Le courant alimentant les électro-aimants .1 etB arrive par deux conducteurs C-C'. Tant que le plateau 221. portant les co quilles tourne, le courant est normalement coupé; err effet, dans un boîtier H, en ma tière isolante par exemple, sont disposés des contacts D-E fixes en face desquels sont des contacts mobiles D'-E' portés par deux tiges T coulissant dans le boîtierH et. dont l'autre extrémité porte des contacts F' et G';
Shell molding process and apparatus for carrying out this process. The present invention comprises a shell molding process in which a plurality of two-piece shells are used, filled by a lower taphole melting furnace, this process being characterized by operating cycles, in each of which is fed. a shell under the tap hole of the furnace, this hole is opened automatically as soon as the shell has taken its position of wise filling, the shell is left in the aforementioned position for a determined time at least equal to the filling time, said hole of casting is automatically.
closed as soon as the shell is filled, the shell is brought to the open position, leaving. the molded part is dropped while the next shell is brought into the filling position and the latter is closed, the shells being used periodically, and in a determined order.
This continuous operation of the furnace results in very low heat losses, and therefore a very large saving in fuel or heating energy. On the other hand, the operations become automatic as well as the movement of all the shells and the result is a significant saving in labor.
The process is very advantageous for casting light alloys, but it can also be used with all kinds of metals.
The invention further comprises an apparatus for the. implementation of this process which is. characterized in that it comprises a melting furnace provided with a lower tap hole, a set of identical two-piece shells, means for supporting these shells making it possible to place any one of them under the tap hole, means allowing. to give the shell support periodical movement and stop, so that a stop occurs when a shell is.
under the taphole and lasts a sufficient time to allow the filling of this shell, means for successively opening each shell in synchronism with the above periodic movement, means for successively closing each shell in synchronism with said movement. periodic, means for closing and opening the taphole during stops and in synchronism with periodic stops of the support. shells.
All of these means can be controlled by a motor device ensuring automatic operation and supplemented by an auxiliary device for ejecting the soft parts which could. get stuck across shells.
In a particularly advantageous embodiment of the invention, an electromagnetic device, the closing of the circuits of which is ensured by the movement of the set of shells, by the metal cast into the shell at the end of filling, and by the relative position of the two half-shells automatically controls the opening and closing of the tap hole.
In order to make the invention fully understood, a description will now be given, with reference to the appended schematic drawing, of an embodiment given by way of example only and without any limiting nature on the scope of the invention.
Fig. 1 is a front view with partial axial section of the device comprising two shells.
Fig. 2 is a front view of the same apparatus, one of the shells being under the taphole.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the same apparatus along the line III-III of FIG. 2. FIG. 4 is a schematic view of an electromagnetic device for opening and closing the taphole.
Fig. 5 represents a variant of the positive opening and closing device of a shell.
At the lower part of a furnace 10 for melting the alloy or the metal used which can flow through a nozzle 11, there is disposed a circular plate 21, movable around a tubular axis 23 fixed on a frame 8.
On the plate 21 are fixed arms 21 'carrying the two-piece shells, one 44 fixed, the other 45 mobile. To simplify the explanations, there is shown a plate 21 shell holder comprising only two shells, but it could. have a greater number of shells; this number being conditional on the particular installation to be produced.
The plate 21 is supported by a stop 1 to. balls or by a smooth stop itself resting on a plate 22 comprising a spout 22 '.
The plate 22 is integral with a helical wheel 24 coaxial with the tube 23 and engaged with a screw 25.
The screw 25 is integral with a coaxial pulley P, the rotation of said pulley being obtained naked from a JI motor of which. the pulley drives a belt 27.
The drive of the plate 21 is determined by two sliding knobs 26 respectively. in a notch of this plate 21 which supports them. One of the tocs 26 being in engagement with the nozzle 22 ', the drive takes place until the corresponding click. is raised by a ramp 28 supported by the frame 8. The dragging of the plate 21 does not resume until after a half-turn of the plate 22, because, at this moment, the spout 22 comes to rest against the second knock 26 resting freely in its accommodation.
The device ensuring the opening of the. shell 44--45 has a lever 33 which is twisted loosely around the plate 22.
The lever 33 can be driven by the spout 22 ', thanks to a catch 26', sliding vertically in the thickness of the lever 33, this catch being supported by a spring 34 which allows the catch 26 to disappear when is pushed back by a ramp 28 'carried by a fixed double slide 38 and between the branches of which the lever 33 can slide freely.
The lever 33 is held or brought back into position (when it is not driven) by a cable 35 hooked at its end. Cable 35 passes over. two idle rollers 42-43 fixed to the frame, then hooks onto a pallet 66 carried by a carriage 65 mounted to slide ho rizontally in a slide provided at. through the frame 8. The carriage 65 is held in a position determined by a return spring 67 fixed at one of its ends to the frame 8 and at the other to the carriage. 65.
The closing control of a keel 44--45 is provided by means of a cam 55 in the form of a spiral supported by arms 70 fixed to the frame 8.
