which is dyed regularly. only the intensity varying with depth.
In the following nonlimiting examples. the parts and percentages indicated are understood. unless otherwise stated, by weight. and temperatures in degrees Celslus.
Example 1.
An ink is prepared by dispersing 10 parts of carefully ground 1,5-bis-isopropylamino-anthraquinone with 7 parts of ethylcellulose (N7) in X3 parts of ethyl alcohol.
By gravure printing a strip of parchment paper of 1.60 m wide is printed using this ink and an inking roller so as to obtain a red design on a white background and it is dried.
A loop pile of polyamide is placed on the sheet of paper thus printed and the whole is passed over a metal plate heated to 200 C. A second plate. not heated. ensures regular contact. The hot contact time is XO sec. This gives a faithful transfer to the carpet.
Instead of loop pile carpet. a low-pile polyamide (hexamethylenic polyadipamide or i: - caprolactam) mat can be used and excellent penetration of the dye which dyes the pile over the entire length is also obtained. as well as good light fastness.
It is also possible to operate continuously on a calender by adjusting the speeds of the printed paper and of the belt to be printed so that they remain in contact. for example. 50 sec. at 210 C.
Excellent penetration is also obtained by heating at 195 ° C. for 3 min or at 170 ° C. for 4 min. Instead of media Printed in one color. one can also use in multicolored support. printed with 1.5- bis-isopropylamino- anthraquinone and one or more other dyes having the same behavior between 150 and 250 C. that is to say whose quantity vaporized or sublimated in a given time and at a given temperature is similar .
This identity of behavior makes it possible to use inks containing a mixture of dyes. without observing any difference in shade between the top and the bottom of the hair, only the intensity varies with the depth.
Example 2.
The procedure is as in Example i but using an ink containing 4 parts of 1,4-bis- (isopropylamino) -anthraquinone.
4 parts of 1.5-bis- (isopropylamino) -anthraquinone and parts of ethylcellulose (N7) in 84 parts of ethyl alcohol. This gives a purple pattern of excellent penetration.
The impression thus obtained is then coated with a thin layer of polyvinyl alcohol using one or more rouveaux and a solution of 6 parts of polyvinyl alcohol in 100 parts of water and 65 parts. ethyl or methyl alcohol. and we dry.
To transfer the design from the strip of paper onto a polyamide mat or felt, the paper is placed in contact with the textile material and the whole is passed over a metal plate electrically heated to 200 C. A second unheated plate ensures regular contact. The hot contact time is 1 min. A faithful transfer of the design is thus obtained, the penetration of which is excellent.
Instead of a drawing, one can also use only one ink and coat the entire surface of the paper web so as to have. after transfer to carpet. no longer a drawing but a plain dye in a single color well penetrated.
Example 3.
On a rotary frame machine, a pattern is printed on a 1.60 m wide strip of paper using aqueous inks containing, as a binder (thickener) polyvinyl alcohol or locust bean gum and as colorants: a) 8 parts of 1,5-bis- (isopropylamino) -anthraquinone (ink
red). b) 7 parts of 1,4-bis- (isopropylamino) -anthraquinone and 2 per
Ties of 1-amino-2-mithylnnthraqulnone (olive green ink). c) 6 parts of i, 5-bis- (isopropylamino) -anthraquinone and 4 per
1,4-bis- (isopropylamino) -anthraquinone tics (vio ink
lette). d) 8 parts of 1-amino-2-methylanthraquinone and 3 parts of
1,5-bis- (isopropylamino) -anthraquinone (reddish brown ink).
To transfer the design from the strip of paper to a mat or polyamide felt. the paper is brought into contact with the textile material and the whole is passed over a calender heated to 205 C. the contact time being 50 sec. This gives a faithful transfer of the design, the penetration of which is excellent.
