einer homologen Kresotin- säure den Benzoylrest A einführen, indem man sie beispielsweise mit einem gegebenen falls methylsubstituierten 2-Alkoxy-benzoyl- bzw. 2-Aeyloxy benzoyl halogenid acyliert, wo bei gegebenenfalls schon in dieser oder einer späteren hierzu geeigneten Reaktionsstufe die Acyloxyg-ruppe unter milden Bedingungen zur Hydroxylgruppe verseift und diese alkyliert ;

Process for the preparation of an optical brightening agent. It's been a long time. It is known that acyl derivatives of 4,4'-diaminostilbene-2,2'-disulfonic acid have the property of acting as optical brighteners in daylight due to more or less violet to blue fluorescence, as they do not have their own yellowish color completely white substrates by more or less pure,
Compensate blue radiation more or less completely. The technical evaluation of this property soon showed that the nature of the acyl radicals is not. It is irrelevant, yes., that the .leyl residues play a decisive role in several respects for the usability and possible uses of the end product.
Among other things, they can decisively influence the fluorescence intensity, the color of the emitted fluorescent light, the light fastness, the affinity to textile fibers and the water solubility of the alkali salts of the diacyl derivatives and thus not only about the degree of usability as an optical brightening agent, but also about the Possible use. be of decisive influence for very specific purposes.
In order to meet modern demands, an optical brightening agent made from technical 4,4'-diaminostilbene-2,2'-disulfonic acid or its diacyl derivatives, because of the low yellow color of these compounds, must above all be characterized by a large amount of fluorescence. highlight the intensity, because otherwise the concentration of the active ingredient that is too high to bring about the lightening effect is necessary, with the intrinsic yellow color making it disturbing.
The new optical brightening agents are characterized by very good fluorescence intensity. A modern optical brightening agent must also be distinguished by a purely blue fluorescent light, because only in this case is it able to compensate for the yellowish inherent color of the substrate as fully as possible. The new optical brighteners also largely meet this requirement.
Since even very low concentrations of the active ingredient on the substrate are supposed to bring about the lightening effect, the lightfastness of a modern optical bleaching agent must also be very good, otherwise the fluorescence ceases very quickly in daylight and, above this, the yellowish intrinsic color of the decomposition products emerges additional yellowing of the substrate occur.
The new optical brighteners according to the invention also meet this requirement, depending on their composition, well to very well. In order to be usable even from very dilute solutions, such as in rinsing liquors for white laundry, a modern optical brightening agent must have good affinity for the substrate, for example for cellulose fibers, and good substantivity.
which, on the other hand, must not be too large, since otherwise, with repeated treatment, an undesired accumulation of the whitening agent occurs on the repeatedly treated fibers, the inherent color of the compounds and their decomposition products having an ugly clouding effect.
The method according to the invention allows the affinity to be influenced particularly easily. of the end product to specific substrates by selecting the appropriate alkyl radicals. Finally, a relatively good solubility is essential for use in cold washing liquors for white laundry. of the diacyl compounds or% v. their alkali salts must be present in water, otherwise the preparation of the treatment solutions would cause difficulties due to the precipitation of insoluble precipitates.
The new compounds according to the invention are particularly distinguished in this respect from known ones. It is. the person skilled in the field of optical brightening agents is very well aware that diaeyl derivatives of 4,4'-diamino stilbene-2,2'-disulfonic acid, the acyl radicals of which are derived from lower fatty acids, for example completely from acetic acid,
a substantivity to cellulose fiber that is far too low and a fluorescence that is too reddish and of moderate intensity. rather than being used in very dilute solvents - as a whitening agent. could be used for cellulose fibers in washing liquors.
The dibenzoyl compounds of 4,4'-diamino-stilbene - '?,' "- disulfonic acids are much better nouns. Although the simplest dibenzoyl compound has the disadvantage of an extremely low fluorescence intensity, which is also suggested in the 4, 4'- Tue- (4 "-am:
ino-benzoy lamino) -stilbene-2,2'Ldisulfon, acids has been remedied, but this compound class has been made illusory again by the pronounced poor Lielitfastness. Finally, the recently known 4,4-di- (2 "-alkoxy @ benzoyl-amino.) - stilbene-2,2'-disulfonic acids show a very intense blue fluorescence and are lightfast and also noun,
but have the common disadvantage of pronounced poor solubility of their alkali salts in cold water, which adheres to all symmetrically constructed dibenzoyl derivatives of 4,4'-diaminostilbene-2,2'-distilfonic acid.