Each of the shells is. consisting of a fixed part 44 relative to the plate 21, and a part 45 sliding on horizontal rods 46. This part 45 is carried by a fork 64 provided with a rod sliding freely in a support 47 located at the end of the arm 21 '.
A rod 53 can itself slide in the axis of the fork 6-1; the rod 53 carries an end of axis 50 on which is. -engaged the fork of a lever 48 'articulated on an axis 49' and the other end of which is idle roller 31. In addition, at the end of the lever 48 'is fixed a spring 30 consisting of a blade whose. position is adjustable by means of a screw 37.
The device for opening and closing the small taphole consists of a set of mechanical members (cam, levers, cable passing through the tube 23) controlled by the relative movement of the plates 21 and 22; device that it is. to the. scope of the skilled person to achieve.
Also, we will limit ourselves to describing a very advantageous electromagnetic positive device. Above the frame 10 of the oven (see fi, -. 4), a horizontal balance 14 is. articulated around an axis 2, carried by a support. 2 'fixed; the balance 14 is provided, at one end, with a helical groove 13 into which penetrates a pin 12 'fixed to the rod 72; at its other end, this balance 7.4 is articulated on an axis 7 carried by a part 6 forming the end of a vertical arm 15 constituted by two threaded rods 15 'joined by a tensioner 18 and articulated by an end piece 3 around an axis 9 carried by the mobile armature 17 'of an electromagnet A.
In the normal closed position of the taphole, that is to say as long as the current does not flow in the coil it, a spring 20, hooked on the part 6 and on a support 5 fixed to the frame, raises the armature 17 'which is moved away from the electromagnet A by pivoting around its axis 4.
We have. shown in fig. 4 the position of the frame 17 'loris of the casting, the spring 20 then being tensioned.
The neck hole opening device comprises a second electromagnet B with movable armature 40 pivoting about an axis 41.
The current supplying the electromagnets .1 and B arrives through two conductors C-C '. As long as the plate 221. carrying the shells rotates, the current is normally cut off; err indeed, in a housing H, made of an insulating material for example, fixed contacts DE are placed opposite which are movable contacts D'-E 'carried by two rods T sliding in the housing < I> H and. the other end of which carries contacts F 'and G';
two springs S maintain the contacts D-D ', E-E' normally separated as long as two conductive pads F and G do not come to press on the contacts F 'and. G ', which takes place when the plate 21 is stopped and a shell under the taphole.
The pads F and G are. connected by a suitably isolated cireuit, shown for the most part in dashes, and whose ends .J and J 'are. placed at the level that should. reach the molten metal when the. casting in the shell is complete. The ends J and J 'are, on the other hand, electrically connected to keys K and K (located behind the plane of the figure), said keys coming into contact if the shell is not perfectly closed.
On the conductor C 'are placed two keys LL' which are in contact only when the armature 40, provided with an extension 40 ', presses on L', that is to say as long as the current is not not pass through coil B.
The above device works as follows: When the plate 21 has stopped, so that the shell 44-45 is just under the taphole, the pads F and G have raised the pads F 'and G' and their rods T, the contacts D-D ', EE' are closed.
The electric current circulates in the box .1 passing by D-D 'and L-L'. The mature ar 17 is attracted and drives the axis 7; the balance 14 pivots around its axis 2 while lifting the rod 12 which also undergoes a small rotation, as a result of the helical shape of the groove 13.
As soon as the shell is full, that is, the molten metal reaches the level J - J, a derivative current passes through J ---, T 'and. E-E ', runs through the coil B which attracts the armature 40, which interrupts. the current in L - L '.
The electromagnet A ceases to be excited and. the spring 20 comes to recall the axis 7 which drives the balance 14. which abruptly applies the rod 12 on the orifice of the taphole. This rod 12 is also driven by a slight rotation which facilitates a tight seal.
If, in the casting position, the shell is not perfectly closed, the contacts Ii-Ii 'touch each other and, the points J and J' being electrically united, everything takes place as if the casting had taken place, it is that is to say that the electromagnet B comes into operation and cuts off the contact at L -L 'and, consequently, the supply circuit of the electromagnet A which, consequently, no 'does not act on the reinforcement 17'.
The relative displacement of the two parts -14 --- 45 of a shell can be achieved in different ways. Fig. 4 shows a simple embodiment applicable for the casting of a wheel W; the axis 50 carried by the rod 53 can slide in a groove 50 'of the fork 64. The end 53' of this axis acts as the core 4u the hub of the wheel when the shell is closed for casting.
By turning the lever 48 'around its fixed axis 49', clockwise, we see that it determines the extraction of the spindle 53 'before driving the fork 64 and the half -shell 45.
Fig. 5 relates to a more complicated opening device. The axis 50 is integral with the fork 64 and the rotation of the lever 48 around the fixed axis 49 directly drives the half-shell 45 which slides on the pins 46. The lever 48 is disposed horizontally and the shell seen from above. above. A second lever 52 is coupled by a connecting rod 51 articulated to the lever 48. The lever 52 pivots about a pin 71 carried by the fork 64 and drives a pin 72 fixed on the rod 53.
