Process for the manufacture of cables. The present invention relates to a method of making cables, in particular multi-conductor cables of the type used in electrical telecommunications.
In one embodiment of the invention, a plurality of twisted pairs of individually insulated electrical conductors are combined and stranded or twisted together into a compact group or cable unit such that a predetermined excess length of certain of the individual conductors is present in the unit thus formed.
A majority of these units are then combined and twisted together into a compact cylindrical structure or cable of the desired dimensions in such a way that the additional length of the conductors of the individual units is absorbed or canceled out that the individual conductors in the finished cable have exactly the length required to form a "dead" cable, i.e. a cable that is not subject to movement of the strands due to excess material.
The cable so formed is usually finely covered with protective armor made of lead or other suitable material.
How the method can be carried out, for example, will be better understood from the following detailed description in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, in which drawings FIGS. 1 and 2 are schematic views of apparatus by means of which the method can be carried out, and Figure 3 is an elevation view, partially in section, of a multi-conductor cable made by the method, with a portion of the cable disassembled to more clearly illustrate the improved construction.
The first step of the embodiment of the method is to combine and twist a plurality of twisted pairs of individually insulated electrical conductors into a single compact group or so-called cable unit, in such a way that a predetermined amount of additional material is introduced into the unit.
A preferred form of apparatus by means of which this step of the method can be realized is shown schematically in Fig. 1 of the accompanying drawing and comprises a normally stationary drum or strand feed carrier 10 which can accommodate a plurality of rotatable coils or wire drums 11, each of which contains a twisted pair of individually insulated conductors 12, which are hereinafter referred to as strands.
The feed drums 11 are mounted with their individual axes parallel to and at a certain distance from the longitudinal axis of the machine and equipped with matching arms for controlling the tension 14-14, which have matching disks or rollers at their ends, via the strands 12 , which are drawn from the feeders, are passed through a sta tionary distributor plate 15 which are mounted in a bushing part of the carrier 10. The distributor plate 15 is provided with a plurality of mutually distanzier th openings to guide the individual strands and to determine their final rela tive positions in the finished cable unit.
A wing 18, which comprises a pair of spaced apart, interconnected annular discs 19 and 20, and tubular end portions 2'2 and '23, is rotatably supported in matching feet or stands 2'4-2-1. In the tubular part 22 of the wing, mounted so that it can be rotated therewith, there is a dimensioning die 2 (6, through which the strands are drawn after they have passed through the distributor plate 15).
The purpose of the dimensioning die 2'6 is to unite the strands into a single compact group or bundle 27 of circular cross-section, the group 27 then being passed through a sleeve: 2i8 which is arranged coaxially with the dimensioning die 26 and can be rotated with it.
A feeding head 3.0 of cotton or other suitable binding material is mounted on the sleeve 28, and it should be noted that the binding material is stripped from the head 30 and is helically wound around the united group of strands, as is it emerges from the end of the sleeve 28 . In this way the group of strands are tightly bound together so that the individual strands are held in their appropriate relative positions as predetermined by the distributor plate 15.
The bound group of strands is pulled over a guide disk 31, which is rotatably supported in the left tubular part 22 of the wing and is tangentially arranged with reference to the longitudinal axis of the wing. From the disk 31 the bound group of strands is guided through matching guide openings 32-3) 2 in the annular disks 19 and 20 of the wing and then around guide disks 33 and 34, which pass through the right tubular part 213 < / B> of the wing to be worn.
It can be seen that the disc 3, 3 is arranged tangentially with respect to a line which leads through the center point of the guide openings 32, and the disc 3, 4 is arranged tangentially with respect to the longitudinal axis of the wing. A take-off pulley 37, which preferably belongs to the caterpillar or pulling type, is arranged to pull the tied group of strands over the guide discs 31, 33 and 34 and to feed the finished cable to a winding drum 38.
The haul-off pulley 37 comprises a pair of endless conveyor chains 39-39 which are arranged to engage opposite sides of the cable unit. The conveyor chains slide around rollers or chain wheels 41 and 42 which are remote from one another, the chain wheels 42 being effectively driven by bevel gears 43-4,3, as well as a shaft 44 and bevel gears 45-45 from a main drive shaft, wel che with an electric motor 4 7 connected is. The take-up drum 38 is also driven by the main drive shaft 4, 6 through a pair of bevel gears 48-48.
The annular disks 19 and 20 of the wing 1,8 are provided on their circumference with gear teeth 50-50, which are in engagement with gears 51-51, which are attached to the main shaft 46, the wing with a predetermined relative Ge speed with respect to the trigger disc 37 and the take-up drum 38 rotates ge.
By means of planetary gear arrangements, which are generally designated by the reference symbols 52 and 53, the strand feed carrier 10 is suspended between the annular disks 19 and 20 of the vane and held stationary during the rotation of the vane.
The winding drum 38, when fully wound, can be removed and replaced by an empty winding drum, and the wound drum can be stored for future use or directly fed to a cable machine in which the cable unit 54 with other similar units in a cylindrical structure or cables of the desired dimensions are combined.
A preferred form of apparatus for uniting and stranding a plurality of individual cable units -54 in a cylindrical structure or cable is shown schematically in Fig. 2 of the accompanying drawings and comprises a stationary Ver divider plate 5.5, through which a plurality of cable units 54 of rotatable feeder tion drums 38 are pulled by means of a trigger disc 56, which trigger disc is mounted on a rotatable, annular support plate 58.
The distributor disk 55 has a plurality of spaced apart openings to guide the individual cable units and to pre-determine their final relative positions in the finished cable.
After they are passed through the distributor plates, the cable units are drawn through a dimensioning die 60, which unite the individual Kabeleinhei th 54 in a compact cylindrical Ge or bundle 61 of practically circular cross-section and compress, with the bundle thus formed afterwards is passed through a guide sleeve 62 which is arranged coaxially with the dimensioning die 60.