In the present process, a further class of completely new, very interesting diacylderiva.t.en of 4,4'-diaminostilbene-2,2'-disulfonic acid is disclosed, which have the general formula
EMI0002.0060
in which K is hydrogen or the methyl group, R- is a substituted or valley-substituted lower alkyl group and F is an acyl radical from the group of lower alkyl carboxylic acids different from the benzoyl radical A,
of the lower phenalkylarboxylic acids, the lower phenoxyalkylcarboxylic acids, the phenylcarboxylic acids, the lower alkoxycarboxylic acids and the phenylaminocarboxylic acids.
The new compounds according to the invention accordingly represent asymmetrically diacylated 4,4'-diaminostilbene-2,2'-disulfolic acids and are characterized in that at least once a methyl-substituted \? Alkoxybenzoy oil residue occurs.
They are distinguished from the known symmetrical dibenzoy oil derivatives to a greater or lesser degree, depending on their composition, by the improved water solubility of their alkali salts.
These new, according to the invention unsymmetriseli diacylated derivatives of 4,4'diaminostilbene-2,2'-disul.fonic acid are obtained from their easily accessible ones. Monoacyl compounds by reacting the free amino group with an aylating derivative of another carboxylic acid, the components being chosen so that a 2-alkoxybenzoyl radical occurs at least once in the end product.
So you can, for example, in the technically easily accessible 4-nitro-4'-aminostilbene-2,2'-clistil- fonsäure with an acylating derivative of a salicic acid or
a homologous cresotinic acid to introduce the benzoyl radical A by acylating it, for example, with an optionally methyl-substituted 2-alkoxybenzoyl- or 2-aeyloxybenzoyl halide, where the acyloxyg group may already be used in this or a later reaction stage saponified under mild conditions to the hydroxyl group and alkylated this;
is - which remarkably can happen without changing the benzoylamino bond - whereupon the nitro group is reduced to the primary amino group and this until the primary amino group disappears with an acylating derivative, for example an anhydride or an acid halide , a carboxylic acid from the group of the lower alkyl carboxylic acids, the lower phenalkyl carboxylic acids,
the lower phenoxyalkylcarboxylic acids, the phenylearboxylic acids, the lower alkoxycarboxylic acids and the phenylaminoarboxylic acids.
--On the other hand, a similarly produced 4-aylamino -'-aminostilbene-2,2'-disulphonic acid can also be used, in which the acyl residue present is derived from a carboxylic acid contained in the groups listed above. is, with one of the above, treating the benzoyl group A as a leading agent.
The acylation takes place with acid halides. It is useful with the aqueous solution of the alkali salts of the amiiiostilbene compound at a lower, normal or slightly elevated temperature with the addition of acid-binding or mineral acid-blunting agents, such as sodium carbonate, calcium or magnesium carbonate, magnesium oxide or sodium acetate, if necessary also in Presence of organic, immiscible with water,
inert solvents for the acid halides, such as benzene, toluene, etc., with thorough stirring in heterogeneous Pliase or in the presence of with. Water-miscible inert organic solvents for the acid halides, such as acetone.
The 2-alkoxybenzoyl radical which is characteristic of the new unsymmetrical diacyl derivatives of 4,4'-diaminostilbene-2,2'-disulfonic acid can be substituted in the benzene ring by a methyl group, which depending on its position Group characteristic differences in the fluorescence intensity of the comparable.
End products result, and in the alkyl radical: the alkoxy group by halogen, lower alkoxy and preferably by hydroxyl groups. The 4 -Nlethyl-2-alkoxybenzoviderivat.e are distinguished from the comparable compounds by particularly intense fluorescence.
