Man mischt den Dampf des Aminoesters, vorzugs weise mit einer gewissen Menge Wasserdampf, da auf diese Weise der Reiaktionsverlauf verbessert wird. Der Anteil an Wasserdampf kann :bis zu 70 % betra gen und liegt vorzugsweise zwischen 30 Gew.a/o und 60 Gew.o;
o-, bezogen auf den Aminoester. In der obigen Formel bedeutet R1 wie gesagt einen gegebenenfalls substituierten Polymethylenrest mit 3-6 C-#Atomen;

Process for the production of Laetams It is known that esters and amines can react with one another, for example when heated, to form amides. If this reaction occurs, compounds with two or more ester or amine groups in their molecules give rise to the formation of products which are mostly polymeric in nature.
It has now been found that esters of amino acids of the formula NH.-R1. CO. ORz where R1 is a polymethylene radical with 3-6 carbon atoms, which can carry substituents, and RI, an alkyl or cycloalkyl radical, can be easily converted into the corresponding lactams,
by heating the amino esters to a temperature of 250-300.degree. C. in the vapor phase, and preferably in the presence of a catalyst and / or steam that promotes the elimination of alcohols.
The heating can preferably take place by passing the vapors of the amino ester through a vessel containing the catalyst and heated to the desired temperature. The amino ester, däanp e can have any pressure,
usually atmospheric pressure and can, if desired, with an inert gas, e.g. B. nitrogen be diluted. The most favorable pressure and degree of dilution depend on the volatility of the amino ester used.
The steam of the amino ester is mixed, preferably with a certain amount of water vapor, since the course of the reaction is improved in this way. The proportion of water vapor can be: up to 70% and is preferably between 30% by weight and 60% by weight;
o- based on the amino ester. In the above formula, as stated, R1 denotes an optionally substituted polymethylene radical having 3-6 carbon atoms;
It is therefore the esters of co-aminnobutyric acid, co-aminovaleric acid, co-aminocaproic acid and w-aminooenanthic acid and their substitution products, e.g. B.: the methyl -, - ethyl, isopropyl and cyclohexyl esters.
iThese amines can be produced by catalytic hydrogenation of cyano esters according to the information in Swiss patent no. 361292 or by esterification of the corresponding amino acids.
Particularly suitable catalysts which promote the splitting off of alcohols are aluminum oxide or silicon dioxide gel.
The lactams produced by this process are used as intermediates for the chemical Syn thesis, for. B. for the production of polyamides, valuable.
The process according to the invention is particularly suitable for the production of caprolactam from esters of a) -aminocaproic acid. _ In the following examples the parts and the percentages are given by weight.
Example 1 70 parts of an aqueous solution containing 66 μl / a of isopropyl-co- # aminocaproate are evaporated at a rate of 1.2 parts per minute and the steam is carried over 60 parts of activated aluminum oxide a mesh count of 1.575 to 3.15 per cm,
which has a temperature of 250-275 C. Under these conditions, the molar ratio of amino ester to water is 1: 5, while the contact time is about 5 seconds.
After the reaction vapors have passed through, they are condensed by cooling and the condensed product is then fractionally distilled under reduced pressure. 27 parts of caprolactam are obtained (boiling point 132 to 134 ° C. with 9 mm of mercury).
The yield is 90% of theory.
Example 2 69.8 parts of an aqueous solution containing 66% isopropyl - (,) - aminocaproate are evaporated at a rate of 0.8 parts per minute and the steam over 80 parts of Raschig rings of 0 ,
32 cm diameter at a temperature between 250 and 275 C. Under these conditions the molar ratio of amino ester to water is 1: 5 and the contact time is approximately 7 seconds.
After passing through the Rasohigringa, the vapors are condensed by cooling and the condensed product is then fractionally distilled under reduced pressure.
This gives 5 parts of caprolactam (boiling point 132-134 ° C., at 9 mm Hg) together with 32 parts of isopropyl-c -aminocaproate. The caprolactam yield is 17% of theory. Example 3 33 parts of isopropyl (i)
-aminocaproate are evaporated at a rate of 1.7 parts per minute and the steam passed over 30 parts of activated aluminum oxide of 1.575-3.15 meshes per cm at a temperature of 250-275 C. Under these conditions the contact time is 7 seconds.
After passing over the aluminum oxide, the vapors are condensed by cooling and the condensed product is then fractionally distilled under reduced pressure. This gives 14 parts of caprolactam (boiling point 132-134 C at 9 mm Hg)
and 8 parts of isopropyl-o- # aminocaproate. The caprolactam yield is 65%. the theory.
Example 4 59.6 parts of an aqueous solution containing 68 II / o sec. Butyl-a.) - aminocaproate, are evaporated at a rate of 1.2 parts per minute and the steam is passed over 60 parts of activated aluminum oxide of 1.575-3.15 meshes per cm at a temperature of 250-275 C.
Under these conditions the molar ratio of amino ester to water is 1: 5 and the contact time is about 5 seconds. After passing through aluminum oxide, the vapors are condensed by cooling and the condensed product is then fractionated under reduced pressure: distilled.
10 parts of caprolactam (boiling point 132-134 ° C. at 9 man Hg) are obtained in this way along with 15 parts of sec-butyl-to-aminocaproate. The yield of caprolaetam: is 41 / o of theory.
