A titre d'exemple on a décrit ci-dessous et représenté au dessin annexé une forme d'exécution de l'invention, appliquée à la di rection d'une .automobile: La fig. 1 représente en perspective un couple de deux tiges articulées; La fig. 2 représente en perspective une pince élastique en fil métallique formant dis positif de rattrapage de jeu; La fig. 3 représente en perspective la pince de fig. 2 en place sur les tiges articu lées de fig. 1; La fig. 4 représente schématiquement en perspective les organes de la direction d'une automobile;
Les inconvénients @ de ces mouvements de shimmy sont bien connus. Difficulté de maintenir l'automobile en direction et fati gue en résultant, usure des pneus résultant des frottements sur la route dans le sens transversal, accroissement pouvant être éva lué à 10% du chemin parcouru par la bande de roulement des roues -et pam conséquent plus grande usure de celle-ci et plus grande con sommation d'essence, aggravation des jeux par suite des chocs continuels;
Device for taking up joint play, more particularly applicable to the steering device of automobiles for the elimination of shimmy. The invention described below relates to a device for adjusting play of articulations, applicable more particularly to the steering device:
automobiles for the removal of the shimmy, comprising two rods describing a limited angle, characterized in that it comprises an elastic clamp consisting of a spring wire shaped such that each of the branches of the clamp joined together by a spiral , is formed of two parallel threads joined by a stirrup resting on the corresponding rod -dante -of the joint on the side of the force to be exerted, the other of these stirrups, formed by the two ends.
wire, which can be opened, in order to make it possible to engage the clamp on the articulated rods without dismantling these or the parts to which they are connected, the clamp thus mounted exerting an angular force of constant direction on these rods with a view to always pressing in the same region one against the other the two bearing surfaces of the articulation and to take up the play as the wear progresses.
By way of example, an embodiment of the invention, applied to the steering of an automobile, has been described below and shown in the accompanying drawing: FIG. 1 shows in perspective a pair of two articulated rods; Fig. 2 shows in perspective an elastic metal wire clamp forming a positive play take-up device; Fig. 3 shows in perspective the clamp of FIG. 2 in place on the articulated rods of fig. 1; Fig. 4 shows schematically in perspective the steering organs of an automobile;
Fig. Pis is a side elevational view of part of the members of fig. 4, and FIG. 5 is a partial plan view of fig.4. The proposed joint, fig. 1, has two rods, one of which ends with a yoke 2 and the other 3 with an eye 4, they are joined by a bolt 5.
It is easy to realize that if these rods form a variable angle, -included between certain limits and if they are subjected to variable reactions of direction, it will happen that, according to the variable directions of the reactions, the frolic of the articulation will be repeated sometimes at one point, sometimes at another; this will therefore result in a lack of precision in the play of this articulation.
The elastic gripper, fig. 2, which must remedy this drawback, is formed -of two branches applying to the two rods and tend to maintain the angle of these rods more closed than it can be in the normal function of the joint. It consists of a metal wire forming a spring, the ends 6, 6 'of which are directed pa rallying along a first branch, and wound in a spiral in 7 and 7', extending in parallel at 8 and 8 ', to form a second branch ..
The middle: wire, which is the part joining the ends of the branches 8, 8 '; 9-shaped stirrup in a plane perpendicular to this branch. Likewise the two ends of the branches 6, 6 'which are the two ends - = of the wire, are re-cored so as to form two juxtaposed stirrups 10, 10', which can be opened to allow engage this caliper on the rod, even when coming from the side opposite to that on which it must exert its force.
This clamp is placed on the joint as seen in fig. 3, without removing any part, either from the joint or from the wach'ne. The closed branch 8 is first engaged; 8 'on the rod 1 @ so that the caliper 9 is on the side of the force to be exerted; for example on the outside of the rod 1. This can be done in general easily, without dismantling, whatever the arrangements of the other parts of the machine of which the articulation 1-3 is a part.
After that, by spreading the branches 6, 6 'of the other part of the lice clamp' open it from the angle of the two rods 1, 3, it is easy to engage one after the other on this rod 3 the stirrups or green 10, 10 'which terminate these branches, so that the turns 7, 7' forming springs, are located a little inside the joint.
It can be seen that under these conditions, the clamp always having a tendency to take an angle more closed than the limits within which the angle of the articulation 1-3 varies, this clamp will always exert on the two rods forces in the direction indicated by arrows 11 and 12. Therefore, in all movements of the joint, play will be resumed on roughly the same bearing surfaces and the joint will function precisely.
