Measuring tool.
The object of the present invention is a measuring instrument which enables precise measurements to be made rapidly over the entire length of the measuring capacity of said instrument.
The measuring instrument forming the subject of the present invention is characterized by a measuring rod able to slide axially in a frame and carrying a rack which constantly drives, over the entire length of the measuring capacity, a gear train. swims fixed with respect to the frame and allowing the reading of the millimeters, by a multiplier system allowing the reading of the Vioo of mm, this system being movable with respect to the frame and to the measuring rod, in such a way that a member of said system can be brought into contact with the rack and take a defined position on it,
by a device allowing said mobile multiplier system to come into contact with the rack only when the measuring rod is fixed in a measuring position.
The appended drawing shows, by way of example, an embodiment of the instrument forming the subject of the invention, constituted by a micrometer with rapid measurements.
Fig. 1 is an elevational view of this micrometer, cover and dials removed, with partial section of the frame.
Fig. 2 is a section taken along A-B of FIG. 1, with cover and dial.
Fig. 3, is a section along C-D of FIG. 1, with cover and dials.
Fig. 4 is an elevational view of the complete micrometer.
Fig. 5 is a side view of FIG. 4.
Fig. 6 shows in section a special construction of the two bearings of the frame.
Fig. 7 shows in section a special construction of the micrometer anvil.
The frame 39 of the instrument carries, fixed at one of its ends, an anvil 48 and, making it vis-à-vis a measuring rod 32 which can slide axially in two bearings 39 'formed in said frame 39. The measuring rod 32 carries on one side a double rack 32 '(fig. 2). It is drilled so as to be able to contain a sliding pin 36. a spring 37 and a retaining ring 33 screwed at its end. A flange 38 is available on I? side of the rod 32 and it has two studs passing through the wall of the rod 32.
The sliding pin 36 door, attached to. its end by a screw 35, a push button 34. This spindle 36 comprises, to the right of the pads of the flange 38, two dirty transverse countersinks 36 '. The flange 3'8 can rest on one side, by its two studs, on the inclined planes of the transverse countersinks 36 'of the spindle 36 and, on the other side, against a movable plate 3.
A base plate 1, fixed by two screws. 53 to a bottom 41, itself fixed against the frame 39 by four screws 45 and two pins 22 ', takes in a longi tudinal countersink 32 "' (fig. 2) of the measuring rod 32 and thus prevents said rod from turn.
In this base plate I. under the movable plate. 4 is driven by an axis 20 (fig. 2) around which can turn a toothed wheel 0 which meshes with one of the parts of the double rack 32 'of the measuring rod 39 and with a pinion read which turns in the plate base 1 and in a bridge 2 itself fixed to the base plate 1 by means of a screw 54 and two pins 18. Said pinion 10 carries an eadran 44 and a hook 11 (fig. 3) to which is attached the inner end of a spiral return spring 31.
itself retained at its other end by a cotter pin 19 (fig. 1 fixed on the base plate 1 .. The movable plate 3 can pivot on the base plate 1 around an axis 21, fixed to the base plate base 1, and in addition to two positions determined by two retaining screws 13 and 1-1 screwed into the base plate 1. A lever 5. ending at one end with a toothed part 5 '* can turn around a pin 17 (fig. 1) mounted on one side in your mobile plate 3 (fig.
2) and on the other side in a bridge 4 fixed on the movable plate 3 by two pins 1'6 and a screw 55 (fig. 1).
A segmenl, toothed 6, fixed on the lever 5 by two screws 49, meshed with a pinion 12 which carries a graduated dial 43 (fig. 3). Said pinion 13 is pivoted in a lever 7 and in a bridge 8 fixed on the lever 7 by means of two pins 15 and a screw 56 (FIG. 1).
Said lever 7 can rotate freely around a screw 23 fixed in the movable plate 3. A spring 30, retained on the base plate by a screw 51. actuates the movable plate 3. A spring 28. retained by a screw 52 on the movable plate 3, presses on one side of the toothed lever 5. A spring 27, retained on the movable plate 3 by a screw 50, presses on the other side of the toothed lever 5. A spring 29, retained on the movable plate 3 using a screw 50, press the lever 7 so that the pinion 13 'remains in mesh with the sector 6.
A sheet of Plexiglas 42 (fig. 2) is retained by screws 57 inside a window of the cover 40, which is itself fixed against the frame 39 by two pins 22 and four screws 45.
At rest, the measuring rod 32 is in its position furthest from the anvil 48, held against the inside face of the rear bearing of the frame by a screw screwed into the measuring rod 32 (not visible in the drawing), this under the 'effect of the spiral spring 31, via the pinion 10. of the wheel 9 and the rack 32' of the measuring rod 32. The pin 3'6 is held by its bearing against the ring 33, under the effect of the spring 37. The pushbutton 34 is therefore located away from the ring 33 (FIG. 4).
The movable plate 3 is supported on the flange 38, itself a. the support by its two studs on the side of the spindle 36, at the front of the two transverse countersinks 36 'of said spindle 36, the toothed part 5' of the lever 5 thus being far from the crumble of the rod 32. To carry out a measurement, push-button 34 is pressed and the spring 37 being stronger than the spiral spring 31, the pin 36 will remain against the ring 3, and the measuring rod 32 will slide in the frame until it comes to rest against the piece to be measured.
