Sewing machine. The present invention relates to sewing machines, more particularly those whose drive mechanism for the work has a qua druple movement claw and which are used in particular for closing filled bags, although they can also be used to make the bags themselves.
The invention relates to a sewing machine having a main control shaft, characterized in that it comprises a drive mechanism for the work comprising an oscillating balance, driving links between said shaft and this balance for oscillate the latter, a drive bar pivotally assembled with the balance and intended to receive therefrom a longitudinal reciprocation, an arm rigidly connected to said drive bar and directed transversely to the direction of the lon gitudinal reciprocation of this bar, the assembly between said bar and said arm being such that it allows to adjust the longitudinal position of the arm on the bar,
connections between the main shaft and the arm to cause a pivoting movement of the bar relative to the beam, and a drive claw connected to said arm by a device allowing the claw to be inclined in a perpendicular plane cular to the axis of the main drive shaft.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the sewing machine forming the subject of the invention. Fig. 1 is a horizontal section of the machine by a plane situated just below the work-supporting surface, certain parts of the frame situated below this plane being supposed to be partially torn off to better show other parts.
ri ig. 2 is an end view of the machine, seen from the left end of FIG. 1 with the needle head cover removed.
Fig. 3 is a view from the rear of the machine in which the longitudinal axis of the main drive shaft is disposed vertically instead of horizontally, as in FIGS. 1 and 2, this position being that used for sewing filled bags.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the various parts of the assembly of a dragging claw and a driving bar detached from each other, FIG. 4a shows a fragment of the upper portion of a support arm of the drive bar, seen from the right of FIG. 4.
Fig. 5 is a partial vertical section of an oil tank provided with a device which makes it possible to stop the flow of oil when the machine is at rest, FIG. 5a being a horizontal section of the reservoir by line 5ra of FIG. 5.
Fig. 6 and 6a are respectively an elevational view and a plan view of a variant of a shut-off valve, applicable when only a single lubricating tube is used. Fig. 7 is an axial section of a portion of the drive shaft and shows how the oil from the reservoir is distributed between the various bearing surfaces.
The machine has been shown in FIGS. 1 and 2 in the position which it usually occupies for sewing flat articles, for example in the manufacture of bags, by oppo sition to closing filled bags. It goes without saying that when the machine will be used to close filled bags, its position will be such that the work-carrying surface will be located in a vertical plane, that is to say that the base and the arm support -false will have their longitudinal axes arranged vertically, instead of horizontally, and that the control pulley will be placed at the top, as shown in fig. 3. The machine will be supported by a pedestal or the like.
The frame of the machine comprises a base 1 having a work-carrying surface 15, from one end of which rises a column 2 (fig. 2 and 3). A cantilever arm 3 protrudes laterally from the upper end of the column and terminates in a needle head 4. A main drive shaft, reigning longitudinally over the entire length and at the end. inside the base, journals in bearings formed in this base. To facilitate assembly, the shaft is established in two sections 5 and 5a (fig. 1) which are linked together by a coupling 5b and can be regarded as forming a single unbroken shaft.
At the right end, the shaft passes through the wall of the frame and protrudes outward, the protruding end carrying a combined assembly 6 of handwheel and pulley through which motive power can be applied for driving the machine from any suitable source. With the shaft is a crank 7 carrying an eccentric collar 8 with which a connecting rod is assembled, the assembly method being clearly represented in Swiss patent No 298105 of February 1, 1952.
As also shown in this patent, the upper end of the connecting rod is connected to one end of a needle lever which is pivotally supported at a point in (or near) the middle. of its length, as shown in said patent. The other end of the needle lever is re linked by a rod 9 (fig. 2) to a block 10 fixed to a needle holder bar 11 which is mounted to slide vertically in tubular sinet necks 12 and 13 carried by the needle head.
It will be realized that the needle lever will receive from the drive shaft 5 an oscillating movement which will be transmitted, by the connections established between the crank 7 and the needle lever, to the needle bar 11. The latter carries at its lower end a needle to which an alternating movement through the work is communicated between the successive driving movements of said work along the work surface 15 (Fig. 2).
At the lower end of the surface 15, as shown in FIG. 3, there is a slotted plate 16 pierced with slits through which a claw 17 (fig. 2) works to effect the driving of the work during sewing. The material being sewn, whether this material is flat or in the form of a filled bag, is held against the plate 16 by a presser 18 (fig. 2) which pivots at 20 on a support rod 21 fixed to a door bar. -pressor 19 mounted in bearings of the needle head 4.
The presser 18 is normally kept in contact with the work by a spring 22 which surrounds the presser bar 19. A device of a common type (not shown) allows the presser bar to be lifted by. view of the introduction or removal of the work.
The drive mechanism of the structure, a portion of which is shown in FIG. 4, comprises the claw 17 which is supported and driven by the following four movements: it is raised to come into contact with the work; it is then moved forward to drive the work; it then receives a downward movement away from the work and is finally returned to its original position. The forward (or drive) and return movements are communicated to the claw by a drive bar 23, in a manner which will now be described.
