Machine for molding plastic objects. The present invention relates to a machine for molding objects in plastic material, such as for example plates, trays or other objects, for example in plastic clay.
This machine comprises a frame and a spindle journalled in this frame and arranged so that it can support a mold on which the plastic material is placed, as well as a shaping tool mounted on said. frame near said spindle and which can be brought into and out of contact with the material placed on the mold carried by said spindle.
According to the invention, this machine is characterized by means controlled by a fluid and making it possible to move the tool in order to put it elastically in contact with said material at a speed which does not exceed a predetermined value.

Fig. 11 shows the electrical circuit diagram of the power supply circuits of the machine control motor.
Fig. 12 shows, partly in section and partly in elevation, a detail on an enlarged scale. The machine comprises a frame consisting of a support plate 20, uprights 21 and 22 and horizontal cross members 23, 24 and 25. The upper cross member 25 is formed by a V-shaped part with side flanges 26 and 27. A head 40 which carries the mold is mounted on the upper end of a pin 41, journaled at its lower end in a slider 42 mounted on the lower cross member 23, and its upper end is journaled in a bearing 43 housed in the cross member 24.
A friction pulley 44 is mounted on the spindle 41 between the bearings 42 and 43 and is in contact. with a drive plate 45 mounted on the end of a shaft 46 rotating in a support 47 established vertically between the cross members 23 and 24. The other end of the shaft 46 rests in a part 48 fixed to the uprights 22. -A pulley 49 is wedged on shaft 46. This shaft is driven by a motor 50 via a belt 51 secured to pulley 49.
The shaft 46 can be moved axially to bring the drive plate into and out of contact with the friction pulley 44 by means of a mechanism described below.
The shaft 46 carries fixed collars 53 -3t 54, and a helical and compression spring 55 is interposed between the support 47 and the collar 53 to urge the shaft 46 towards the right of FIG. 2 thus keeping the drive plate 45 out of contact with the friction louse 44. A lever 56 is articulated at a point of the support 47 and one of its fork-shaped arms is engaged between the collars 53 and 54. The other arm of the lever is connected to the piston of a compressed air cylinder 58. A rod 59 can slide transversely in a bearing located at the top of the support 47 and it is terminated by a brake shoe 60 in contact with a brake drum 64, mounted on the spindle 41.
The other end of the rod 59 is connected to the lever 56, and the rod 59 is biased towards the left of the. fig. 2 by a spring 63, interposed between the shoe 60 and the support 47, in order to be able to clamp said shoe 60 against the brake - drum 64.
The arrangement is such that when a pressurized fluid, for example compressed air, is supplied to cylinder 58 through tube 62, lever 56 is moved clockwise to force the shaft. 46 to the left of fig. 2 and put the trailing plate 45 in contact with the pulley 44, to turn the spindle 41 and move the shoe 60 away from the drum 64. When the pressure ceases to act in the cylinder 58, the spring 63 pushes the lever 56 again. counterclockwise to interrupt the dragging of the spindle 41 and to apply the shoe 60 to the drum 64.
In fig. 1 to 6, the tooling of the machine, as shown, makes it possible to obtain the molding of flat objects such as a plate 68. A quantity of plastic clay is placed or spread on the mold 38 and the latter. This is mounted on the head 40 at the upper end of the spindle 41. When the mold is placed, compressed air is supplied to the cylinder 58 to bring the driving and rotary plate 45 into contact with the pulley 44, which causes the mold and the material it contains to rotate. Compressed air is also introduced into the bottom of a cylinder 100, which causes a piston 101 housed in the latter to rise.
The lower end of the cylinder dre is articulated at 102 to a support 103 mounted on the rear of the frame, and the upper end of a rod 104 of the piston 101 is. articulated to extensions 105 and 106, oriented towards the rear, of an arm 107. The arm 1.07 is journaled in a support 108 mounted on a block 109 supported by the cross 24.
A shaping or sizing tool 110 is mounted, in an adjustable manner, on the outer end of the arm 107, and when the latter rotates counterclockwise with respect to FIG. 2, the tool 110 is brought into contact with the material placed on the mold and, as the latter rotates, the surface of the material is deformed to give it the proper profile using the tool 110. The support 108 comprises a console 112, oriented forwards, and the arm 107 carries an adjustable stop 113, constituted, for example, by a screw which cooperates with the arm 112 and with the aid of which the lowest position is determined of the arm 112 and of the tool 110.
Tool 110 has a shape such that it can give the desired profile to the object being molded, and the location of this tool can be adjusted vertically and laterally, in the manner usually adopted for tools used for molding. at the turn or at that free.
