Process for the preparation of a new heterocyclic sulfonic acid. It has been found that novel, hitherto unknown heterocyclic sulfonic acids can be obtained if 2-mercapto compounds of the general formula are used

where X = S or 0, treated in alkaline media with oxidizing agents in amounts corresponding to at least three atoms of effective oxygen.
In contrast to the corresponding disulfides obtainable with differently directed oxidation (see German Patent No. 498747), the bodies obtained in this way represent water-soluble products. The assumption that the corresponding arylenothiazole-2-sulfonic acids are present here is supported by
that the new bodies, analogous to the α-sulfo acids of the naphthalene series, exchange the sulfo group for hydrogen when reduced with sodium amalgam, forming the corresponding arylenothiazole base bodies.
The present patent now relates to a method for the preparation of a heterocyclic sulfonic acid, characterized in that 2-mercaptobenzothiazole is treated in an alkaline medium with oxidizing agents in amounts which correspond to at least three atoms of effective oxygen and the free sulfonic acid the alkaline medium isolated by acidification.
The new benzothiazole-2-sulfonic acid crystallizes in colorless, needle-like aggregates, is soluble in water and alcohol, splits off sulfur dioxide when heated with hydrochloric acid, and forms water-soluble colorless salts which, when reduced with sodium amalgam, yield benztbiazene. Benzthiozol-2-sulfonic acid is said to be used as an intermediate for the production of dyes and pharmaceutical products.
Example ,: To dissolve 8.4 parts of 2-mercaptobenzothiazole in about 50 parts of dilute sodium hydroxide solution (40 parts of caustic soda per liter), 70-80 parts by volume of a technical sodium hypochlorite solution of about 15 vol / o slowly added with stirring. After the oxidizing agent has run in, it is filtered hot. The colorless crystal mass separated from the filtrate on cooling is filtered off with suction and dried. The body obtained in this way is very easily soluble in water and, when recrystallized from water, separates into colorless flakes.
Apparently the sodium salt of benzothiazole-2-sulfonic acid is present here. If sodium amalgam is allowed to act on the aqueous solution according to Friedländer and Lucht, B. 26, 3028, the benzothiazole with a boiling point of 230 o C can be isolated in good yield by etherification.
The free acid is obtained by acidifying the concentrated solution with hydrochloric acid in the cold. .
The yield is almost theoretical. If you let 6 parts of hydrogen peroxide in the form of a concentrated aqueous solution act on a solution of likewise 8.4 parts of mercaptobenzothiazole in about 150 parts of dilute sodium hydroxide solution (40 parts of caustic soda per liter), the sodium salt of benzthiazole is obtained after saturation with sodium chloride -2-sulfonic acid also in excellent yield.