They form the most valuable class of the unsymmetrically cloned derivatives of 4,4'-diaminostilbene-2; 2'-disulfoic acid according to the invention. Particularly interesting subgroups in this class are the 4-ethyl-2-ethoxy and 4-14-ethyl-2-oxethoxy-benzoyl derivatives because of their easy accessibility and the slightly increased fluorescence intensity. For the 2- (oxy-alkyl
oxy) benzoyl derivatives, it should be noted that they are made from 2-oxybenzoyl derivatives, which in turn are obtainable in the easily accessible 2-oxybenzoyl derivatives by mild saponification of the acyloxy group with hydroxyl groups Oxalkylation can be obtained,
for example with ethylene or propylene or CTly cerin-halogenhy in it. When converting 2-oxyalkyloxybenzoic acids with halogenating agents into the carboxylic acid halide, the aliphatically bound hydroxyl group is also replaced by halogen and cannot easily be exchanged for the hydroxyl group in the end product.
If the second acyl group, which differs from the benzoyl group A, is from a lower alkyl carboxylic acid, for example acetic, propionic or butyric acid, from a lower phenalkyl carboxylic acid, for example phenylacetic acid, -'- chloro or 4-3 # ethyl phenyiacetic acid,
the hydrocinnamic acid, etc., or from a Plienoxy alkylearbonsänre, for example phenoxyacetic acid derived from 2- or 4-1lethylphenoxyacetic acid, etc., the compounds according to the invention or their alkali salts are distinguished by greatly improved water solubility, although the substantivity im Comparison with the corresponding dibenzoyl derivatives decreases. and the fluorescence intensity of the latter does not. fully achieved.
However, good water solubility and reduced substantivity can be very desirable, as has already been shown above, especially if there is an affinity for proteinaceous fibers, as is the case here.
If the second alkyl radical different from the benzoyl radical A is derived from a plienylaminocarboxylic acid, the product according to the invention thus an optionally substituted 4- (2 "-alkoxybenzoylamino) -4'- (phenyl-ureido) -stilbene-2, Is 2'-disulfonic acid,
it is also characterized by good water solubility. the alkali salts are also characterized by good substantivity and can be used from very dilute solutions in washing liquors. The phenylureido radical can except with. Phenylurea chlorides also formed by treating the aminostilbene compound with Phenylisoey ana.ten. will.
If the second asyl residue, which differs from the benzoyl residue A, is derived from a phenylcarboxylic acid, in addition to the unsubstituted benzoyl residue, the 4-: 3-ethylbenzoyl residue, the 4-acetaininobenzoyl residue, the 2-alkoxybenzoyl residues different from A also come into play Question.
The difference to the benzoyl radical A can then, for example, only in the presence or absence. the 4-lethy lgi lip in the benzene ring of the two? Alkoxybenzoyl radicals are in the same alkoxy group, or, for example, both benzoyl radicals can contain the 4-position 1-ethyl group in the benzene ring, but be different in the alkoxy group.
Here, for example, the compounds characterized on one side by hydroxyl-substituted alkoxy groups are particularly valuable because they are more water-soluble at full fluorescence intensity and yet the substantivity is not. by doing :
The mass is reduced, as is the case in the presence of two liydroxy / substituted alkoxy groups in the molecule. Strangely enough, however, are also the alkali salts of unsymmetrical dibenzoyl compounds which do not contain any substances that favor water solubility,
Much more soluble in water than those of the symmetrical dibenzoylaminostilbene disulfonic acids derived from the two different benzoyl radicals, which is a completely unpredictable effect of great technical importance.
If the second ayl radical, which is different from the benzoyl radical A, is derived from a low molecular weight allzoxyearboxylic acid, that is to say a unisite product of the aniinostilbene compound with.
For example, chloroformic acid in ethyl or ethyl ester is present, the inventive, unsymmetrical diacyl derivative of 4,4'-diaminostilbene-2,2'-d'isulfonic acid is so soluble in the form of its alkali metal that it from sour egg, liquor can be used as a thickening agent for proteinaceous fibers, especially for MV olives.
As can be seen from the foregoing, the new process allows the production of a large number of valuable new combinations, and it is possible to produce new brightening agents particularly well suited to each special purpose by selecting the asylum residues accordingly.
The new iuisimetrically diacylated 4,4'-diaminostilbene-2,2'-disulfonic acids in the form of their alkali salts are more or less yellow-colored compounds which dissolve in water to form practically colorless solutions . In very small quantities, they produce daylight on imperfectly white substrates. a very good optical brightening effect and depending on the.
