Comme il va de soi, et comme il résulte d'ailleurs déjà de ce qui précède, le procédé suivant l'invention ne se limite nullement aux formes de réalisation ayant été plus spécia lement indiquées;
Method for the establishment of articles, for example metal pipes, constituted by a strip of the helical type. The invention relates to a method for the establishment of articles, for example of metal pipes constituted by a strip of the helical type, being understood by "strip of the helical type" not only a strip having the shape of a helical surface , but also a strip of which a section normal to the winding axis, instead of being circular in shape, Lse would have a polygonal, oval, elliptical or any other shape.
On the other hand, the present invention also comprises an apparatus for carrying out said method as well as an article produced by this method.
The method of the type in question consists in applying a continuous strip on at least a certain portion of a die surface capable of giving it a shape such as that generated by a profile element moving along a closed plane curve and to make this strip take on a helical shape by moving it away from the aforesaid die surface in a direction parallel to the axis
of the latter.
The apparatus for implementing the process according to the invention is characterized in that it comprises a die-stamping device suitable for giving a continuous strip a transverse profile such that the aforesaid strip takes on a helical shape when it is 'é- map-of the aforesaid matrix surface.
The appended drawing shows, by way of example, an embodiment of an apparatus for carrying out the method according to the invention. This device is intended for the manufacture of flexible metal pipes.
Figs. 1 and 2 of this drawing are diagrams intended to facilitate understanding of the principle of which the invention is the implementation; Fig. 3 shows this apparatus in elevation and FIGS. 4, 5 and 6 finally represent, in partial sections respectively along lines IV-1T, V -V and VI-VI fig. 3, some details of said apparatus.
We know, according to Bour's theorem, that any helicoid is applicable on a certain surface of revolution and vice versa.
To establish a helical pipe, it is therefore possible, for example, to proceed in such a way that in a first operation, a strip, for example plane, is brought to match a mold surface of revolution and that. a second operation, the trans formed strip is moved away from the mold surface, so as to constitute a continuous helical strip.
There is shown in FIG. 2 a helical pipe element whose profile is represented by the broken line A-B-C forming an angle O, the side B-C being assumed to be small with respect to the part -A-B.
To constitute for example such a pipe element (fig. 2), we will first establish a surface of revolution, shown in fig. 1, whose meridian A17- & -C, forming an angle 19l, corresponds to the profile A-B-C according to Bour's theorem.
It is then sufficient, to pass from the element of surface of revolution: to the helical pipe element, to effect a certain pinching of the angle 0, until it takes the value O.
To establish either simply a helical pipe element according to fig. 2, but a flexible helical pipe of any length, from a flat strip for example, there is preferably a device as shown in FIGS. 3 to 6.
This device essentially comprises: on the one hand, own means. to ensure the forging of a strip, in the plane circumstance, following the meridian of a mold surface, of revolution in profile determined by the Bour relation, on the other hand, of the means suitable for ensuring the aforesaid bands an appropriate tension,
before the above. first means come into play, and, on the other hand, finally, means ensuring the separation of the transformed strip in a direction parallel to the axis of revolution of the mold and continuously, so as to constitute the flexible helical hose.
The aforesaid first means are constituted by a mold surface -of revolution, actuated in a rotational movement about its axis by any suitable motor system and capable -d'assure the drive of the strip to be die-stamped. This mold surface is formed using a wheel 1. The diameter of this wheel may vary depending on the dimensions of the strip to be wound up. The meridian - of this wheel will be given, as a function of the profile of the helicoid - which one wishes to obtain, by Bour's theorem.
It should however be noted that it is necessary to take into account, for the establishment of the meridian of the wheel, the elasticity of the material there to die which generally tends to return to a previous configuration. Also the meridian of the wheel will not correspond exactly to the profile indicated by Bour's formula, but to a profile which can be determined, by calculation, when we know the constants or the modulus of elasticity of the material used,
or by direct experience. This meridian will therefore have a shape such that after retraction, it is the profile provided by the Bour formula which is produced with all the desirable approximation. .
The pipe established by the device according to fig. 3 comprises a sheet 2 ', -of rec tilinear profile parallel to the axis, and a groove constituted by a sheet: & also of rectilinear profile and .également parallel to the axis, groove in which the sheet 4' of the The next turn is likely to catch on.
The wheel 1 therefore comprises a meridian generating two cylindrical layers 2 and 3, and three. parallel tapered layers 4,5 and 6.
In addition, at least one counter-application wheel 10 is provided, arranged in such a way that it forces the strip 7 to conform to the. wheel 1 on at least some part. This counter-dial will allow, by maintaining it. strip 7 pressed between its meridian and that of the wheel 1, to ensure the driving of said strip by adhesion.
It is advantageous to have several counter-knurls of this type, for example three, 8, 9, 10, distributed over a portion of the periphery of the wheel 1 in order to increase the adhesion surface.
There is. place, in addition, in particular when the meridian of the wheel 1 has re-entrants as in the apparatus shown, to ensure that the deformation of the. band is progressive. To this end, we then give the last application counter-wheel 10 tin profile such and its axis is arranged in such a way that the space remaining between it and the wheel 1 represents as exactly as possible the section that the band to be applicable on the helicoid that we want to establish.
