Oil bath crankset for Cycles. The invention relates to a crankset for cycles, provided with an oil bath lubrication system.
This crankset comprises a tube arranged around the axis between the -cuvettes of two lateral ball bearings and forming with these cups a sealed chamber intended to be filled with oil and surrounding the axis which is thus constantly bathed in the 'oil.
According to a particular embodiment of the invention, the two abovementioned cups, one fixed, the other adjustable, are screwed directly inside @de the pedal box. The tube forming the oil chamber is force-fitted into the fixed bowl and it is joined to the adjustable bowl by means of a tight seal.
A channel communicating with the oil chamber can also be arranged in the axis of the crankset, this channel being normally closed on the outside by a screw which is removed to introduce the oil. The appended -dessin shows, in axial section, a crankset executed in accordance with the invention.
In this drawing, we see at 1 the axis of the pedal and at 2 and 3 the cranks integral with this axis. This has two bulges 4 and 5 against which the balls 6 and 7 of two bearings are supported, the cups of which can be seen at 8 and 9. These cups are screwed into internal threads of the bottom bracket 15.
The bowl 8 is provided on the outside with a lining 12 made of felt or similar material surrounding the axis 1 and clamped by means of a collar 13 which is screwed into an internal thread of the bowl 8.
The seal 12 has the effect of preventing oil leaks and preventing the penetration of foreign bodies into the bearing.
In a bore of the bowl 8 is force-fitted a tube 14 concentric with the axis 1 which it surrounds with a certain interval. Im tube 14 is engaged in a bore of the bowl 9 and it rests against a lining 17 of felt or equivalent product in order to ensure sealing. A 17 'washer takes in the friction of the felt on the balls.
A collar 18, which is screwed onto the cup 9, forms a lock nut and enables this cup to be locked with respect to the pedal box 15 once its position has been adjusted.
On the outside, the bowl 9 is provided with a sealing gasket 19 of felt or similar substance. This trim is covered by a cap 20 screwed onto the bowl 9.
In order to allow the introduction of oil into the chamber 21 formed between the tube 14 and the axis 1, this axis is pierced with a channel 23 communicating with said chamber 21. The inlet opening of this channel is fitted with a cover screw 24.
In the crankset which has just been described, the bearings are constantly bathed in oil, the communication between these bearings being effected by the gap formed between the axis 1 and the tube 14. Lubrication is thus ensured in a manner very regular and, as a result, the operation of the crankset is extremely smooth.
In addition, by virtue of the method of mounting the tube 14 and the fittings, the chamber containing the oil is strictly sealed. It is thus absolutely preserved against any penetration of foreign bodies and like. the bearings operate protected from dust, their service life is very long.
To ensure the filling of the chamber 21, the screw 24 is removed, oil is introduced through the channel 23 which is then recapped by means of the screw 24. The oil introduced is channeled to the bearings through the tube 14. and, thanks to the gaskets, it cannot spread into the bottom bracket 15. As a result. oil losses are extremely low and the filling of the oil chamber should only be renewed after traveling a very long distance.
It is understood that the invention is not limited to the. embodiment shown, this having been given only by way of example and that it is possible. without departing from the scope of the invention, modify the details of execution.
