Auxiliary device with movable stopper for a machine tool The present invention relates to an auxiliary device with movable stopper for a machine tool comprising a workpiece holder or a tool holder moving with respect to one another at the same time. during a machining operation.
Often in such machine tools the movement of the tool towards the workpiece is controlled by hand. In this case, and when the tool is made of an extremely hard material such as, for example, diamond, the worker who controls the machine does not have any reference point allowing him to adjust suitably the speed of penetration of the tool into the workpiece. It often happens that it moves the tool too quickly, which breaks it.
In other cases, too much caution leads to an increase in the duration of the operation. This drawback arises in the use of different types of machine tools such as, for example, drills, milling machines, lathes, chainsaws, etc.
On the other hand, machine tools are known in which the feed of the tool is regulated by automatic control units generally of the hydraulic or pneumatic type, but these are special machines or large machines. dimensions which can only be rationally used to effect large series.
The devices for adjusting the feed rate of the tool when they are of the hydraulic type generally include a pump and a motor, they cannot normally be adapted to an existing machine, such as a machine. hand operated.
The aim of the present invention is to remedy these drawbacks.
For this, the device according to the invention comprises a body intended to be fixed to a part of the machine integral with one of the elements: part-piece or tool holder, a movable stop member guided by the body and capable of move relative to the body between two extreme positions under the effect of an external force,
and a brake housed inside the body and capable of limiting the speed of movement of the stop member to a maximum value, at least approximately independent of said force.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the device according to the invention. Fig. 1 is seen, in axial section.
Fig. 2, a sectional view along the line II-II of FIG. 1, and fig. 3, a side elevational view on a smaller scale, the device being attached to one of the supports of a drill press.
The device shown in the drawing comprises a body consisting of three parts 1, 2 and 3, fixed to one another by screws. The part 1 is generally cylindrical in shape and has two cylindrical housings 4 and 5 located in the extension of one another, of parallel axes and of different diameters. Housing 4, of smaller diameter,
extends from the upper part of the part 1 to the bottom of the housing 5 which, for its part,: extends to the lower end of this part. The housings 4 and 5 constitute chambers containing a fluid such as oil, the upper chamber 4 and the lower chamber 5 being separated. by a valve 6, the body 7 of which is driven into the lower part of the chamber 4.
This valve 6 comprises a plate 8 biased by a spring 9 resting against a disc 10. The disc 10 and the bottom of the body 7 have openings 11.
The plate 8 moves against the action of the spring 9 when the pressure in the chamber 5 is greater than that which prevails in the chamber 4, thus allowing the passage of the fluid from the lower chamber to the upper chamber. These two chambers are also joined by a channel 12 formed by perforations made in the part 1.
This channel extends from the lower end of the chamber 4 to the upper part of the chamber 5. In part of this channel, parallel to the axis of the part 1, a nozzle 13 is driven out. On the other hand, this part of the channel can be closed by a needle 14 screwed into the part 1 and having at its end located outside this part a knurled button 15.
The needle 14 has at its upper end a conical point 16 which extends opposite the end of the nozzle 13. It therefore makes it possible to adjust the dimensions of the outlet opening of the nozzle at will.
A piston 17 sliding in the lower chamber 5 is biased by a spring 18 which bears against the part 2, the latter forming a cover closing the lower end of the chamber 5.
The piston. 17 .Includes tightly .between discs 19 and 20, a seal 21 of the usual type such, for example, as a Gaco sleeve (as registered).
Finally, in the chamber 4 also slides a stop member 22 comprising a piston and formed of a cylindrical rod 23 having at its lower end a flange 24 and a sealing gasket 25 held in place by a disc 26. The seal 25 is of the same type as the seal 21.
It has an annular lip directed downwards and the lower portion of which is cut to a frustoconical shape so that this lining has a frustoconical facet 27 with an opening facing upwards. The angle of this facet is of the order of 15o.
As seen in fig. 1, the stop member 22 which is held in place by the sleeve 3 fixed to the body 1 can slide inside the chamber 4 by discharging the fluid contained in this chamber through the channel 12 and the nozzle 13 and by thus moving the piston 17 downwards against the action of the res out 18.
The rod 23 forms a movable stop whose extremity LZupémieume extends outside the body. 1, 2, 3. The entire device is sealed by the gaskets 25 and 21 as well as by an O-ring 28 surrounding the needle 14.
A cylindrical housing 29 (fig. 2) communicating with the chamber 5 via an opening 30 is also made in the wall of the body 1 at the upper part of the chamber 5.
The housing 29 is occupied by a valve whose body 31, driven into the housing 29, contains a ball 32 urged by a spring 33 and pressing an O-ring 34 against a cover 35 pierced with a plain opening 36. This valve allows filling. of bedrooms 4 and 5.
