Process for the production of high molecular weight linear polyesters It is known to produce polyesters from diols and aromatic dicarboxylic acid esters by reacting diols with esters of dicarboxylic acids and monohydric alcohols in the presence of cata- tors with an excess of diols.
Numerous metals have been proposed as catalysts, such as sodium, potassium, lithium, calcium, magnesium, zinc, cadmium, manganese, iron, cobalt, nickel, tin, lead and bismuth, as well as the carbonates, oxides and alcoholates of the alkali and alkaline earth metals, alone or in a mixture.
In a US patent, zinc chloride, aluminum chloride, antimony chloride, antimony fluoride and boron fluoride are specified as catalysts, which, however, must be added in large amounts (up to 1 mol percent) in order to achieve an effect.
Also the catalysts specified in a published German patent application, namely the oxides, chlorides, sulfates, acetates, alcoholates, as well as salts of higher aliphatic or aromatic monocarboxylic acids of the elements from the third and fourth group and the second subgroup of the periodic table, are added in relatively large amounts (up to 0.5 mol percent).
It has now been found that high molecular weight linear polyesters such. B. polyethylene terephthalate, obtained by transesterification of diesters from dicarboxylic acids and monohydric alcohols containing 1-6 carbon atoms with diols and poly condensation of the diol ester formed by the polycondensation in the presence of alkali, alkaline earth, or manganese Zinc salts of silicic acid, arsenic acid, stannic acid, selenic acid or phosphoric acid in an amount of 0.005 up to 0,
05 mol percent, based on the diester used, by adding the catalysts to the reaction mixture before the transesterification and heating this reaction mixture to 120-300, removing the split off alcohol from the reaction mixture and removing the diol ester obtained in this way Dicarboxylic acid polycondensed under reduced pressure at a temperature of 250-285.
The particular advantage of the process according to the invention is that the amounts of catalyst to be used are significantly lower than in the known processes.
Alkali metal silicates, preferably Na2Si20 @ 21120, sec. Have proven to be particularly suitable catalysts. Sodium arsenate, sodium selenate, sodium stannate, sec. Magnesium orthophosphate, manganese phosphate and zinc phosphate have been proven.
The polycondensation catalysts are added to the reaction mixture containing the diester and the diol before the transesterification. As dicarboxylic acid esters, for. B.
Esters of terephthalic acid, isophthalic acid, phthalic acid, sebacic acid, adipic acid, succinic acid, with 1 to 6 carbon atoms containing monohydric alcohols such as methyl alcohol, butyl alcohol, isohexyl alcohol, etc., use. As diols, for. B. Use: ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, butane-1,4-diol, hexanediol, etc.
The heating of the reaction mixture is preferably carried out at 120-130, so that the alcohol which has been split off is removed from the reaction mixture. The polycondensation of the diol diester formed in the first reaction stage, for. B. the diol diester of terephthalic acid, to the high molecular weight, linear polyester takes place under reduced pressure at a temperature of 250-285.
Example 1 150 g of dimethyl terephthalate, 120 g of ethylene glycol and 0.04 g of sodium silicate (= 0.0238 mol / o, based on the dimethyl terephthalate used) are heated to 190 with stirring, with methanol beginning to distill off . After 6 hours, during which the internal temperature is slowly increased to 210 ge, the split off methyl alcohol is distilled off.
The oil bath temperature is then kept at 250 while introducing nitrogen in a vacuum-tight vessel which is provided with a gas feed pipe, stirrer and a descending condenser with receiver, and the pressure from 760 mm to 0 over the course of 21 hours , 3 mm reduced. The oil bath is now heated to 278 and kept at this temperature for 3 hours, while the mass becomes increasingly viscous and forms a high molecular weight linear polyester. The melt obtained in this way can be used to form fibers which can then also be stretched.
Example 2 150 g of dimethyl terephthalate and 120 g of glycol are mixed with 0.04 g of sodium stannate (= 0.0243 mol o / o, based on the dimethyl terephthalate used) and, as described in Example 1, transesterified and polycondensed. The product has a K value of 55, determined in phenol jetrachloroethane, and can be spun into threads in the molten state, which show high strength values after stretching.
Example 3 200 g of di-n-butyl terephthalate and 112 g of glycol are mixed with a mixture of 0.04 g of manganese phosphate (-0.0197 mol / o, based on the di-terephthalic acid used -n-butyl ester), 0.01 g of antimony oxide and 0.01 g of zinc acetate are mixed and polycondensed as described in Example 1. The polyester is characterized by its particularly light color and has a K value of 55, determined in phenol tetrachloroethane. The fibers formed from this melt can be stretched into threads.
