<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

Apparatus intended for displaying indications in a window of a housing The object of the present invention is an apparatus intended for displaying indications in a window of a housing and comprising, housed in this housing, a prismatic drum. axis parallel to the plane of said window, capable of being driven in step-by-step rotation about said axis relative to a support on which it is pivoted, said drum being able to bear said indications on its faces.
Devices of this type are already known. In general, the indications that the drum is intended to bear appear on planar elements which are fixed to the drum and constitute its faces parallel to the axis. These elements can be shutters bearing indications such as, for example, the days of the week or the names of the months, when the drums on which they are mounted are incorporated into mechanical calendars. They may also, in certain devices intended for advertising, consist of panels carrying an advertisement. In the case of viewers, these flat elements consist of slide clichés, intended to be made visible by a lamp placed in the drum.
In known devices of the type mentioned, the position of the axis of the drum is fixed relative to the housing. There must then remain a certain clearance between the edge of the window and the cylinder circumscribed to the prism which forms the outer contour of the drum, so that the edges of this prism cannot in any case strike the edge of the window during the rotation. of the drum. In these devices, the panels, shutters or stereotypes of the drum, which carry indications, can therefore not be pressed against the window of the device.
The aim of the present invention is to remedy this drawback by creating an apparatus in which the drum can, when one of its side faces is facing the window, rest against the edge of the latter. , so that the periphery of said lateral face is completely pressed against the edge of said window. For this, in the apparatus according to the invention, said support is movable relative to the housing, between a first position in which one of its faces is pressed against said window and a second position in which the drum is able to turn.
An embodiment of the apparatus according to the invention is shown, by way of example, in the accompanying drawing, of which FIG. 1 is an end view thereof, the housing being cut away; 'fig. 2 is an elevational view from behind, the housing also being cut away and some parts broken away, and, FIG. 3 a diagram showing the operation.
The apparatus shown in the drawing is a slide viewer. It comprises a housing 1, in the form of a rectangular parallelepiped, in a vertical wall 2 of which is pierced a window 3, rectangular. In this housing 1 is housed a drum 4 having the shape of a hexagonal prism whose axis is parallel to the wall 2 and is located at the height of the middle of the window 3. This drum 4 is delimited by two end walls 5 and 6, hexagonal, the vertices of which are connected two by two by bars 7 parallel to the axis of the drum. The drum could also be composed of a single end piece of support having a hub and radial arms.
The bars 7 would then be fixed by only one of their ends to these arms. The wall 5 is rigidly mounted on a shaft 8 coaxial with the drum 4. As for the wall 6, it has a central opening in which a sleeve is freely engaged.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
fixed 9, integral with an upright 10 and serving as a bearing for the shaft 8. Another upright 11 parallel to the first carries, at its upper end, a second bearing which serves, with the sleeve 9, to pivot the shaft 8 .
The drum 4 can be driven in rotation by a small electric motor 12, entirely housed inside the drum 4. This motor is fixed on a side arm 13 which extends inside the drum 4, from the end. of the sleeve 9. The rotor of the motor 12 carries a pinion 15 which is engaged with a reduction gear train intended to drive the drum 4. This train comprises a first mobile 14, mounted idle on the shaft 8 and whose wheel is engaged with pinion 15, a second mobile 16, pivoted on a journal fixed to the base of the motor 12, and a wheel 17 coaxial with the shaft 8 and coupled to the latter by means of a plate 18 pressed against it by a spring 19.
Two cams 20, 21, mounted on the shaft 8 and rotating with the latter, are housed between the wall 5 of the drum 4 and the upright 11. The role of these cams will be explained below.
The sleeve 9 carries, besides the side arm 13, a second arm 22 which extends in the direction of the wall 2 and at the end of which are fixed a reflector 23 and a tubular bulb 24. Between the bars 7, it is possible to fix shots 25, of rectangular shape, which each form one of the side walls of the drum 4 and whose outer face is exactly flush with the edges of each of the walls 5 and 6. The six sides of the walls 5, 6 are slightly longer than the height of the window 3. On the other hand, the length of the bars 7, that is to say the distance between the walls 5 and 6, is also slightly greater than the length of the window 3. Thus, each images 25 can close exactly this window.
The uprights 10 and 11, which form the support of the drum 4, are carried by a fixed bracket 26, secured to the bottom of the housing 1. For this, they each have a journal 27 engaged in a corresponding opening of the bracket 26. journals 27 are coaxial, so that the uprights 10 and 11 can pivot about said common axis. In addition, two springs 28 each fixed by one of their ends to one of the uprights 10, 11, and by the other to the bracket 26, constantly tend to cause the uprights 10 and 11 to pivot in the direction of the wall 2 Thus, the drum 4 is constantly pressed against this wall 2.