As shown, the bar 23 is offset and is intended to support the claw so that it acts along a line which is to the left of a drive balance described below. This makes it possible to give the frame a shape suitable for facilitating the movement of the filled bags. At the left end of its offset portion, the drive bar 23 is provided with a vertical wing 23a which has a flat surface on which a groove 61 is formed, the proportions of which are such that it can receive tenons 25 ( Fig. 4a) protruding from the cooperating face of a drive bar support arm 24, shaped when these elements are assembled.
The vertical wing 23a has a threaded hole intended to receive a screw 26 by means of which the support arm 24 is fixed to the drive bar 23. An opening 60 made in the upper portion of the support arm 24 and through which the screw 26 passes is elongated in a direction which is parallel to the groove 61, so as to allow lateral adjustment of the support arm 24 with respect to the bar 23, and hence lateral adjustment of the claw 17 which, as will be explained later, is supported in an adjustable manner by the support arm 24; this support arm cannot rotate relative to the bar 23 due to the assembly of the tenons 25 with the groove 61 formed on the vertical face 23a of the bar.
To make it possible to adjust the position of the claw relative to the support arm 24, this claw is not fixed directly to this arm; it is supported, with the possibility of vertical adjustment, by a claw holder 27 which, as will be seen later, is angularly adjustable with respect to the support arm 24. The claw holder 27 has an arcuate opening 29 to through which one can insert a tightening screw 30 intended to be screwed into a threaded hole 31 of the support arm 24. The claw holder 27 also has an opening 28 through which one can have access to the screw 26 when wish to adjust the position of the support arm. The claw holder 27 has a groove 32 intended to receive a tail 33 of the claw 17.
An opening 62 made at the bottom of the groove 32 of the claw holder 27 allows a screw 37 to pass through said groove which passes through an opening in the shank 33 of the claw and which is screwed into a threaded hole 38 of the arm. support 24. The screw 37 serves as a pivot for the angular adjustment - permitted by the opening 29 - of the claw holder 27. A tapped hole 63 is made in the claw holder 27 to receive a locking screw 64 which enters. in contact with the undersurface of one of the longitudinal portions of the claw.
This constitutes a protection against the risk of rotation of the claw relative to the claw holder while the claw is in contact with the work. A part 34 serves to retain a needle guard 36 and has on the back a groove 35 which is assembled with the tail 33 of the claw, this part also having on its opposite face a groove 65 in which the tail of the guard fits. -needle 36.
The needle guard and its support, as well as the claw 1.7 and its support 27, are fixed to the support arm C 24 by the screw 37 which passes through the aligned holes of the various parts and which screws into the threaded hole 38 of said support arm, As has been mentioned, the screw 37 constitutes the pivot around which the claw holder 27 can be rotated,
the amplitude of the augular movement being determined by the length of the arcuate opening 29. Since the shank 33 of the claw is tightly fitted into the groove 32 of the claw holder 27, its angular position is determined by that of the claw holder. , which is maintained in the desired adjustment position by tightening screw 30. The claw assembly mode allows it to be adjusted in three different ways.
It can be adjusted in the longitudinal direction of the toothed extensions by moving the support arm 24 relative to the drive bar 23, which is permitted by the oblong opening 60; vertical adjustment is allowed by - the oblong opening of the tail 33 of the claw; and the angular adjustment is effected by the angular movement of the claw holder 27 around the screw 37 as a pivot.
The drive bar 23 is fixed to a shaft 39 (fig. 1) which is supported so as to be able to oscillate by a balancer 42 (fig. 2) receiving oscillating movements of a drive eccentric 40, the movement being transmitted by means of a connecting rod 41 to the balance. The connecting rod 41 is connected to the ba lancer by a bolt 44 which can be fixed in any desired position along an arcuate slot 43 made in an arm of the balance (Fig. 2). The balance 42 is fixed to a shaft 45 which is supported by bearings at the rear of the base of the frame.
It goes without saying that the oscillating movements thus communicated to the balance 42 have the effect of communicating to the drive bar 23 and, pm through the latter, to the claw 17, their back and forth movements. The amplitude of the oscillating movement of the ba lancer 42 and, consequently, of the longitudinal movement of the drive bar, can be adjusted by adjusting the position of the bolt 44 in the slot 43, the latter being sufficiently long to give the desired range of motion to the training bar.
The support arm 24 is connected by a connecting rod 68 (fig. 2) to an eccentric 67 which is carried by the main shaft, so that this arm oscillates the drive bar around its pivot 39 to bring the claw. 17 in contact with the work, or to remove it. Thus, the claw is animated by the quadruple movement desired to come into contact with the work and make it advance, then return to its initial position. Below the holder is a quadruple motion looper 46 (Fig. 2) which cooperates with the needle in forming the stitches. This looper is mounted on the upper end of a looper holder 47 which is pivotally supported by a bolt 48 carried by a pitch 48r attached to a shaft 48b which is oscillating mounted in the base of the machine. .
