Engng. Chem.

Low-foaming wetting agent for mercerising and caustic baths The invention relates to the use of a mixture containing a) alkylsulphonic acids which have a sulphonic acid group on at most 7 carbon atoms, or their alkali salts and b) lower alkyldialkanolamines of the formula RN [(CnH2n0) mH] 2, where R is an alkyl radical having 2 to 5 carbon atoms, n is 2 or 3 and m is a number from 1 to 2, and c) esters of phosphoric acid with alcohols of 4 to 8 carbon atoms, some of which can be saponified, as a low-foam wetting agent for mercerising - and lukewarm baths.
The mercerising and caustic baths can also contain other customary auxiliaries.
It is already known from German Auslegeschrift No. 1 014067 that higher-molecular aliphatic sulfonic acids containing more than one sulfonic acid group per molecule are used as wetting agents for mercerizing and caustic baths, although other surface-active or foam-suppressing agents can also be used. However, the network effect of these products is unsatisfactory.
The use of alkyldialkanolamines as wetting agents for strongly alkaline baths is known from British patent specification No. 490 567. Various other auxiliaries, such as, for example, lower aliphatic sulfonic acids, can also be added here. These mixtures have the disadvantage that they foam strongly, and the wetting properties are not yet fully satisfactory. From German Auslegeschrift No. 1 042 525 the use of reaction products of sulfonic acids of higher molecular weight aliphatic or cycloaliphatic hydrocarbons with alkylolamines as wetting agents for alkaline baths is known, with surface-active or anti-foaming agents also being able to be added.
However, these mixtures, too, only give insufficient network and shrinkage values.
It has now been found that mixtures which a) alkylsulfonic acids which have a sulfonic acid group on at most 7 carbon atoms, or their alkali metal salts and b) lower alkyldialkanolamines of the formula RN [(CnH2n0) mH] 2, where R is an alkyl radical with 2 to 5 Carbon atoms, n is 2 or 3 and m is a number from 1 to 2, and c) esters of phosphoric acid with alcohols of 4 to 8 carbon atoms, some of which can be saponified, contain very effective wetting agents that are clearly soluble in the cold Represent mercerising and caustic baths.
The technical advantages of the mixtures to be used according to the invention as wetting agents result, for. B. from the tables below.
The greatly improved shrinkage values are particularly beneficial for the use of the mixtures. By using the phosphoric acid esters, practically foam-free mercerizing baths can be obtained. This is a particular advantage when working on Garnmecerisiermaschinen. The mercerising or caustic baths produced using the mixtures can optionally also be added other surface-active compounds or mercerising agents, such as ethylene oxide condensation products or cresols. If it appears desirable, aids known per se, such as.
B. lower alcohols are added.
As a starting material for the preparation of the alkyl sulfonic acids, which should contain a sulfonic acid group on a maximum of 7 carbon atoms, ge saturated aliphatic hydrocarbons, such as. B. a light gasoline boiling range 30-80 C or aliphatic and cycloaliphatic hydrocarbons with 10 to 20 carbon atoms, which can be branched. But straight-chain hydrocarbons are particularly advantageous with 10-20 carbon atoms, as z. B. obtained by molecular sieve separation processes. Molecular sieves are e.g. B. certain synthetic zeolites whose crystal lattices have spaces of defined dimensions, which in turn are accessible via pores of a certain width. These pores leave z.
B. an internal adsorption of n-paraffins to the exclusion of abnormal components. The n-paraffins are then desorbed and collected in a separate stage. The n-paraffins can also be separated using the so-called urea process.
The aforementioned molecular sieve method is used e.g. B. described in the publication by JJ Griesmer, HB Rhodes and K. Kiyonaga Petroleum and Coal, Natural Gas, Petrochemie, Volume 13 (1960), page 650, in the publication by Ch. K. Hersh Molecular Sieves, New York, 1961 , and in the periodicals Ind. Engng. Chem., 54 (1962), No. 5, page 13, and Erdöl und Kohlen, 12 (1959), page 40,6.
The urea process is explained in an article by E. Weingärtner in the journal Erdöl und Kohlen, Erdgas, Petrochemie 14 (1961), page 910.
Conveniently, in the lower hydrocarbons, such. B. a light gasoline, which has an average molecular weight of about 60, at least one sulfo group, in the higher hydrocarbons, such as an n-paraffin oil of average molecular weight 215, at least 2 sulfonic acid groups is introduced. The sulfonic acid alkali salts are advantageously produced from these hydrocarbons by sulfochlorination according to the Reed process and subsequent alkali saponification, but the thiourea process by Sprague and Johason or the method by Johnson and Douglas and the oxidation of alkyl sulfides with chlorine can also be used (See. F. Asinger chemistry and technology of paraffin carbons [1956] Berlin, page 395, 423-424).
Other methods of introducing sulfonic acid groups, such as sulfoxidation, can also be used.
The alkyldialalkanolamines of the formula R-N [(CnH2nO) mH] 2 to be used according to the invention should preferably be water-soluble. For example, n-propyl diethanolamine, isoamyl diethanolamine, ethyl bis [2-hydroxyisopropyl] amine, n-butyl bis [2-hydroxypropyl] amine or, preferably, butyl or isobutylamine, with 2 to 2 , 5 moles of ethylene oxide has been converted can be used. As a phosphoric acid ester, those of alcohol are used with 4-8 carbon atoms, z. B. tri-octyl phosphate, especially the tributyl phosphate and triisobutyl phosphate. These phosphoric acid esters retain their effectiveness even with a partial saponification.
The weight ratio of the alkyl sulfonates to the alkyl dialkanolamines should be 1: 0.3 to 1: 5, preferably 1: 0.8 to 1: 2. The proportion of phosphoric acid esters should be 1-15%, based on the sum of the sulfonates and alkyldialkanolamines, preferably 2-6%.
The wetting agents to be used according to the invention are available in both dilute and highly concentrated alkali solutions, as they are, for. B. be used for mercerizing or leaching cellulose fiber fabrics, also soluble in the cold.
EXAMPLE 1 Sulfochlorination: 120 g of sulfur dioxide and 91 g of chlorine are introduced into 54 g of a straight-chain alkane with an average molecular weight of 216 obtained by a molecular sieve process at 50 ° C. under irradiation with UV light. After blowing out, the thick oil sulphochloride contains 17.9% saponifiable chlorine. The yield is 128 g. The analysis found: S: 15.1%, Cl: 28.3%, i.e. the product corresponds to the formula (CH2) 15 (SO2) 2.5Cl4.1.
Saponification: 116 g of the above sulfochloride are added dropwise to 158 g of a 33.4% strength sodium hydroxide solution at 50-70 ° C. Then after one hour at 60-70 C, the mixture is stirred, cooled and then filtered off with suction from the precipitated cooking salt. The clear aqueous solution then has a sulfonate content of 46.3%.
Adjustment of mercerising agents: Solution A 16.7 g of isobutyl diethanolamine and 1.4 g of triisobutyl phosphate are added to 40 g of the sulfonate solution with stirring. 58 g of a clear solution with a content of 61% wetting substance are obtained.
Instead of isobutyl diethanolamine, the same amount of a reaction product of isobutylamine with 2.3 moles of ethylene oxide can be used with the same chemical success.
Solution B 16.7 g of isobutyl diethanolamine and 1.6 g of tributyl phosphate and 5.5 g of n-butanol are added to 40 g of the sulfonate solution from the above saponification, while stirring. 63 g of a clear solution are obtained which contain 55% wetting substances.
An equally good mixture of wetting agents is obtained if the same amount of n-butyl diethanolamine is used in place of the isobutylethanolamine.
Comparative experiment with solution A and B. Solution C 43 g of a commercially available alkyl monosulfonate (whose carbon chain consists of about 16 carbon atoms and which contains about 77% WHAT) are dissolved in 53 g of water. 37.5 g of isobutyl diethanolamine and 8 g of triisobutyl phosphate are then added. The solution then contains 501 net-active substance. The network values of this comparative experiment are compared in Table I below with solutions A and B according to the invention. Furthermore, the isobutyl diethanolamine is also tested.
The determination of the network value is carried out in accordance with DIN 53901 in a liquor of 300 g of sodium hydroxide. When using 5 g of active substance / l, the wetting times listed in Table I result.