When the molding is finished, compressed air is supplied to the upper end of the cylinder 100, which forces the piston 101 downwards and the tool 110 is mounted; until it comes to occupy the position shown in the ends. . 1 and 2. The compressed air supply to cylinder 58 is then interrupted, which stops the drive of spindle 41 and the shoe 60 is applied to drum 61. The operator then removes the bearing mold. . the molded part.
The admission of pressurized fluid into the cylinder 58 is regulated by a series of distributors 160 mounted on the upper cross member 25, and. these distributors are controlled, with predetermined offsets, by cams 190 mounted on a shaft 155 supported, at its ends, by (the bearings 156, suspended from the lower face of the cross member 25. The shaft is extended to the- beyond a bearing and its protruding end carries a pulley 157, driven by a motor 158 using a belt 159.
The distributors 160 have control rods 161 and they are normally closed; slow opening is caused by the repression of the corresponding rods 161. Each rod 161 is. actuated by a lever 162 articulated at 163à a support 164 fixed on the upper cross member 25. The free end of the lever 162 carries a roller 165 which can come into contact with the corresponding cam 190. Pressurized fluid, such as compressed air, is supplied to the machine through a supply conduit 166 to which certain of the distributors 160 are connected.
Each (the control cylinders have an exhaust port and an intake light, and the cylinder 100 has, at each key its ends, an intake light and an exhaust port, so that 'It can operate double-acting. Each exhaust lumen is linked to the utt (the distributors 160 and, in this case, one side of the distributor 160 is connected to the exhaust port. (the cylinder, then that leaves the other side opens into the open air through a regulating valve 168 (FIG. 12), preferably of the needle or needle type, with the aid of which the flow rate can be regulated with precision.
The distributors 160 which are connected to the inlet duct 166 are connected to the inlet ports of the cylinders 58 and 100 by means of regulating valves 169 2) which may be of the same type as the valves 168.
The pulley 157 of the camshaft 155 carries a lug 171 which can come into contact. with a limit switch 172 mounted on the frame of the machine, so that the latter can operate according to a complete cycle at the. following a single maneuver made by the operator. This operation is obtained by means of some suitable electrical circuit, such as, for example, that shown in 6g.11, for which one of the power lines 174 is connected by a wire 175 to the motor 158, then that the other line 176 is connected, by wire 178, to contact 177 of the switch limit- 1.72.
The moving contact of this switch is connected to the other terminal of the motor by wires 179 and 180 and to a contact 181 of a relay whose coil 182 is connected, at one end, to line 176, while its other end leads to a pad 183 of a switch 18-1 with a push-button, placed in the bare spot. appropriate machine. The other pad 185 of this switch is connected to the other line 174 by the wire 186. The other contact 187 of the relay is connected directly to the line 176.
When the operator pushes the button 18.4, a circuit is formed which passes through the coil 182 of the relay, which attracts the armature 188 thereof, so that it can connect the two contacts 181, 187 of the relay between them. This closes the circuit. feed of the motor 158 by the contacts 181 and 187 of the relay and the wire 180, and the motor thus drives the pulley 157 and the shaft to. cams 155 while the lug 171 moves away the rocking arm of the switch 172 and exceeds the latter to allow said arm to come to rest on the contact 177, by the action of its return spring.
At this moment, we can release pous evening 18.1, which cuts off the excitation of coil 1_82 and opens contacts 181 and 187; but motor 158 continues to be energized and running, as current is supplied to motor 158 through wire 178, limit switch 172, and wires 179 and 180. When the camshaft 156 has made one full revolution, the lug 171 again acts on the limiter switch 172 by moving the contacts away from the latter, which interrupts the motor supply circuit.
The cams 190 occupy such locations on the shaft 155 and their length is itself such that the various operations of the machine can be carried out successively and in a desired order and for predetermined periods of time. The total time required for performing the various operations depends somewhat on the particular nature or shape of the objects or articles to be molded and this time is generally of the order of six seconds.
The machine is shown in fig. 1 in the starting position. When the operator pushes the button of switch 184, the relay 182 is energized, thus giving power to the engine 158, and when the camshaft 155 begins to rotate, some of the cams 190 cause the opening of the corresponding distributors 160 to supply the cylinder 58 and the bottom of the cylinder 100 at the same time. As explained above, the effect of the pressure in the cylinder 58 gives rise to the rotation of the spindle 41 at the help from the infeed board 45.
