Control mechanism for fuel and Air intake valves and for exhaust valves of internal combustion engines. This invention relates to internal combustion engines of the kind in which the fuel is admitted to the cylinders in liquid form and is ignited by the heat of compression and in the cylinders. which each cylinder has both fuel and air inlet valves and an exhaust valve or valves.
Its object is the control mechanism of these valves. -This mechanism is charac- terized by a -pair of cam shafts which receive their rotational movement from the motor shaft, by a transmission shaft disposed between the motor shaft and one of the camshafts, by an epicyclic mechanism connecting the motor shaft and the transmission shaft, by an erpicyclic mechanism linking one to the other the camshafts , and by adjoining adjustment means with each epicyclic mechanism.
The appended -drawing represents, by by way of example, a form of execution of the object of the invention.
Fig. 1 is a vertical longitudinal section of it, and fig. 2, a side view, in Zn elevation. As can be seen from these figures, the two shafts to, cam a and b are parallel and placed across the heads of one and the other cylinder . On the shaft a is spun the gear wheel c and, on the shaft b, the gear wheel d. These wheels each attack for their part, the gear wheels f, y, of the same size,
the-which are mounted on rin-P another pair of shafts and mutually-. cry taken. so -that the two to cam shafts are connected to each other to by four gear wheels. The two wheels f, g are carried by the splits ses h, i, j, so that they can oscillate at a certain angle to the wheels c, d on the shafts to </ B > carne. The ribs h. i are mounted on shafts a, b and capable of pivoting around one and the other respectively.
The movement of the gearing wheels achieved is an epicyclic movement and allows the phasing ratio of the two to cam shafts to be modified. It is possible to use any suitable device, for example a screw operated by a 1 steering wheel and acting on the splice h, to effect the angular displacement.
One can communicate motion to shafts a and b, by one of the gear wheels mounted on them. In the arrangement shown, this transmission is operated by a pair of conical wheels n? ,, n, of which PuDe wz is wedged on the shaft to cam b and the other n on a vertical shaft o, which carries, at its lower end, a bevel gear p in mesh with the tonic wheel q fixed on the intermediate shaft r , itself connected to the shaft s of the motor by another epicyclic movement of any suitable shape.
This movement may be similar to that which has been described above and comprises four gear wheels joined together, two of which t, u, are mounted. respectively on the shafts r, s and -two v, w are carried by the ribs x, y, z. The couplers x, -, are mounted on the shafts r, s and capable of pivoting around one and the other respectively. By means of such a movement, the phase ratio between the motor shaft s and the vertical shaft o can be modified, at will, and hence , the to cam shafts.
It is clear that, by employing two epicyclic mechanisms as described, one has the faculty of modifying the phase ratio between the motor shaft and the cam shafts as well as between. the to cam shafts themselves. Thus one is able to act, in a manner as simple as it is convenient, on the operation of the engine, in the double relation of its speed and. of its power.
The invention is not limited to the embodiment described. since we have the latitude to modify secondary details to meet the various conditions posed. The example reproduced by the figure shows that the hand actuating organs act on the D epicyclic mechanisms, but it will be understood that any mechanical means , such as a regulator, can be used in the automatic control of said mechanisms so that predetermined operating conditions are satisfied.