<tb> Solution <SEP> C <SEP> 5 <SEP> 5.4 <SEP> 8.6 <SEP> 11.4 <SEP> - <SEP> 12.8 Example 3 (comparative experiments) 'A. Comparisons were made the wetting and foam values of the following solutions: Solution 1 (according to the invention): 40 g of sulfonate solution according to Example 1 16.7 g of isobutyl diethanolamine, 1.6 g of tributyl phosphate and 5.5 g of n-butanol (clear solution containing 55% wetting substances). Added dropwise over the course of an hour. After stirring for one hour, the reaction was complete. After filtering off some resinous impurities, the solution contains 30% sulfonate.
Adjustment of the mercerizing agent solution (= solution D): 70.5 g of the above light benzine sulfonate solution (containing 21.2 g sulfonate) are mixed with 37.5 g butyl diethanolamine, 26 g water and 8 g tri-isobutyl phosphate with stirring. The clear solution then contains 42% wetting substance.
This mercerizing wetting agent setting is clearly soluble in mercerizing liquors of 300 g sodium hydroxide / liter. The light gasoline sulphonate alone, i.e. without additives, creams up in these liquors after a very short time and is therefore unusable.
In the following Table II the shrinkage values of the products to be used according to the invention from Example 1 (= solutions A and B) and Example 2 (= solution D) are compared with 1. alkane polysulfonate from example 1, 2. a mixture of commercially available alkyl monosulfonate with isobutyl diethanolamine (solution C).
It can be seen from Table II that, given the good solubility of the products in the strongly alkaline liquors, the combination to be used according to the invention gives surprisingly good shrinkage values. Solution II: according to British patent specification No. 490 567): As solution I, but without tributyl phosphate.
The network determination was carried out in accordance with DIN 53901. The foam values were measured as follows: 50 cm3 of the solution was poured into a closable 100 cm3 measuring cylinder and shaken 10 times. The foam height was then read off immediately and after 1 minute. The wetting and foam values were each measured in 27% sodium hydroxide solution.

The wetting and shrinkage values of the following solutions were compared: Solution III (according to the invention): 40 g sulfonate solution according to Example 1 16.7 g n-butyldiethanolamine 1.6 g tributyl phosphate and 5.5 g n-butanol (clear solution containing 55% wetting substances).
Solution IV (according to German interpretation no. 1042 525): Reaction product from the acid chloride obtained according to Example 1 and 2 mol of ethanolamine per SO2Cl group according to the following equation: R-SO2Cl + 2 NH2-C2H4OH -> R-SO2NH- C2H4OH + NH.Y -C2H40H - HCl in which R stands for one equivalent of the multiply sulfochlorinated alkane radical. The determination of the network value was carried out in accordance with DIN 53901. The test solutions each contained 300 g sodium hydroxide per liter. The shrinkage values were also determined in liquors containing 300 g of sodium hydroxide per liter by the method from Pratikum der Textilveredlung, Otto Meechels, page 24 (1949), Springer Verlag, Berlin-Göttingen-Heidelberg.
The temperature was 20 C for the determination of the network value and 15 C for the determination of the shrinkage value. The measured values are shown in Tables 2 and 3 below.