Of course, the strip must in certain cases, before undergoing this succession of deformations in the rolling mill train which in a way constitutes the assembly of the wheel and the counter-wheels 1, 8, 9, 10, be subjected to appropriate heat treatments such as successive annealing, quenching, etc.
It should be noted that the dials or at least part of them may be mad or driven.
The means mentioned in the second place and specific to ensuring that the strip to be deformed has a certain tension consist, on the one hand, of at least one wheel 11 transforming (#n a tension To the action of the gravity of the counterweight 12, the position of which can be adjusted, voltage To that we could also create them by any other appropriate device, such as a brake on an axis for example, and, on the other hand, by a device intended to amplify the tension of the band.
For this purpose, a system of knurls 13 is provided, each of which the band follows a portion of the periphery, which has the effect of increasing by friction the resistance that the band 7 offers to the force of drag imparted to it by the wheel 1. There is provided such a number of these retaining wheels 13 that the strip is between the wheel and the die-cutting wheels against an optimum tension, which depends on the material which constitutes it.
This retaining device can be made integral with the motor system by a graining reference: the arrangement of this reference, on the one hand, and the diameters of the knurls, on the other hand, will determine the desired tension of the strip.
As a result of the action of this tension and that of the application wheels, the material is thus constrained to conform to the surface of the mold at a defined and sufficiently large angle while being less than one revolution, and not not just in the immediate vicinity of a meridian, as was the case in some processes. We point out that, in certain cases, one can dispense with these means to create tension.
The aforesaid third means, intended to ensure the separation of the strip after it has been applied to the mold, may include devices such as stops, rollers, knurls, worm screws, arranged in such a way that they produce a separation of said mold surface of the strip in a direction parallel to the axis of the mold surface. In general, it will be necessary to operate a displacement which exceeds the geometrically determined position corresponding to the helicoid to be obtained, so that this position is recovered after retraction.
In addition, we will take advantage of this axial elongation and the play of elasticity to operate certain overlaps of the successive turns and to insert, if necessary, one or more son of joints, so that the successive turns s' gradually mesh with each other, causing said seal.
The devices provided will be arranged so as to allow, moreover, to pinch, open or crimp certain angles which, during the transformation consisting in passing from the surface of revolution to the helical surface, must undergo certain variations, as well as 'set forth above with respect to angles O and 0'.
It goes without saying that, if the desired profile included marked curvatures. or acute angles which would require too delicate molds or too difficult operations due to the small spaces in which it would be necessary to operate, one could, after axial elongation, subject the strip to certain additional deformations.
In the apparatus shown in the drawing, these said third means are formed by three rollers 14, 15, 16, with oblique axes, intended to ensure the gripping of the angles formed by the conical plies and the cylindrical plies of the strip. The wheel 14 ensures the straightening of the sheet of the helicoid corresponding to the sheet 6 of the wheel 1, those corresponding to the sheets 4 and 5 are straightened by the passage between the wheels 15 and 16.
The wheels 14, 15 and 16 may be driving or idle, the latter solution having been adopted in the example considered.
The pipe formation process, after its deformation on the mold surface, is then as follows: The straightened sheet 6 'will then engage, thanks to the elasticity of the strip, under the sheet 4' of the previous turn which is already re-erected.
The wheels 15 and 16 will finally straighten the layers 4 'and 5' of the coil being manufactured and the coil of the pipe will be finished.
Advantageously, in order to be able to use knurls of various profiles, an adjustment device making it possible to vary their inclination.
This winding operation will preferably be supported on a mandrel integral or not integral with the mold surface and coaxial or non-coaxial with it.
The embodiment shown in the drawing shown in. this effect a short mandrel 17 from the same part as the wheel 1. This mandrel 17 does not fill the interior of the pipe, it does not force on the armature being wound up and it does not not opposed to the progression of the product that is formed.
All these aforementioned devices will be advantageously mounted on a suitable frame which includes all the necessary transmission and adjustment members.
The operation of such a machine for forming the res flexible helical pipes is sufficiently clear from the above that it is unnecessary to describe it.
This machine, the various devices of which have been described above and shown in the drawing, has numerous and real advantages, in particular that of allowing the continuous obtaining, and without creating significant internal tensions in the material, of pipes. flexible metal, or material of reté and similar plasticity ,, of any length, that of allowing, by simply changing the clearance of the rolls, to obtain, with the same machine,
pipes of different calibers, that, finally, to be of a simple realization.
As goes without saying, and as it follows moreover already from the foregoing, the method according to the invention is in no way limited to the embodiments which have been more specifically indicated;
it embraces, on the contrary, all the variants, in particular those where one would rotate the frame of the machine around a fixed winding mandrel, and those in which one would have recourse to a mold face whose section, normal to the axis, instead of being circular, would be a closed curve such as an ellipse, oval, polygon, etc., the other elements of the machine then being as appropriate for this modification.