The rotation of the lever 48 in the direction of clockwise directly drives the fork 64 and the half-shell 45; the consecutive rotation of the lever 52 drives the axis 72 to the right, including the disengagement of the central pin 58. By continuing the movement of the lever 48, the roller 57 rotating idly on the articulation axis 73 abuts on a lever 54 articulated on -Lin axis 59, and the latter drives a finger 63 integral with a sliding sleeve 56 freely on the rod 53. The sleeve 56 carries punches 62 which eject the molded part.
A return spring 60 ensures the return to position of the lever 54 when the shell is closed and a stop screw 61 allows the position of the lever 54 to be adjusted.
The above apparatus may furthermore very advantageously comprise a stop 29 (Fig. 1 to 3) fixed to the frame of the oven, and each half-shell 45 a stopper 29 'capable of coming into contact with the first, when the shell is closed, said stopper 29 leaving free passage to the shells when they are open.
In addition, vertical elastic blades 68 (fig. 3) can pass between the parts 44--45 of an open shell, so as to cause the fall of a molded part which would have remained stuck across, the drop of the mold. molded part taking place through an opening 69 formed under the shell.
The general operation of the apparatus described is. the following If the device is taken in the position shown in fig. 3, and the motor being running, the nozzle 22 'drives the catch 26 with which it is in contact, the rotation of the plates 21-22 taking place in the direction indicated by the arrows. The rotational movement of the plate 21 continues until the catch 26 is sufficiently raised by the ramp 28 to no longer be in contact with the spout 22.
During this same part of the movement, the shell corresponding to the catch 26 in contact with the spout 22 'will pass from the open position to the closed position. Indeed, the corresponding spring 30 rubs against the cam 55 from the internal origin of the spiral; at the end of the movement, the position of the spring 30 pushing back, the lever 48 will be as shown to the right of the. fig. 2.
The shell arriving. opposite the tap hole 11 'is therefore closed and it will be seen that the opposite shell is open, so that the stop 29' carried by the corresponding mobile half-shell comes into contact with the fixed stop 29 arranged for determine the precise stop of the shell in the casting position.
As soon as a shell is in the neck position, the closing rod 12 is lifted by the electromagnetic device, as described above. The rod 1.2 closes the tap hole as soon as the metal has reached the level of the contacts. Throughout the casting, the plate 21 is stationary since the spout 22 'must make a half turn before. to meet the second notch: 26 and (read the speed of rotation of the plate 22 has been determined, in order to have sufficient stopping, of the shell holder plate.
During the stopping period of the plate 21, the drive plate 22 continues its rotation; the open 22 'meets the stop 26' integral with the arm 33; the arm 33 is therefore driven, the cable 35 is therefore pulled and it drives the carriage. 65 and its pallet 66; against the spring 67. This movement therefore continues until the catch 26 'is pushed back by the ramp 28', so that the catch 26 'stops contacting the spout 22 '. The pallet 66 drives the roller, c c which determines the rotation of the lever 48 key the shell opposite to that which is. in filling under the hole (the casting.
This position corresponds to that of 1a. left shell in fig. 2, while the right shell, in the same figure, represents the position of the shell under the tap hole with the II contact box actuated by the P and C contacts of the mold.
As soon as the shell opposite to the. shell in filling is open, the stops 29 and 29 'cease to be in contact, and the movement of the plate 21 can resume when the spout 22' meets the catch 26 diametrically opposite to that which it has just left. When the plate 21 resumes its rotation, the closure of the shell which must be filled with molten metal is ensured as well. that the corresponding spring 30 of this shell rubs against the cam 55.
The movement continues. cloned at the rate, in the case shown, of a half-turn of the shell-holder plate per revolution of the drag plate. Immediately after opening a shell and during the start of its rotational movement, it encounters the elastic blades 68 which pass between the half-shells 44-45 and. determine the fall of a molded part that could get stuck.
The operation. of the apparatus described is therefore fully automatic. It is understood that the demolding carriage 65 could be placed in any other way, and in particular in order to be able to actuate the lever -I8 placed in position. horizontal in fig. : 5.
When the process is used to cast aluminum. or aluminum alloys, the taphole closing rod can be made of cast iron protected by a special coating. base of sodium silicate, Spanish white and graphite. It should only be put into service when the plaster is perfectly dry. This rod rests on a graphite seat.
We can use the opening time of the shell to clean and cool the latter by jet of compressed air or by spraying depending on the size of the castings.
It is of course (read one small. To make (the modifications to. The apparatus described and to replace certain devices by devices playing the same role, without departing from the scope of the invention. It is also possible, to obtain a drive of the shell holder plate, make a device ensuring a slight braking on this plate. When it is a question of a set of two shells, one could, without departing from the scope of the invention, give them a movement, recti line reciprocating (instead of circular), so as to bring them successively under the taphole of the furnace.
