Process for the production of a new Tegtil auxiliary. It has been found that a new Tegil auxiliary is obtained if the u-n-heptadecylbenzimidazole is condensed with cinnamic aldehyde, hydrogen is allowed to act on the resulting condensation product in the presence of a nickel catalyst and the hydrogenation product obtained is treated with a sulfonating agent.
As a sodium salt, the new product is a light-colored powder that dissolves easily in water and its aqueous solutions have excellent washing, dispersing and protective colloid properties.
Example: The mixture of 356 parts of u-n-heptadecylbenzimidazole, 210 parts of cinnamic aldehyde and 6 parts of boric acid is heated to 200 to 210 'under a CO 2 atmosphere and with stirring. A quarter of an hour after the reaction temperature has been reached, 14 parts of boric acid are added in small portions within 3/4 hours.
The resulting water is allowed to evaporate by using a condenser kept hot with steam and by letting a weak stream of CO 2 pass through the apparatus. To. After heating to -200 to 210 'for 24 hours, the reaction is complete. If necessary, the excess zimmaldehyde is then blown off with steam, the reaction product is separated off from the water and dried in vacuo on the water bath. The product, which is liquid at 100, forms a soft, somewhat stringy mass at room temperature.
For cleaning you can use the conc. alcoholic solution of the crude cinnamal-, u-n-heptadecylbenzimidazole with little conc. Put hydrochloric acid, the hydrochloride of the compound separating out in the form of a yellowish crystal mass. .
40 parts of cinnamal-, u-n-heptadecylbenzimidazole, 140 parts of alcohol, 15 parts of a nickel catalyst are heated to 92 for 3 to 5 hours under 20 atmospheres of hydrogen pressure in an autoclave equipped with a stirrer. After completion of the hydrogenation, the reaction mass is filtered off from the Ka catalyst, whereupon the solvent is evaporated off in vacuo. The residue forms a sticky, soft mass.
In a stirring vessel equipped with a stirrer, 50 parts of the above molten hydrogenation product are slowly added to 100 parts of sulfuric acid monohydrate, which is kept at a temperature of 1.0 to 15, by simultaneously ensuring that the The temperature of this mixture does not exceed 15.
After everything has been added and everything has dissolved homogeneously in the sulfuric acid, 90 to 100 parts of anhydride-containing sulfuric acid (24? until 15 is held.
The sulfonation is over when a sample of the reaction mass dissolves clearly in water. The sulfonation mass is poured onto 600 parts of ice, during which the disulfonic acid separates out and can be separated off from the aqueous sulfuric acid. After neutralizing the disulfonic acid with dilute sodium hydrogen solution and evaporating, the sodium salt of disulfonic acid is obtained.