While these cylinders 58 and 100 are thus supplied, the exhaust port of the upper end of cylinder 100 is opened and the shaping tool 110 lowers towards the mold. Tubes 199 and 200 terminate at the inlet tops of cylinder 100, and tubes 201 and 202 can connect their exhaust ports to the open air through the regulator or discharge valves 168.
An exhaust tube 201 is connected to a discharge valve 168 which is adjusted so that a relatively rapid descent of the shaping tool 1.10 from its raised position (fig. 2) is obtained to soot position for which it is roughly in contact with the material placed on the mold. When the tool has reached this position, the tube 200 is connected to the supply conduit 166 via an ordinary expansion valve (not shown).
In this way, a back pressure is exerted on the piston 101, so that the remaining part of its stroke takes place at a relatively low speed. The most advantageous speed at which the tool moves during the actual molding operation depends on several factors, in particular the nature of the material to be molded, the state in which this material is found, as well as the outline, dimensions and shape of the part to be molded. Using a control device, arranged as described above, this two-phase movement of the shaping tool can be regulated with very great precision.
When molding is complete, the exhaust port from the lower end of cylinder 100 is connected, through tube 202, to the corresponding discharge valve 168. This causes a substantial reduction in the pressure acting on the underside of piston 7.01, the effective pressure being slightly less than that acting on the upper face of said piston, so that piston 101 begins to slowly descend and or the 110 rises slowly away from the molded object. Then the communication between the tube 199 and the supply duct 166 is interrupted and the tube 201 ceases to be connected to its discharge valve 168 and the effect of the pressure in the tube 200 causes a rapid rise in the pressure. 'tool to its upper position.
At this time, the pressure ceases to act in the cylinder 58, and the exhaust port thereof is put into communication with the free air, which interrupts the drive of the spindle 41 and causes the intervention of the brake 60. After having made a complete revolution, the lug 171 moves the contacts of the limit switch 172 aside and the machine stops.
It can be seen that the arrangement described above greatly simplifies the work of the operator, since the latter only has to remove the mold with the molded object that it contains and place a new mold, container. a shapeless mass of material, on the machine after having made the adjustments which may be necessary to take into account the kind of objects which one wants to obtain and. the nature of the clay used. Therefore, the operator need not be skilled in the art of spreading the material or lathe or gauge molding.
On the other hand., The machine makes it possible to obtain a uniform modeling of the material and these two operations (spreading. And. Softening) can be regulated with precision in each particular case, so that the finished product is at least equal, if not better than that obtained by working by hand. In addition, an operator makes it possible to obtain a significantly increased production.
The succession and the relative durations of the various operations are. indicated by the angular diagram of FIG. 10, in which sector .l corresponds to the relative time during which the tool is in its raised position, sector B to. that of the rapid descent of the tool, sector C to that of the slow descent of the tool during the molding operation, sector D to that of stopping the tool in contact with the part to be molded and the sector F, to that of the return of the tool to its initial raised position.
It will be appreciated that with the distributor device as described above, it is possible to modify not only the speed of movement of the tool, but also the adjustment of this speed at any point of the cycle of movements. of the tool. The operator can quickly and efficiently allow the tool to complete half of its stroke at high speed and the other half at reduced speed. On the other hand, the variation of the speeds may be such that the passage from the rapid movement to the slow movement takes place approximately at the lower third or at the lower two thirds of the total stroke of the tool or in all. another point wanted.
This constitutes an important characteristic of the invention, since the distance over which the tool travels before coming into contact. with the material contained in the mold, obviously varies with the constitution of the mold and with the shape of the object to be obtained. For example, if one wants to mold plates, the tool moves at a high speed during a very important part of its stroke and the slow movement takes place only during a small fraction of this stroke. On the other hand, if we want to mold a deep bowl, the tool is only moved at high speed during a relatively small part of its stroke, while the movement corresponding to the depth of the bowl is done. slowly.
The time setting for these different operations is, of course, determined by the shaft 155 which carries the cams 190 and which is driven by a motor. Consequently, the introduction of the pressurized fluid into the lower end of the cylinder takes place at a determined time and the effect of the reduced back pressure, exerted on the upper face of the piston in order to slow down the movement of the piston. the tool down, is also done at a determined moment, while the pressures are predetermined and constant. When the operator decides to vary when the tool begins to move slower, he can do this by adjusting the needle valves.
For example, if he wants the tool to start advancing more slowly at a point nearer the end of its downstroke, the operator can. further open the needle valve located between the high pressure fluid distributor and the bottom of the cylinder. It can also achieve the same effect by leaving the needle valve which regulates the flow of the high pressure fluid in the position it occupies and by opening the needle valve inserted in the exhaust tube from the ex. upper end of the cylinder, which means that with the same quantity of air at the given pressure and which is admitted into the bottom of the cylinder, the piston will be able to make a longer stroke.
