Als wasserabspaltende Mittel kommen u. a.

Process for the production of 2,5-di-benzimidazyl-furans In example 12 of the French patent specification 900 722, the production of the 2,5-di- [benzimidazyl- (2 ')] - furans is by heating 1,2-diaminobenzene and Furan-2,5-dicarboxylic acid in a molecular ratio of 2: 1 in the absence of air and in the presence of a small amount of boric acid at a temperature of 140 to 150. However, good yields are unlikely to be achieved.
The yields can be significantly improved if the reaction temperatures are increased to about 200. For example, French patent specification 1218 698 relates to a process for the preparation of 2,5-di- [benzimidazyl- (2 ')] - furan compounds by reacting o-diamines of the benzene series, one amino group of which is primary and the other amino group is at most secondary, with furan-2,5-dicarboxylic acid in an anhydrous medium, preferably in the presence of a small amount of boric acid, which is characterized by
that the reaction is carried out at temperatures of at least 190. In the last-mentioned French patent it is noted that the reaction can be carried out in a suitable, high-boiling solvent, but that this generally produces less good results than if the reaction mixture consists only of the two starting materials and, if appropriate, one wrestling amount of boric acid.
It has now been found that 2,5-di- [benzimidazyl- (2 ')] - furans of the formula
EMI0001.0028
where R is hydrogen atoms or substituents, such as, in particular, alkyl, alkenyl or oxyalkyl groups or aralkyl groups, and R, is hydrogen, low molecular weight alkoxy, such as ethoxy or alkyl groups, by elimination of water in the presence of solvents and with the aid of dehydrating agents from mixtures of furan-2,5-dicarboxylic acid and o-diamines of the formula
EMI0001.0033
or from addition salts of furan-2,
5-dicarboxylic acid with the o-diamines mentioned is prepared according to the invention in a particularly advantageous manner if a high-boiling aliphatic alcohol or ether is used as the solvent.
Suitable solvents of this type are aliphatic alcohols that contain more than one hydroxyl group and have a high boiling point, e.g. B. one that is higher than. about 230, it being possible for the hydroxyl groups to be partially etherified.
For example, aliphatic alcohols, such as diethylene glycol, triethylene glycol or 1,5-pentanediol, can be used as solvents for the present process. Particularly good results are achieved if glycerine is used as a solvent.
For the present process, for example, the following o-diamines of the benzene series, of which one amino group is primary and the other amino group is at most secondary, can be used: 4-methyl-1,2-diamino-benzene, 1-methoxy-3,4-di - Amino-benzene, isopropyl-o-phenylenediamine or 1-amino-2-monomethylamino-benzene. Preferably, o-phenylenediamine is used.
As dehydrating agents, u. a. Boric acid, pyrophosphoric acid, zinc chloride, tin tetra- chlozide or, in particular, mixtures of these compounds, eg. B. Mixtures of 1 to 2 parts of boric acid and 1 part of zinc chloride or 2 parts of pyrophosphoric acid and 1 part of boric acid are suitable. Of the dehydrating agents. you need in all common amounts of about 0.5 to 5 Oh, based on the starting materials.
In the present process, 4 moles of water have to be split off to form 1 mole of the 2,5-di- [benzimidazyl- (2 ')] -furan compound of the formula (1). It is recommended that the water is split off with the exclusion of oxygen (air), e.g. B. in a vacuum, or advantageously in an inert gas atmosphere, for example under nitrogen.
The elimination of water can take place by gradually heating the reaction mixture to temperatures of up to about 220 to 240.
You can z. B. proceed so that a mixture of furan-2,5-dicarboxylic acid and o-diamine or the addition salt prepared from 1 mole of furan-2,5-dicarboxylic acid and 2 moles of o-diamine in a solvent of the type specified, especially in glycerine, under nitrogen in the presence of boric acid and zinc chloride initially to about 130 to. 150 and then heated to about 175 to 185, and then the reaction gradually comes to an end at about 220 to 240.
The escaping water can be separated in a water separator so that the course or the end of the reaction can be easily checked.
The 2,5-di- [benzimidazyl- (2 ')] - furans formed can now be obtained from the reaction mixture by customary methods known per se. A favorable work-up method is that after separation of the calculated amount of water, the still hot reaction mixture is stirred into a dilute mineral acid, eg. B. hydrochloric acid or sulfuric acid, pours and separates the precipitated salts by filtration. With the help of alkalis, e.g. B. alkali carbonates or in particular ammonia, the base can then be released from the salt.
The 2,5-di- [benzimidazyl- (2 ')] - furans of the formula (1) can be used as optical brighteners for a wide variety of materials, e.g. B. cellulose fibers, such as cotton or rayon, made of regenerated cellulose, semi or fully synthetic fibers such as acetate silk or polyamide fibers, can be used. These dibenzimidazylfurans have proven to be particularly valuable when used on polyacrylonitrile fibers. The lightening effect achieved in this way proves to be very lightfast.
In the following examples, unless otherwise noted, the parts are parts by weight and the temperatures are, as in the preceding description, given in degrees Celsius.

<tb> 250 <SEP> parts <SEP> diethylene glycol monoethyl ether, after displacement of the air, heated under nitrogen.
A green solution is obtained, from which water of reaction and solvent distill into the water separator at 150.degree. The mixture is heated to 200 ° C., the golden brown solution is stirred for 4 hours at 200 to 225 ° C. and, after cooling to 200 ° C., 150 parts of diethylene glycol monoethyl ether are added, 500 parts of water and 60 parts of concentrated hydrochloric acid are allowed to flow in at 100 ° C. and the mixture is stirred for 1 hour at 75 to 85 C.
The mixture is left to cool to room temperature (18 to 20), the yellow monohydrochloride is filtered off with suction and washed three times with 200 parts of water.
The yellow crystals are suspended in 750 parts of water, heated to 60 ° C. and treated with 70 to 80 parts of ammonia until an alkaline reaction occurs. Then the mixture is 1 hour at 50 to. Stirred at 60 C and then cooled. The crystals are sucked off, washed with water and dried in a vacuum drying cabinet at 80 to 90.
The yield of 2,5-di- [benzimidazyl- (2 ')] - furan is about 124.9 parts. Melting point: 288 to 290 C.
<I> Example 6 </I> 39 parts of furan-2,5-dicarboxylic acid, 54 parts of o-phenylenediamine and 1.5 parts of boric acid are added in the course of 250 parts of diethylene glycol diethyl ether with exclusion of air heated to 180 C for 2 hours and stirred at 180 to 185 C for 20 hours,
the water formed during the reaction is continuously distilled off. The green-yellow suspension is then stirred for a further 3 hours at 190 to 195 ° C., about half of the diethylene glycol diethyl ether being distilled off. After cooling to about 110 ° C., a hot solution of 20 parts of sulfuric acid in 1000 parts of water is added to the light green reaction mixture and the mixture is slowly cooled to about 10 ° C.
The free base is prepared according to the instructions in Example 1, about 53.9 parts of 2,5-di- [benzimidazolyl- (2 ')] - furan being obtained in the form of a pale yellow powder. Melting point: 291 to 293 <B> 0 </B> C.
If, instead of the 250 parts of diethylene glycol diethyl ether, 200 parts of glycol dibutyl ether are used, the reaction is carried out for 51 / $ hours at 195 to 205 ° C., around half of the glycol dibutyl ether being distilled off in addition to water, and heated after adding 200 Parts of glycerol for 2 hours from 205 to 215 C, about 53 parts of 2,5-di- [benzimidazolyl- (2 ')] - furan with a melting point of 292 to 294 C are obtained