To the looper holder 47 is fixed a ball stud which is embraced by a collar formed at one end of a rod 49, the opposite end of which also carries a collar which encircles a ball stud carried by an arm 50 ( fig. 1). The arm 50 extends from a member 50a which receives an oscillation around a fixed shaft 51 extending in the lateral direction of the base of the machine.
As has been explained in more detail in the above-mentioned patent, the member 50a receives its oscillation from a looper stroke eccentric 52, carried by the main shaft 5, by means of connecting members comprising a sleeve 51a mounted on the shaft 51 and provided with an arm 51b which is connected by a pin 51c, subjected to the action of a spring,
to one arm of the gold gane 50a. The sleeve 51a has an arm 51d which carries a ball stud connected to the lower end of a connecting rod comprising at its upper end a collar cooperating with the eccentric 52. Means make it possible to communicate to the looper movements allowing it to 'avoid the needle, these movements being synchronized with the gripping and .d'abandon movements of the loop communicated to said looper by the mechanism described above.
Such means comprise an arm 48e fixed to the shaft 48b which is. pivotally connected to the lower end of a connecting rod provided with a collar 48d surrounding an eccentric carried by the main shaft 5c ,.
As indicated previously, means regulate the flow of oil intended to lubricate the drive mechanism of the work and other parts when the machine occupies the position shown in FIG. 3, that is, the position in which it is used to close filled bags. In this position of the machine, the oil is brought to the bodies to be lubricated from a reservoir 53 via various pipes 53a (FIG. 3).
One of these pipes leads to a pocket 53b (fig. 3) from which the lubricant is transferred by a wick 68 which contains an axial duct 68a (fig. 3 and 7) to a pad 69a mounted in a wall -69 ( fig. 1 and 7) placed inside the base of the machine. The left section 5ca of the main shaft is hollow and is filled with a wick which receives the oil through a hole 70 drilled in the shaft and which communicates with the axial duct 68a.
The lubricant is then distributed from the axial duct of the shaft through radial openings facing the di to bearings and eccentrics, such as the drive eccentric 40 and an eccentric 72 (fig. 7) actuating a setting device. The lubricant supplied to the bearing tends to flow by gravity downward along the surface of the mainshaft when that shaft occupies the vertical working position for closing bags, and is liable to be discharged at points. where it is not desired.
To prevent such an unwanted flow of oil, a helical groove 54 is made in the bushing 69a near the lower end of this bushing, the direction of the propeller being such that any oil flowing along the line. The shaft is forced upwards by the pumping action of the groove. During machine stops, the oil remaining in the tank would naturally continue to supply the various parts until the tank has been emptied of its contents.
To avoid this result, in this tank is mounted a check valve consisting of a ball 55 housed in a cage 58 which is fixed to the lower wall of the tank, this cage being composed of two metal wires in the shape of U < / B> whose planes are perpendicular to each other. The position occupied by the cage is such that when the machine is not running, the ball rests in the opening of a channel 57 going from the reservoir to a manifold 58 from which the various pipes 53a leave which end in the various parts of the machine, said ball thus blocking the channel from the reservoir.
When the machine is running, its vibration keeps the ball away from its seat and, therefore, the oil can easily flow from the reservoir to the manifold through channel 5 7 and then pass through the pipes to the various parts. of the -machine. When the machine stops operating, the ball returns by itself to its seat constituted by the opening of the channel, the flow of oil from the reservoir being thus automatically stopped. The ball is preferably made of steel or some other metal, and in any event it is significantly denser than the oil it displaces.
The ball forming the check valve of the lubricating apparatus may, if desired, be located directly at the upper end of the lubricant distributor pipe 53a, as shown in FIGS. 6 and 62, instead of being arranged in the manner shown in FIG. 5. In this case, the U shaped metal wires 56a are mounted on a small nozzle in the top of the pipe and then serve to retain a ball 55a above the end. top of a small duct of the nozzle.
The latter can be screwed into the lower end of the tank. This arrangement is advantageous when there is only one distribution pipe 53a. It goes without saying that the ball will rest on its own - on the edges of the orifice existing at the top of the nozzle when the machine ceases to vibrate due to the interruption of its operation. The oil reservoir can be filled by an oil cup 73 (fig. 1) arranged at the top of said reservoir.
The machine can be used to trim flat items, such as in bag making. In this case, the surface supporting the work and the cantilever arm will be arranged horizontally. However, this machine is particularly suitable for closing filled bags and, for this purpose, the work surface and the cantilever arm will be arranged vertically.
It must be in tended due whenever there is question, in the present description, of the arrangement or of a vertical or horizontal movement of one or more of the parts of the machine, this indication relates to the my china having the work surface and the cantilever arm arranged horizontally.
