Ferrous metal piston with piston ring The present invention relates to a piston with at least one piston ring lying in a circumferential groove. In order to reduce wear, especially on diesel engines, chrome alloy inserts and chrome coatings have been proposed on certain surfaces, namely on the head side of the cylinder, on the exchangeable cylinder liner, on the outer surface of the piston rings and even on the side surfaces of the Piston rings.
The above-mentioned attempted constructive solutions were unsatisfactory in that the ring grooves were worn quite heavily, - especially on the side surface on which the pressure as a result of the explosions in the cylinder acts. Such wear increases the lateral play between the ring and the groove and often causes the piston ring to break, which leads to loss of line, scoring of the cylinder walls and the like.
According to the invention, at least one of the side surfaces of the groove is provided with a hard coating. This coating should preferably not require any subsequent heat treatment of the piston, as is the case with certain sprayed-on hard coatings.
In the accompanying drawing, an exemplary embodiment of the subject matter of the invention is shown on a greatly enlarged scale in the vertical. Section shown # t.
In the drawing, 10 designates the piston body, which consists of a ferrous metal and has a cylindrical circumferential surface 11 and two circumferential grooves 12 in which each > a resilient piston ring 13 lies. Each groove 12 has the known parallel side surfaces 14 and 15 and a bottom surface 16. </ B > The upper side surface 14 of each groove is the one closest to the piston head 17 .
The rings 13 seal the ring-shaped space between the piston surface 11 and the cylinder bore 18 of the engine block in a known manner 19 . To reduce wear, an electrolytically applied chrome coating 20 is now provided at least on the lower side surface 15 of one or both annular grooves 12. In the present example, the upper groove 12 has this hard covering only on the lower side surface 15, while the lower groove has the hard covering 20 on both side surfaces 14 and 15.
The thickness of the chrome coating 20 is reduced at the end part of the groove so that the normal wear of the lining caused by the friction of the piston ring 13 does not result in burrs that possibly cause a. Ring breakage.
In addition, the outer edge of the chrome lining 20 is beveled or broken so that when the piston is used in an internal combustion engine with a chrome-plated cylinder bore, no direct contact with the chrome linings of the groove and the cylinder bore can occur.
The hard covering 20 has a thickness of 0.075 to 0.25 mm. Whether the bottom surface 16 of the groove 12 is one has such a coating or not is not essential.
The material composition of the piston rings can vary within wide limits - as well as a hard coating on the ring - it may or may not be present. For example, the ring 13 can consist of ordinary, hard cast iron or steel, or it can contain alloy additives, such as e.g. B.
Nickel or chromium or a hard coating made of ceramic "material" to make the ring corrosion-resistant and abrasion-resistant. The hardness of the running surface. Should be over 40 Rockwell degrees "which is due to a suitable material composition and subsequent Remuneration is achieved. A main advantage of the piston described lies in the fact that the chrome coating 20 is on the piston body and not on the ring.
It has been found that the hard and brittle chrome coating on the rings impairs their elasticity so that they cannot be expanded and slipped over for assembly on the piston, or they will break. Even if it is possible to fit such a ring, its service life in the heavily used diesel engines is usually short.
In addition, the chrome coating 20 can be used to restore worn annular grooves to their original dimensions and surface quality. Such a lining cannot become loose during operation, nor can it hinder the heat transfer from the piston to the rings and therefore to the cylinder walls, as is the case with loose metal inserts that are not connected to the piston. the case is. In addition, it does not significantly reduce the width of the grooves 12 into which the piston ring 13 has to fit, so that the usable cross-section and thus the speed of the ring are not reduced.
Solid The production of the chrome coating is based on an electrolytic, metallization process. It may be necessary to apply primer coatings made of copper, nickel or non-ferrous metals in order to increase the adhesion of the hard, smooth or porous chrome coating.