In the case of an automobile, we know that the front axle 13 (fig. 4) fixed: to the frame 14 by means of the springs 15, carries at its two ends clevises 16 which receive vertical axes or pivots wind. 17, solidaries of the flanges 18, 18 'which carry the rockets 19 on which the wheels are mounted.
The control in the direction of these front wheels is provided by the steering wheel 20, the steering rod, 21, the bevel gear 22 = 2: 3 the countershaft 24 and its worm 25, meshing with the sector 26, integral with <B> </B> the rod 27,:
which, by means of a -longitudinal control rod 28, is connected to the rod 29, integral with the flange 18 'of one of the front wheels. In addition, the two flanges 18, 1,8 'are connected by a coupling bar 30 articulated at its two ends on two connecting rods 31, 31' solidary -of the flanges 1,8, 18 '.
The yawing movement of automobiles is caused mainly by the play which exists in these steering members. In particular, without bare. The steering wheel 20 turns, the wheels can have a wobble to the right and to the left depending on the play which exists between the -pivots 17 and the eyes of their yokes 16 and in their joints 32, 3 of the longitudinal control bar 2'8.
This floating of the wheels is facilitated by the fact that the axle 13 (fig. 4 bis) being joined to the frame 14 by the springs 15 which continuously undergo deformation, the distance between the articulation 32 integral with the frame and the connecting rod. 29 connected to the; The horizontal control bar 28 varies continuously, so that there is constantly a slight variation in the deflection of the wheels. If the joints had no play, these steering variations would be without serious inconvenience, but they are amplified by the existing games.
The drawbacks of these shimmy moves are well known. Difficulty in maintaining the automobile in direction and resulting fatigue, tire wear resulting from friction on the road in the transverse direction, increase which can be evaluated at 10% of the distance traveled by the tread of the wheels - and therefore pam greater wear and tear of the latter and greater consumption of gasoline, worsening of the games as a result of continual shocks;
lastly, in the case of a bandage bursting, it is extremely difficult to avoid large swerves which often cause accidents. Likewise, because of the play existing in the joints 34 and 35 of the coupling bar, the flotation of the flange 18 relative to that directly controlled 18 'is aggravated, the two wheels do not follow parallel movements in the steering and the small vertical angle opening, provided between the two wheels to ensure steering stability, is not maintained.
In the embodiment described, these disadvantages are eliminated mainly by placing at the two joints 34, 3,5 of the coupling bar 30 clamps 36, 37 of the type shown in FIG. 2. As seen in fig. 5, the effect -de these clamps is to maintain the links 31, 31 'of the flanges 18, 18' constantly pressed against the ends of the bar 30 and consequently to maintain the two wheels in well-determined relative positions.
Likewise ,. the coupling bar 30 is strongly pressed against the ends of the links 31, 31 'and its distance from the pivots 17, 17', the distance on which the relative position of the wheels depends, remains fixed.
Another advantage of this device is that if the wheels are accidentally moved to the right or to the left, one of the grippers opens more and its tension increases, the other closes more and its tension decreases. As a result, the positive dis tends to bring the wheels back into the axis and consequently to increase the steering stability. Of course, the power of these clamps is provided so as not to interfere with the steering maneuvers .de auto mobile.
Likewise, two clamps 38, 39 of the type of FIG. 2 can be arranged at both ends of the longitudinal control rod 28. Their effect is to take the clearances of this control rod and to avoid shocks during accidental movement of the wheels to the right or to the left. and during the relative movements of the front axle 13 and of the articulation 32 resulting from the play of the springs 15.
The device described is suitable in particular for eliminating play in the steering bodies of automobiles. We know that these shimmy movements. or yaw, automobiles, that is to say the continual changes of direction of the front wheels, are caused mainly by the play which exists in the vertical pivots of the flanges which carry the horizontal spindles on which the wheels are mounted, thus than in the ball joints of the two-wheel tie rod and in the joints of the longitudinal steering control bar. All these games are eliminated by the device described, and the steering of the automobiles will be greatly improved.
Of course, the device will preferably be -provided to be able to adapt to all automobiles, in particular if the rods 1, 3 (fig. 3) on which it can be adapted are not straight or have protrusions, for example. example of bolts such as 40. In this case, the corresponding wire of the clamp will form a curvature 41 to avoid this obstacle.
