Process for reducing foam formation in solutions which contain nonionic surface-active compounds It is known that nonionic surface-active substances tend to foam considerably less than anion-active surface-active compounds. For many technical processes in which foam formation is undesirable, however, even the non-ionic surface-active substances can only be used with difficulty or not at all, since the foam development in aqueous solution is still too strong, especially with strong bath movement.
Attempts have therefore already been made to use medium monohydric alcohols, in particular branched alcohols, such as. B. tertiary amyl alcohols or octyl alcohols to be used, which have also proven to be suitable in other cases. In the present case, however, the results are unsatisfactory.
It has now been found that, surprisingly, alcohols with a chain length of at least 18 carbon atoms have a specific antifoam effect with respect to nonionic surface-active substances. To reduce foam formation in solutions containing nonionic surface-active compounds, both saturated and unsaturated alcohols containing at least 18 carbon atoms are suitable.
Examples of such alcohols are: stearyl alcohol, nonadecyl alcohol, arachyl alcohol, henecosyl alcohol, behen alcohol, elaidyl alcohol, eicosenyl alcohol, erucyl alcohol and oleyl alcohol. The latter has proven to be a particularly suitable anti-foam agent in many cases.
The antifoam agents can be added to the solutions containing the nonionic surface-active substances in the usual manner in the dissolved state or in emulsion form. Particularly suitable solvents are: methyl alcohol, ethyl alcohol, isopropyl alcohol, glycol, ethyl glycol, diethyl glycol and similar compounds.
The concentration of these solutions can fluctuate within considerable limits and is expediently between 5 and 50%. The solutions containing the antifoam agent are expediently added to the solutions containing the nonionic surface-active compounds at the start of foam formation.
In some cases it is also expedient to add small amounts of a nonionic emulsifier to the solutions which contain the antifoam agent. But you can also, which may be desirable in some cases, dissolve the antifoam agents in the nonionic surface-active compounds (usually with heating) and either use this mixture alone or add it to the components which are to be used together with the non-ionic surface-active compounds .
The components which are used together with the nonionic surface-active compounds can be alkaline, neutral or acidic substances. In addition to alkalis and acids - here preferably phosphoric acid - particularly salts such as sodium carbonate, potassium carbonate, sodium bicarbonate, alkali phosphates, alkali salts of anhydrous phosphates such as hexametaphosphate, pyrophosphates, tripolyphosphates, and also sodium bisulfate, sodium sulfate and similar compounds can be used.
The non-ionic wetting agents, to list only the most important forms of application, can be used, for example, in alkaline metal degreasing agents, acidic metal treatment agents, bottle cleaning agents and dishwashing agents, textile treatment agents and electrolytic baths. The amount of antifoam which is required to produce a sufficient effect is about 0.05 to 0.5 part by weight based on 1 part by weight of wetting agent.
Since the nonionic surface-active compounds are generally used in 0.05 to 2% solutions, the amount of antifoam required is reduced in a corresponding manner, based on the respective solution.
The effectiveness of the monohydric alcohols having at least 18 carbon atoms, in particular of oleyl alcohol, in comparison with other lower alcohols or antifoams can be seen from the comparison tests listed in the tables below. Various nonionic surface-active compounds, each of which are indicated as wetting agents, were used.
In the tests listed in Tables 1 to 4, a 1% solution of an alkaline agent of the following composition was injected at 80 (in Table 4 at 60): 75 parts of water glass 10 parts of sodium tripolyphosphate 15 parts of soda 1.5 parts of 0.5 parts wetting agent Parts of antifoam agent The tables show the amount of foam after a certain period of time with the addition of various antifoam agents or even without an antifoam agent. In order to obtain easily reproducible values, all tests were carried out in a spraying machine with a capacity of 10 liters. The solution was injected into glass containers (bottles) from which it could easily flow back into a collecting container.
The difference between the height of the solution in the collecting container at rest and without foam and the edge of the container (about 55 mm) was divided into 30 units. With the help of a pump, the solution was fed back from the container of the spraying device during the implementation of the experiments, making continuous spraying of any length possible. The tests were then stopped when the foam had reached the edge of the container, that is to say unit 30. When assessing the foam height, it must be taken into account that considerable amounts of liquid go into the foam and the solution in the container is reduced accordingly.
To reach the edge of the container, a larger amount of foam is required than the difference between the solution at rest and the volume up to the edge of the container.
In the experiments in Tables 1-3, the antifoam agent was added to the wetting agent from the outset, while in experiment 4 a 5% (10 cm3) alcoholic solution was added to the bath surface at the start of spraying.
Tables 5 and 6 show the results obtained with a solution that contained only 0.015% wetting agent and 0.05 11 / a anti-foaming agent. It was sprayed at different temperatures, which are given in each case. In experiment 2, the spraying took place with one nozzle, while in the remaining experiments 4 nozzles were used.
