Description
Universal joint The object of the present invention is a universal joint intended to connect two shafts driven in rotation and the intersecting axes of which form an angle with respect to each other.
The present invention aims to provide a universal joint which has the advantage of being able to transmit a rotational movement at a much higher speed than universal joints of the cardan type in which a cross with two pairs of journals connects the two rotating parts. This universal joint also has the advantage of being capable of being mass produced at a low cost price. Such seals are used in particular in the machine tool industry for driving spindles for drilling, milling, grinding, etc.
The universal joint which is the subject of the invention is characterized in that one of its shafts ends in a spherical part pivoting in a housing formed in the end of the other shaft, the torque being transmitted by the at least one ball housed partially in the spherical part of the male shaft and partially in the wall of the housing of this spherical part.
The accompanying drawing shows by way of example two embodiments of the seal. Fig. 1 is a view comprising a partial section of the first embodiment of a universal joint of which the race min of the balls is provided in the spherical part of the male shaft.
Fig. 2 is a section along line A-A. Fig. 3 is a view comprising a partial section of a universal joint according to a second embodiment of which the ball raceway is provided in the wall of the female shaft. Figs. 1 and 2 show a first embodiment of the seal. This seal comprises a shaft 1 ending in a spherical part 2 fitted in the housing 3 of the shaft 4. A spring coil 5 placed in a groove of the housing 3 prevents the spherical part 2 from coming out of its housing 3.
A ball 6, the geometric center of which is placed in a plane perpendicular to the axis of the shaft 4 and passing through the geometric center of the spherical part 2, is partially housed in a socket made in the spherical part 2 and partially in a hole drilled in the wall of the housing 3. The function of this ball is to transmit the torque between the two shafts 1 and 4.
A single ball has been shown for the purpose of making this drawing easier to understand, but it is possible to place several balls in the same plane and on the same circumference of the spherical part. A force-fitted socket 7 prevents the ball 6 from coming out of its housing.
Figs. 3 and 4 show a second embodiment in which the balls 6 are housed partially in holes drilled in the spherical part 2, the axes of these holes being placed in a plane perpendicular to the axis of the shaft 1, and partly in grooves provided in the wall of the housing 3. A bush 8 force-fitted, on the one hand, maintains the balls 6 in their housing and, on the other hand, prevents the spherical part 2 from get out of their accommodation 3.
