Method and apparatus for converting liquid slag into foamed material by treatment with water. It is well known that porous building and insulation materials can be produced by expanding slag and the like. Ä. Can produce using water. Such processes are currently used on a large scale for the production of so-called "Hüttenbims", "Kunstbims" and the like. In this process, the slag is transferred directly into solid form, so that lump slag is produced that cannot be subjected to any deformation, but is comminuted to a suitable grain size.
If it is to be shaped, it must be bound with cement or similar binding agents. The applicant has long since worked out a fundamentally different process, with the help of which it carries out the process in a closed foam apparatus, where the water is injected into the molten slag while stirring by means of a water-cooled stirrer.
The advantage of this process is that it results in a liquid, moldable foamed slag which, without using a. special binder can be formed into finished stone or slabs. It is clear that such a process has great advantages.
The applicant has now developed an improved process which forms the subject of the present invention. This method of converting liquid slag into foamed material by treating it with water consists in the melt being treated with water in a continuous stream in a water-cooled, metallic cylinder that executes rotary movements.
When molten slag is mixed with water, steam is formed and dissolved gases are released at the same time, causing the slag to expand and give it a foam-like appearance; the foam thus consists of still viscous slag with steam and gas. The addition of water in the mixing cylinder must of course be regulated so that the slag does not immediately become a bgel @ iilill until it solidifies.
Since part of the water generally runs through the mixing cylinder next to the slag in the usual operation, without having enough time to evaporate, the same is expediently separated from the slag foam formed on a drain.
The invention also relates to a foaming apparatus for carrying out the method according to the invention.
An example embodiment of the apparatus for carrying out the method according to the invention is. shown in fig. -o 1 shows a water-cooled channel through which the liquid optical varnish in continuous stream in the upper part of a water-cooled, metallic, rotating, veglin-; en executing, z. B. rotating or oscillating drum? flows. which is arranged at an angle.
The cylinder wall 3 is double-walled, but can be open at the top. The cooling water is injected at 4. The sequence is shown at 5.
The dotted line then shows the water level in the apparatus wall. At 6 water is supplied for foaming. 7 shows the foam that flows out of your lower end of the cylinder together with the excess water. It slides over a grate consisting of longitudinally running water-cooled pipes 8 and 9, which is shown in FIG. illustrated in more detail:
is where the water passes down between the pipes and is collected at 10, while the foam slides on the pipes and passes between the water-cooled rollers 11, the roller spacing of which is about 6 111111. This creates a band of foamed slag, which falls at 12 on a wire conveyor or the like, through the snacking of excess water can drain off so that it is removed before the foam solidifies or cools down too much.
Instead of a conveyor, a casting machine can be attached for casting stones, blocks, or the like.

<tb> roller spacing, <SEP> the <SEP> continuous running speed etc. this deformation can be made as desired so that the rolled material flows together again without any separating surfaces in the material being able to be detected. This mate rial is then suitable for the production of molded stone, slabs or blocks.
The rolling can then also be carried out in such a way that the rolled products do not sinter together again. In this way, a material is obtained directly which, in its crushed state, is suitable for use with cement or similar binders together for the manufacture of lightweight concrete or insulating blocks or the like. Because of the great fineness of its gas bubbles, the rolled material is extraordinarily strong, homogeneous and at the same time light and has great advantages compared to the materials that are produced using the usual process for the manufacture of pumice.
The apparatus described has very significant advantages over the foaming apparatus previously used by the applicant. While both the apparatus wall and the agitator were covered with a thick layer of solidified slag, which narrowed the passage and gave the space an indefinite and variable size, and occasionally even allowed solidified pieces of slag to mix into the foam, in this way, the operating apparatus is kept perfectly clean. There is no crust on the water-cooled metal wall.
This is especially the case when the surface of the wall is kept moist, as here. Slag and foam flow easily and quickly along the surface of the metal, which offers so little friction that it looks like it has been oiled.
The apparatus described also has a great advantage in that the entire process can be looked up and tracked so that it is easy to check at any time that it is proceeding as desired.