The operator therefore has a quick and efficient means of carrying out a very precise adjustment of the movement. of the tool, which means that the operator can reproduce exactly the work by hand polishing obtaining him object or article of any kind and using clay of any kind.
For the lathe or gauge molding of an object obtained from certain plastics, more particularly clay, it has been found that it is preferable to perform the molding in the wet state and generally the molding takes place. done under the best conditions when the moisture content is increased beyond that which the material normally contains. For conventional lathe molding, this additional moisture is provided by the operator who applies a wet sponge to the material as he proceeds with the molding and shaping.
As with the a -Litres operating phases of lui molding of this kind, the operators become more or less skilful as regards the application of water on the object which one wishes to mold. However, it is easy to see that the application of humidity is not regulated in an exact manner and that, in fact, it can vary considerably.
The object of the present invention also includes a polishing means to provide additional humidity to the object during wetting, this humidity being supplied at a predetermined time and at a given location which may vary as molding proceeds with moisture being supplied in predetermined amounts and all of these factors being precisely controllable.
The pivoting arm 107 which supports the tool carries a lateral bearing 220 in which a shaft 121 is journaled, this shaft terminating towards the free end of the arm 107, near the tool 110, and towards the rear, in the vicinity of the pivot axis of the arm 107, the axial displacement of said shaft 121 being prevented by sleeves 122. A piece of angle iron 223 is mounted, in an adjustable manner, by means of screws 224 on the shaft 121 and this angle can come into contact with an adjustable stop 225 mounted on a fixed point of the machine.
A support 226 is fixed, in an adjustable manner, on the front end of the shaft 121, for example by means of the screws 227, and a duct 228 is mounted on the support 226 and extends rearwardly by being connected to a flexible tube 229. The front end of the duct 228 extends slightly beyond the shaping tool 110 and this end is threaded to be able to receive a threaded plug 230. In the wall lateral to this end are formed holes 231 spaced from each other in the axial direction.
Several jets 232 are mounted on the conduit 228, these jets being screwed into sleeves 233 secured on the conduit 228 and the calibrated orifice of each nozzle communicates with an internal annular groove 234 formed in the internal face of the corresponding sleeve 233. As a result, the jets can be angularly adjusted on the duct 228 and that they communicate constantly with the interior thereof.
The sleeves 233 are separated from each other by seals 236 and are prevented from moving axially by a collar 237 fixed on the duct 228 by the intermediary of a locking screw 238. The sleeves 233 are tightened strongly. against the seals 236 and are held in the position given to them with the aid of a washer 239 on which the threaded plug 230 bears.
It is thus possible to modify the location of the jets longitudinally with respect to the arm 107 and each of these jets can be individually and angularly adjusted with respect to the duct 228, so that the jets of water leaving these nozzles can be directed. to the desired points of the material to be molded. The nozzles are initially adjusted so that one of them projects water at a point near the center of the material resting on the mold. Another nozzle projects the water at a certain distance from the contour of the material placed on the mold and a third emits a jet directed towards an intermediate point.
The flow rate of the nozzles is also controlled by one of the cams 190 with the aid of which the pressurized fluid, for example compressed air, can act, through the intermediary of the duct 243, on a diaphragm which controls a distributor 244 established in a conduit. water supply 245. The effect of the pressure in the duct 243 causes the opening of the distributor 244 and the latter flows into the flexible tube 229 (FIGS. 1 and 3).
If it is desired to mold flat objects, the arrangement of the cam 190 which controls the flow of water is such that water is supplied to the nozzles shortly before the tool comes into contact with the material to be molded. . When this contact takes place, a wing of the angle iron 223 comes into contact with the stop 225, which causes a rotation of the shaft 121 around its axis and, consequently, an angular movement of the jets 232 around said axis. As a result, the liquid jets emanating from these nozzles move radially outward along the material during the molding thereof, the final position of said nozzles being indicated by lines 247 in FIG. 6.
When it comes to the molding of hollow parts, the cam 190 which controls the flow of water is arranged so that the opening of the distributor 244 is obtained after the shaping tool has been lowered sufficiently. far into the mold so that the material is established more or less on the internal face of it, so that the jets emanating from the nozzles are directed towards the material and that a certain quantity of excess moisture is applied directly to the inside of the mold.