During this travel of the measuring rod 32, its rack 3i2t will have driven the wheel 9 and the latter-the pinion 10 on which the dial 44 is located, allowing the millimeters to be read through one of the windows of the cover 40 The pinion 10 , by turning, will have increased the tension of the return spiral spring 3. 1. By increasing the weight on the push-button 34, the measuring rod 32 remaining in its position resting against the piece to be measured, the spring 37 will flex through the pin 36 which will leave the ring 33 and move until the push button 34 touches the ring 33 (fig. 1). The spring 30 constantly presses the movable plate 3 against the flange 38, and this movable plate 3 pivots around the axis 21.
During the displacement of the spindle 36, the two studs of the flange 38 will descend on the inclined planes of the two transverse countersinks 36 'of the spindle 36 and the movable plate 3, under the effect of the spring 30, will turn around the 'axis 21 until the toothing 5' of the toothed lever 5 has taken support
in the rack of the measuring rod 32. During contact with the teeth
5 'of the toothed lever 5 with the rack of the measuring rod 32 held fixed against the part to be measured, the engagement of the teeth will produce a greater or lesser rotation
of the lever 5 around the axis 17, either in one direction or the other.
When said engagement is complete, that is to say when the teeth of lever 5 will be permanently pressed against the teeth of the rack of measuring rod 32 by the effect of spring 30 and of movable plate 3, the lever 5 will have a well-defined position with respect to the measuring rod 32. The lever 5, by turning, will have driven the segment 6 which will have itself turned the pinion 12 on which the dial 43 is fixed which will allow the reading of mm to through a second window of the cover 40.
By releasing the weighing on the push-button 34, the spring 37 being stronger than the spiral spring 31, the measuring rod 33 will remain in its position, while the range of the pin 36 will be brought back by the spring 37 against the ring 33. During this movement of the spindle 316, the two transverse countersinks 36 'of the spindle 36 will push back by their inclined planes the two studs of the flange 38 which will itself come to bear against the movable plate 3 and make it. turn around the axis 21 by bending the spring 30, which will bring out the toothing of the lever 5 of the rack 3, 2 'of the measuring rod 32. At this time,
the bearing of the spindle 36 having come to rest against the ring 33 and the thrust on the push-button still decreasing, the spiral spring 31, which is under tension, will return the measuring rod 32 to its rest position by The addition of pinion 10, of wheel 9 and of crumble 32 'of said measuring rod 32.
The toothed lever 5, when not in engagement with the rack of the rod 32, is kept in balance by the two springs 27 and 28, so that the pinion 12 is in the middle of the toothed segment 6 and that a tooth of the toothing 5 'of the toothed lever 5 is perpendicular to the rack of the measuring rod 32 These two springs 27 and 2'8 allow the rotation of the lever 5 when it meshes with the rack of the measuring rod 32, and returns said lever 5 to its equilibrium position when it leaves the rack of the measuring rod 3. 2.
The spring 29 constantly presses the pinion 12 against the toothed segment 6 by means of the movable lever 7, with the aim of avoiding the toothing gap between said pinion 12 and said segment 6.
The measuring rod 32 is fitted freely without flapping in two bearings 39 'of the frame 3. 9, which must therefore be drilled exactly along the same axis. Such machining presents drawbacks and, in order to avoid them, the special construction given by FIG. 6. The two ends 39 'of the frame 39 each have a thread 39c followed by a cylindrical bore 39v terminated by a conical portion 396. Two rings 58 and 59 are screwed into the internal threaded portions 39c and are centered by a cylindrical portion in the cylindrical bores 39a.
These two threaded rings 58 and 59 are drilled to give passage to the measuring rod 32 and comprise an internal cone by which they maintain two ball joints 60 and 61 in contact with the two conical parts 39b of the frame 39. Both ball joints 60 and 61 are drilled so as to receive the measuring rod 32 in a sliding fit. The two ball joints 60 and 61 take their position against the two cones which serve as their support according to the measuring rod 32, which allows the latter to be able to slide freely in said ball joints even if the two bores of the two ends 39 ′ of the frame 39 are not machined exactly along the same axis.
It may be useful if the anvil of the micrometer is adjustable. Such an adjustable anvil is shown in FIG. 7. The end of the frame 39 which supports the enelume is carried away! on the side opposite the measuring rod. a bore intended to receive, slidably adjusted, a cylindrical anvil 64 drilled and tapped at one end and, on the other side, an internal thread concentric with said bore, into which a ring 62 is screwed. This ring 62, radially split, comprises a cone interior giving support to the conical head of a screw 63 screwing into the thread of the cylindrical anvil 64.
The anvil 64 is held in abutment against the ring 62 by the conical-head screw which, by its cone acting on the internal cone of the split ring 62, tends to open it and thus blocks it with the anvil 64 in the tapping of the frame 39. By unscrewing the screw 63, the split ring 62 and the cylindrical anvil 64 are released from the frame 39. It is then possible, by screwing or unscrewing the split ring 69 *
to advance or reverse the anvil cylin
drique 64 which can thus be blocked in the desired position in the frame 39 by
diary of the split ring 62, by tightening the conical head screw 63.