A paper wrapping head 64 is rotatably mounted on the sleeve 62 and carries a rotatable feed drum 65 for paper tape 66 or other suitable wrapping or binding material. The tape winder 65 can be connected by a belt 69 and 70 from a main drive shaft 72 which is connected to an electric motor 73.
to be driven. When the apparatus is in operation, the paper tape 66 is pulled off the feed drum 6 @ 5 and wrapped in a spiral shape around the combined bundle of cable pieces as it emerges from the end of the sleeve 62. The purpose of this is to maintain the compact shape that was given to the combined bundles of cable entries through the dimensioning die 60.
The paper wrapping 66 also serves to maintain the relative positions of the individual cable units 5.4, as predetermined by the distributor disk 5.5.
The bundle of cable units is, after it is bound, passed through a central opening 75 in the support plate 58 of the withdrawal disk 56, and it can be seen that the withdrawal disk 5Ü is mounted so that its receiving part is tangential with respect to the. The axis of rotation of the support plate 5.8 is arranged.
The take-off disk plate 58 is rotatably mounted in a bearing 7,6 and is provided on its circumference with gear teeth 7 7, which are intended to access a gear 78 that is wedged onto the main shaft 72, the plate 58 together with the Take-off pulley 56 and the Drehacbse ge is rotated, which coincides with the longitudinal axis of the be wegenden cable.
The extraction pulley 56 is driven by the rotation of the annular support plate 5 $, through bevel gears 80 and 81, the gear 81 being keyed on a shaft 84 which is rotatably supported by the plate 5! 8. A gear 85, which is keyed on the shaft 84, engages in a stationary Ge gear -, 8,6, which is attached to the bearing 76. With this construction, it is possible to rotate the shaft 84 by the rotation of the haul-off plate 5'8, and the shaft 84 in turn rotates the haul-off plate 56 through the gears 80 and 81.
By turning the rotating pull-off disc in the manner described above, the combined bundle of habeleinlieiten 54 is stranded or twisted into a cable with a lay length of well-defined length, as determined by the relative rotational speeds of the pull-off disc 56 and the pull-off disc plate 58. This stranding or twisting takes place between the stationary distribution disk 5: 5 and the rotating take-off disk 56.
The cable 88 thus formed is, after it has performed a few turns around the take-off pulley 56, fed to a winding drum 9C, which is mounted in a rotatable Ga bel 91 removably. The fork 91 comprises a pair of spaced apart ring-shaped structures 92-92, which also supports spaced rollers 93-93 and are rigidly connected by cross pieces 94-94.
The annular structures 92. have wreaths and lying on the circumference (; parts which have gear teeth 95-95, which are in a grip with gears 96-96, which are wedged on the main shaft 72, with the fork 91 and the winding drum 90 is rotated at the same speed as the haul-off disk 56 and the haul-off disk plate 518, this about an axis of rotation that coincides with the axis of rotation of the haul-off disk plate 518.
As a result, there is no additional twist between the take-off disk and the take-up drum. The take-up drum is rotatably mounted in the cross pieces 91 of the fork and can be driven from the drive shaft 84 of the haul-off disc through friction wheels 98 or 99 who the.
The vane 18 and the trigger disk 3, 7 are driven at such relative speeds that the individual strands of the unit 54 are twisted or stranded with one another with a lay length of a well-defined predetermined size or length. It can be seen that two twists are introduced into the strands in the same direction for each revolution of the wing 1.8. The first of these swirl occurs between the stationary distributor plate 15 and the guide disk 31 and the second between the guide disk 3, 8 and the take-off disk 37.
The length of the twist or lay length in the finished unit is determined by the relative Geschwindigkei th of the wing 18 and the take-off disk 37. These speeds can be changed in any suitable manner in accordance with the desired lay length. The combined unit of strands is tied sufficiently tight at the first twist to prevent relative longitudinal movement of the individual strands, and consequently the amount of material, or in other words the lengths of the individual strands in a given length of the finished unit on the Place of the first twist predetermined and correspond to the length of the lay that is generated by the first twist.
In this way, by introducing the second twist, the individual strands must be set in a lay length that is half the original lay length or the one for which there is enough material in the unit. This causes the outer strands to tighten and a resulting corresponding reduction in the average length of the unit, which results in an excess length of material in the inner strands.
This excess manifests itself in a bulging or buckling effect in the inner layers of the unit. When these units are combined in the cable by the apparatus shown in FIG. 2, they are twisted with one another in a direction which is opposite to the one in which the strands of the individual units are twisted, and with a lay length that is the same twice the amount of lay length in the units.
As a result, each lay length in the cable cancels exactly one lay length in the strands of the individual units and the final lay length in the one, when they are united in the cable, is the same as that of the cable and is also exactly the length that the material corresponds to the unit. In this way, the additional length of material in the inner strands of the unit is absorbed and the finished cable contains just enough material to represent a so-called "dead" cable.
A multi-conductor telephone cable made in accordance with the present invention is shown in FIG. 3, with a portion of it being disassembled to illustrate the improved construction. Cables of this type are usually provided with protective armor 101 made of lead or suitable material. It has been found that the individual strands of this cable have the correct lay length of the cable and, as a result, are free from the abnormal stresses which tend to curl or kink the cable when it is unwound from a drum.
In the manufacture of telephone cables, the method according to the present invention resulted not only in a saving of material, by predetermining the exact length of the individual conductors that are used in the fer term cable, but also in a considerably accelerated manufacture, since it is obvious that the units can be prepared in bulk and stored for future use, and can be quickly and easily combined into cables of desired dimensions in accordance with any future need.