For lathe or gauge molding, it is not possible to predetermine the quantity of material necessary to obtain a given object, and there is a certain excess of material present. In other words, the quantity of material placed on or in the mold, at the molding station, is always more or less in excess of that which is actually necessary for the manufacture of the part to be obtained. When it comes to flat objects, this excess material accumulates at the periphery of the room and is. removed by the operator using a thin metal piece that he places against the edge of the object when the letting is finished.
This operation lasts a certain time and requires His effort. on the part of the operator and he must be very skilled not to deform or damage the edge of the object. The present invention also comprises a scraper device which is fixed to the shaping tool and which intervenes automatically to remove this excess material.
The device in question consists of a blade 250 articulated, between its ends and at 251, to a fork-shaped support 252 which is mounted on a side arm 254 of which. a part 255, folded upwards, can be fixed, in an adjustable manner, to. the 110 shaping tool at. using screws 256. In the arm 25-1 is formed an elongated slot 257 suitable for receiving locking screws 258 mounted on the support 252, so that one can thus adjust the longitudinal position of said support 252 relative to the arm 254.
The support 252 is extended towards the rear by an arm 259 crossed by a rod 260, the lower end of which is articulated at 261 to. the. blade 250. The upper end of the. rod 260 est. threaded and carries a wing nut 262 and a helical compression spring 263 wedged between the nut 262 and the portion 259 of the support 252. In this way, the front end of the blade 250 is biased elastically downward. A squeegee 264 is attached to the front end of the blade 250 by screws 265 which also serve to retain a rib 266.
The front end of the blade 250 carries, on the side where the center of the mold is located, a rim 268, oriented upwards and the front end of which is formed by a bevel 270.
The device as described above is. mounted on the shaping tool 110 and its position can be adjusted, relative thereto, so that the squeegee 26-1 comes into contact with the peripheral upper edge of the mold, while the bevel 270 comes into contact with the peripheral edge of the part being molded. The contact. of the. squeegee 264 with the marginal part of the mold is made under the light pressure of the spring 263, so that said squeegee 264 can easily follow the surface of the part of the mold with which it is in contact without risking damaging that part. -this.
The function of the rib 266 is to direct the excess material upwards and at a relatively steep angle, so that this material is thrown over the front part of the blade 250 preventing any accumulation of material thereon.
The scraper device has been found to work very efficiently and to give the object a clean and precise outline while removing all of the excess material from the mold. It works in an absolutely automatic way during the last part of the molding operation.
In fig. 8, i1 is the molding of a hollow object 290, this object being intended to form a bowl for example. The shaping tool comprises in this case and, for example, an auxiliary part 292 intended to form a hole or an opening 293 in the center of the bottom of the bowl. The mold 38 comprises, in this case, a central passage 294 in which the material 295, cut to form the hole 293, is collected.
This operation sometimes leaves a fringe of material remaining along the internal face of the hole 293 near its lower end, and means are provided for automatically leveling this lower edge. Said means are constituted by a scraper 296, the lower end 297 of which is curved outwards. The scraper 296 is articulated, at an intermediate point 298, to the shaping tool 110.
The upper end of the scraper is connected to a piston rod 300, the piston 301 of which works in a cylinder 302 mounted on a. support 303 fixed to the shaping tool 110 by the screw 304. The piston 301 is moved to the right of FIG. 11 by the admission of the compressed air supplied by a duct 305 and this piston is brought back to the left by a compression spring 306.
The active end 297 of the scraper 296 enters the hole 293 of the object being molded and is at the height of the lower edge of said hole.
When the molding is finished, compressed air is admitted into the duct 305 by one of the distributors 160 controlled by one of the cams 190. In this way, the active end 297 of the scraper 296 comes into contact with the wall of the. hole 293 and as the mold rotates, this end effectively removes any fringe or excess material that may exist along the bottom edge of hole 293.
The cut material, which is in the form of a pellet 295, falls through the passage 294 made in the mold. The range of motion of the active end 297 of the scraper 296 towards the wall of the hole 293 can be varied using an adjustable stop 310 mounted on the shaping tool 110. When scraping the lower edge of the hole 293 is completed, distributor 160 is closed and conduit 305 is connected to one of exhaust cocks 168.
As already said above, we have shown in fig. 10, in the form of an angular diagram, the succession of operations A, B, C, D, E which constitute a complete cycle of ma chine and the total duration of which is about 6 seconds. It is obvious that the particularities of the cycle may be altered somewhat depending on the size and shape of the object to be molded, the material used, etc.
Experience has shown that the machine forming the object of the invention operates in a very efficient manner and makes it possible to obtain a much larger number of parts per operator than when the latter uses the manual or manual process. any of the mechanical methods applied heretofore In addition, the articles and parts thus obtained are of excellent quality.
