Assembly of wooden parts for automobile bodies. The present invention relates to the assembly of the wooden parts of bodywork, for example automobile bodies, and of which it makes it possible to reinforce the construction while making them lighter to a very great extent.
The pieces of wood, such as side members and uprights, which form the frame of automobile bodies are usually assembled by tenons and mortises, the tenon being glued to the mortise and fixed therein by a dowel or screw. In order to reinforce the assembly and to prevent the deformation of the angle formed by the two pieces of wood, a steel square is fixed to them by means of wood screws, the branches of which, of strong cross section, must be very long; in order to allow the required number of fixing screws to be placed without their moving too close together causing slots to form in the wood.
The assembly according to the invention comprises a spacer placed across the angle formed by the timber to be assembled and bolted to them by its ends so as to oppose a modification of this angle. The assembly is preferably constituted by a rigid spacer established in the form of a tube bent and flattened at its ends, each of which is fixed by a bolt and a nut to one of the pieces of wood which are assembled by tenon and mortise, glued and screwed or plugged, and the tenon can be retained in the mortise by a small square, each branch of which is fixed to the wood by a bolt and a nut.
As this square is only intended to prevent the tenpon from coming out of the wall, it can be very light, and the assembly formed by this small square and the tube placed across the angle is much lighter than the strong square which, until now, had to assume the function of these two elements.
On the other hand, the resistance and the firmness of the assembly are such that it is possible, with equal resistance, to reduce the cross section of the woods used. In addition, as the use of wood screws for fixing the reinforcing members is eliminated, it is possible to use wood of a lighter gasoline, which, although of equal or even greater strength than those usually employed, was not suitable for retain the screws from the old assembly. It follows from all of these factors that the assembly according to the invention makes it possible to reduce, for example, considerably the weight of bodywork boxes, while retaining their strength.
In the attached drawing: Fig. 1 is a view of the usual assembly, and FIG. 2 shows, by way of example, one form of the assembly according to the invention.
In fig. 1, a and b denote the pieces of wood assembled in c by tenon and mortise, and d is the square which, having to ensure the fixing of the tenon in the mortise and the deformability of the whole, must be very strongly proportioned and generally has a reinforcement e in the corner. The screws f which fix the bracket d to the timber a and b must be separated from each other by a certain distance which means that at the branches of a square a great length. In practice, the length of these branches is 200 to 300 mm, and the thickness from 10 to 15 mm.
In the embodiment of the assembly shown in FIG. 2, the woods a, b assembled by tenon and mortise in c, are retained on the one hand by a small square g fixed by the flat head bolts h. and on the other, by the spacer i placed across the angle a, b and whose bent and flattened ends are fixed to the timber by bolts k. Great lightness and strength are obtained by giving the spacer i the tubular shape. As for. the square g which must withstand only small efforts, it suffices to give it very small dimensions.
All the reinforcing pieces are therefore much lighter than the strong square in use until now, and this reduction in weight, combined with that resulting from the use of thinner and lighter wood, allows a reduction of 50 at 60% the weight of the bodywork boxes.
It is understood that construction modifications can be made to the example described.
