Elastic suspension device for cycles and motorcycles. Bicycles have already been produced in which the rear fork is articulated to the frame behind the crankset and which have an elastic connection with the frame. These mounts have not been satisfactory up to now for many reasons and in particular because the links which they include do not prevent the lateral displacement or warping of the rear fork and the harmful action of the rear fork. clearances in the various parts, resulting in instability of operation and risks of rupture of the articulation axis as well as of the connecting members subjected to abnormal lateral forces.
The present invention relates to a positive resilient suspension device for cycles and motorcycles, characterized in that the connection between a pivoting fork supporting a wheel and the frame of the vehicle is provided by at least one steel tape arranged so as to present the shape of a closed ring of which two diametrically opposed points are made integral with the frame and the pivoting fork respectively.
The accompanying drawing, given by way of example, shows two embodiments of the invention applied to a bicycle frame.
Fig. 1 shows the elastic suspension device mounted on the rear wheel.
Fig. 2 shows it applied to the front wheel. Fig. 3 is, on a larger scale, a spring formed by a steel blade wound in a number of turns.
Fig. 4 shows a circular leaf forming part of a spring with several leaves and shows how the two ends overlap in order to allow adjustment.
In fig. 1, the body A - of the frame has, - at the rear of the crank P, a yoke Gl between the branches of which the rear fork B articulates in C, whose base tubes and uprights are joined by a tube -entretoi b which gives it the appearance of a second triangular frame.
The spacer b can be of variable shape and in particular curved, matching the shape of the wheel or of the mudguard and thus coinciding with the latter.
At their upper part, the frame A and the fork B are joined together by means of a spring D, formed by a steel blade wound in several turns as shown in fig. 3. This spring is fixed at two points diametrically opposed respectively to the tube A of the frame and to the top of the pivoting fork B.
The fixing can be made either by screws or bolts passing through the spring, or by flanges which clamp the spring and which are fixed on the tube Al and the fork by means of screws or bolts b1. Fig. 3 shows a spring intended to be fixed by screws or bolts passing through the res out. The latter is provided with a hole dl for one of the screws and a slot d2 for the other, so that by loosening the screw which crosses this slot we can enlarge or reduce the circle formed by the spring and vary the strength of it.
The number of coils of the spring being chosen according to the average weight of the cyclists, the unevenness of the road will cause the rear fork to pivot on the crankset, more or less crushing the spring D, as shown in phantom in d.
Regarding the front of the bicycle, the elastic suspension can be obtained as follows: The top of the fork B2 is articulated in C2, between the branches of a yoke G2 which acts as the fork crown and is integral with the steering tube A2 which receives the handlebar stem. This tube, as usual, is ball-mounted in the bush A'2 of the frame and carries at its upper part a part F2 fixed by the nut f which is used in the usual way to block the steering cups.
This part F2 could be mounted directly on the handlebar stem.
For its part, the head of the fork B2 carries a single or double lever b2, directed upwards and to which it is rigidly attached.
It is between the upper end of the lever b2 and the right angle of the part F2 that the spring D2 is fixed, held by the screws b1 which pass through the holes dl, d2 provided in the spring.
The spring D2 forms the elastic damping member which returns the front fork mo bile to its initial position after absorbing the shock produced by the passage of the bicycle over an obstacle.
Instead of being formed from a single wound steel blade, the spring D2 can be made up of a number of blades, such as that shown at D1 in FIG. 4.
As can be seen, each blade, in the shape of a circle, is pierced in its middle with a hole dl for the passage of one of the fixing bolts b1, while its two ends are pierced with buttonholes or elongated holes d2 in which passes the other bolt, leaving each blade the ability to open or close to adjust the strength, flexibility and length of flexion.
The suspension device applied to the front and rear forks of a cycle or motor cycle gives a comfort and a great flexibility which, in a pinch, makes it possible to ride without tire or with all the replacement tires.
Such a suspension keeps the rigidity of the frame, does not allow any warping, is very simple and inexpensive to apply; it does not change the position of the cyclist on the frame and does not modify the line of the cycle or motorcycle, it does not weigh it down and is not fragile. It does not modify the position of the cyclist in relation to the pedals when passing obstacles, nor the tension of the chain. It allows the assembly of all the usual accessories.
The springs work normally, without jerks, in compression as in relaxation, and they form two homogeneous blocks excluding any possibility of play and noise in use.