The quantity of oil introduced into the body 1 determines the position of the piston 17 when the member 22 is in its upper position. An absolute limit to the movement of the piston 17 is formed by an opening 37 made in the side wall of the body 1 below the valve (31-36). In fact, when the gasket 21 of the piston 17 reaches the opening 37, the oil escapes freely to the outside.
This opening allows the device to continue to operate under constant conditions even if the oil contained in the chambers 4 and 5 heats up during service. The opening 37 also acts as a trap when filling chambers 4 and 5.
The operation of the device described results immediately from its construction. When the stop member 22 is pressed to push it into chamber 4, the oil flows through nozzle 13 into chamber 5. When the stop member is released, the oil is pumped out in the chamber 4 under the action of res out 18 after having caused an opening of the valve 6. The needle 14 makes it possible to regulate in a precise manner, the resistance to the flow of the fluid passing through the channel 12.
It is known that the resistance of a fluid to flow depends on the speed of this fluid and increases with this speed.
By applying a given force to the stop member 22, the speed of movement of the piston inside the chamber 4 therefore very quickly reaches a constant value. Moreover, since the coefficient of resistance can take an extremely high value if the passage opening is very small, the limiting speed of the piston 22 in fact varies very little regardless of the force applied. Fig. 3 shows the use of the device on a hand drill.
This: the latter comprises a fixed table 38 on which is fixed a part 39 and a drilling head 40 carried by a column 41. The drilling head 40 and the base 38 form a fixed support during the drilling operation. The head 40 also carries a support 42 for a spindle 43 driven by a motor 44 and carrying a wick 45.
The support 42 is movable and has a rack 46 which makes it possible to move it by hand by means of a lever 47 and a pinion 48. As seen in FIG. 3, the movable support 42 furthermore carries a lateral arm 49 which extends forwards and the body 1 of the device described is fixed to the head 40 below this arm.
This fixing can be achieved, for example, by a bracket screwed onto the head 40 and having an internal thread in which the body 1 is engaged, the latter being threaded. The position of the device with respect to the arm 49 can thus be adjusted so that this arm reaches the upper end of the stop member 22 when the bit 45 touches the workpiece. From this moment, the movement of the part 45 comes up against the resistance exerted on the member 22 during movement.
The speed of this movement is limited to a practically fixed value, which can be adjusted within certain limits by means of the needle 14.
The movement of the spindle support 42 downwards can be limited in an absolute manner by another fixed stop (not shown). When the lever 47 has brought the support 42 into this lower limit position, the member 22 reaches its downward position.
The lever 47 is then returned to its starting position shown in the drawing, which frees said member 22. The oil from chamber 4 which has entered chamber 5 is automatically discharged into chamber 4 by means of the valve. 6, which returns the stop member 22 to its starting position.
The device described could be mounted in the same way, for example, on a movable workpiece carriage under the action of a lever, on a milling machine or lathe bed, in particular when the tools used are diamond tools.
In fact, for certain rework milling, diamond tools are readily used. The feed rate must not exceed the tolerable limit for such tools. The device described could also be used on machines in which the advance of the tool is caused by a motor device,
but where the possibilities of adjusting this advance are lacking or insufficient.
The main advantage that it presents is that it constitutes a fully autonomous device capable of being mounted on any machine tool. Thanks to the needle 14, the limit speed can be adjusted very precisely and finally,
the valve 6 as well as the spring 18 will ensure an immediate return of the piston 22 from the lower position to the upper position.
Indeed, as the diameter of the chamber 5 is greater than that of the chamber 4, the force exerted on the stop member 22 easily causes the displacement of the piston 17 even if this force is of the same order as the resistance of the spring 18. .
In fact, it suffices for the spring 18 to have sufficient resistance to ensure the opening of the valve 6 and the displacement of the piston 17 and the stop member 22.
The device could also be executed differently from what is described above. Thus, in particular, the channel 12 could comprise two radial perforations passing through the wall of the body 1, located at the same height but offset angularly and communicating one with the chamber 4 and the other with the chamber 5.
The adjusting member, instead of being constituted by the needle 14, would then be constituted by a knurled ring fitted in a sealed manner on the body 1 at the height of said perforations.
A groove made in the internal face of said ring and extending over a certain arc would then establish communication between the two perforations. This groove could have a depth varying continuously from one of its ends to the other,
which would make it possible to adjust the section of passage of the fluid in the channel 12 to the desired value by rotation of the ring on the body 1. Such an arrangement would make it possible to obtain a very progressive adjustment of the flow speed of the fluid from bedroom 4 to bedroom 5.