Composition for lightening cellulose fibers, rayon, wool and goods made from it and as additives to textile treatment agents, such as soaps and synthetic detergents, and also in rinsing and washing liquors for white goods.
Subject of the present patent is. now a method of making an optical brightening agent. The process is characterized by the fact that 4-nitro-4'-aminostilbene-2,2'-disulfonic acid is acylated with 1 -ol of a 2-acyloxi # -4-methylbenzoyl halide,
the acyloxy group saponified to the hydroxyl group and this ethy lates, then the nitro group of the stilbene derivative is reduced to the amino group and the compound obtained is reacted with 1 mol of a compound introducing the phenylearbamino radical.
The new lightening agent obtained, which is -l-phenylureido-4'- (2 "-ethoxy - 4" -methyl-benzoylamino) -stilbene-2,2'-disulfonic acid. a yellowish powder.
Example: 40 parts of 4-nitro-4'-aminostilbene-2,2'-disilphonic acid are dissolved in 800 parts of water with the addition of 10.6 parts of calc. Soda. dissolved, cooled to 5 and, after adding 6.8 parts of crystallized sodium acetate, with vigorous stirring. a solution of 21.3 parts of 2-ethoxy-4-methylbenzoylechloride in 60 parts of benzene is added without the temperature rising above 8.
-lau now stirs at 0 to 8 until a sample taken no longer contains any diazotizable amino groups. If not all amino groups have been acylated even after 10 hours of stirring, then there are. you add as much acetyl-nr-cresotinic acid chloride until this is the case.
The reaction mixture is then neutralized against litmus with 15% soda solution and heated to 80 to 90. The benzene is distilled off on the descending cooler while stirring and the acetyl groups are saponified at the same time by allowing enough soda solution to flow in until the mixture remains permanently pherrolphthaleinalkaliseh.
After adding 60 parts of sodium chloride, the mixture is left to cool, filtered off with suction and dried. The disodium salt of 4-nitro-4'- (2 "-oxy-4" -methyl-benzoylamino) -stilbene-2,2'-disulfonic acid is thus obtained as an orange-yellow powder which is readily soluble in water.
57.8 parts of this 4-nitro-4 '- (2 "-oxy-4" -nie- thyl benzoylamino) stilbene-2,2'-disulfonic acid sodium are dissolved in 600 parts of water and 4 parts of 100% sodium hydroxide solution and added to 55 to 6ä with 1.5.4 parts of diethyl sulfate ver sets.
One stirs. at 55 to 65, until the cream mixture only reacts slightly alkaline with phenolphthalein. The reaction product separates out as an orange-yellow, easily filterable mass.
The disodium salt of 4-nitro-4 '- (2 "-ethoxy-4" -methyl-benzoylamino) -stilbene-2,2' -. Disulfonic acid is obtained using the Bechamp method with iron shavings and acetic acid reduced, and the aminodisulfonic acid precipitated with concentrated hydrochloric acid.
The 4-amino-4'- (2 "-ethoxy-4" -methyl - benzoylamino) - stilbene-2,2'-disulfonic acid thus obtained forms a pale pink after drying. colored powder and, when alkaline agents are added, dissolves in water to form a yellow solution.
26.6 parts of 4-amino-4 '- (2 "-ethoxy-4" -methyl-ben7, oyl-amino) -stilbene-2,2'-disulfonsä-Lire who in 600 parts of water with the addition of 5, 3 parts cale. Dissolved soda. and at 20 to 27 7 parts of phenyl isocyanate are added with vigorous stirring. After stirring for 10 hours at 20 to 25, the mixture is heated to 80 to 85 and filtered hot.
When the filtrate cools, the disodium salt of 4-phenylureido-4 '- (2 "-ethoxy-4" -methyl - benzoy lamino) - stilbene-2,2'-di- s, lyphonic acid as a pale yellowish, separates filterable, crystalline mass applies.
This product is sufficiently substantive to produce and possesses useful flame-rescence effects on cellulose fibers. in addition, at the same time, the property of producing colorless to slightly yellowish colored wool, which fluoresces intensely blue to blue-green in ultraviolet light, which make the treated wool appear more pure white in daylight than the untreated wool.