When it is in a position such that one of the plates 25 is parallel to the window 3, the perimeter of this plate, as well as the corresponding sides of the walls 5 and 6, press over their entire length against the edge of the window 3. The cliché made visible by switching on the lamp 24 is therefore pressed exactly against this window, so that there is no visible gap between the cliché 25 and the wall 2 around the window 3.
When the drum 4 is driven in rotation, the uprights 10 and 11 tilt around the journals 27, against the action of the springs 28 while the apex between the visible image and the next one of each of the walls 5 and 6 slides against one of the side edges of window 3. To facilitate sliding, all these vertices are rounded. Rotating rollers could naturally be mounted in the vicinity of these vertices, for example on a bearing surface of the bars 7, projecting from one of the external faces of the walls 5 or 6 or of the star-shaped support, in the case where the drum is composed from one extreme support.
The uprights 10 and 11 return to their normal, vertical position when the drum 4 has reached a position such that the next shot 25 is exactly in front of the window 3.
Various electrical control circuits make it possible to operate the viewer described in a simple manner. By a short press on a push-button 29, it is possible to send a current pulse in an electromagnet 30 whose armature 31 is normally engaged in front of the end of one of the bars 7 and blocks the drum 4. This armature 31, drawn down, releases the drum 4. In addition, it momentarily closes a contact 32 interposed in a line 33 which supplies the motor 12. The latter then starts up and drives the drum 4.
The cam 21, mounted on the shaft 8, has six notches 34 regularly distributed around its periphery. Two superimposed contacts, 35 and 36, are controlled by a vertical rod 37 which is normally engaged in one of the notches 34. As soon as the cam 21 begins to rotate, the rod 37, pushed out of the notch 34, closes the valve. contact 36, which is connected in parallel with contact 32 in line 33, so that the motor continues to be supplied, even when the push-button 29 is released. The motor 12 thus drives the drum 4 until that a new image 25 is in front of the window 3. The drum 4 is then blocked by the armature 31 which returns to its normal position as soon as the electromagnet 30 ceases to be excited and which serves as a stop for the next bar 7.
A new notch 34 of the cam 21 arrives at this moment under the rod 37 and the motor 12 ceases to be supplied, since the contact 36 opens. The motor is braked by the friction clutch (18, 19) and stops after a few revolutions.
The contact 35, which is connected in a line 38 supplying the lamp 24, is on the contrary open when the rod 37 is outside the notches 34, and closed when the said rod is in one of the said notches. Thus the lamp 24 is only lit when a photograph 25 is visible in window 3.
It is therefore sufficient to exert a short pressure on the button 29 to bring up a new image in said window. In addition, the drum 4 can be brought back at will to a given initial position, corresponding to the appearance of a first image 25 in the window 3. For this, it suffices to momentarily press a push-button 39. A relay 40, which has two contacts 41, 42, is then
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
excited, and these contacts 41, 42 close. The contact 42 is in series with the coil of the relay 40 and with a contact 43, controlled by a rod 44 and a notch 45 that the cam 20 has at a point on its periphery.
If the drum 4 is in a position away from its initial position, the rod 44 is out of the notch 45 and the contact 43 is closed, so that the closing of the contact 42 keeps the relay 40 energized until the drum 4 approaches its initial position. When the contact 41 of the relay 40, it is connected in parallel with the contact 29, so that its closing energizes the coil 30. The stop 31 is erased and the motor 12 starts up, since the contact 32 is closed by coil 30. It is kept running as long as relay 40 is energized. The pictures scroll continuously without stopping, in front of window 3 until the first is visible.
The position of the notch 45 and its dimensions are determined such that the rod 44 falls into this notch a little before the notch 34 corresponding to the first shot reaches under the rod 37. At the moment when the rod 44 falls in. notch 45, contact 43 opens and cuts the holding circuit of relay 40. Contact 41 therefore also opens and interrupts the power supply circuit of relay 30. Consequently, contact 32 opens and the stop 31 returns to its blocking position of the drum 4 a little before the drum 4 returns to its initial position. When it succeeds, it abuts against the stop 31 and stops instantly. At the same time, the rod 37 falls into the first notch 34 and the contact 36 opens, interrupting the supply circuit of the motor 12.
The device is then ready to start a new cycle of presentation of the images 25, following a closing of the contact 29.
It is obvious that the pushbuttons 29 and 39 could be replaced, in a variant, by contactors or relays, controlled by any control device, for example as described in patent No. 368943, the pushbuttons. evenings 29 and 39 then being respectively the contactors 28 and 32 of said patent.
In another variant, the drum 4 could also carry, instead of stereotypes 25, opaque panels presenting either texts or advertising illustrations.
Finally, in another embodiment, the drum 4 could be constructed so as to carry, between the bars 7, hollow elements such, for example, as cases in which small objects intended to be fixed could be fixed. presented successively in window 3.
