A device for suspending the front and steering wheels of a motor vehicle. In motor vehicles of known construction, the front axle E (fig. 1 of the accompanying drawing) connected to the chassis by means of the springs R describes, when the wheels encounter irregularities in the ground, an arc of a circle. ab having its center on the articulation A, from the anterior end of the spring B comes out with the side member L of the frame.
But, on the other hand, the same axle which is connected, via the steering levers and the steering control rod, to the axis B of the control rod tends to describe an arc of a circle < I> cd having its center in D on the ball joint through which the connecting rod attacks the steering control bar. These two movements are mutually exclusive: this results in shocks in the damping pads of the steering control rod, shocks which are transmitted to the steering wheel; the driver is subjected to these shocks, which is a notable cause of fatigue. In addition, there is some wobbling of the front wheels. This defect is all the more accentuated as the front suspension is more flexible.
The present invention relates to a device for suspension of the front wheels and for steering of a motor vehicle overcoming the aforementioned drawback and making it possible to obtain a steering always having the same softness, regardless of the flexibility of the suspension. and whatever the irregularities of the soil.
This result is obtained by articulating the front axle on the anterior end of a connecting rod, the other end of which is articulated on a lug integral with the frame, the posterior articulation being placed as close as possible to the ball joint. Through which the steering control lever attacks the steering control bar.
The appended drawing represents, in a completely diagrammatic manner, an exemplary embodiment of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a side elevational view of the front part of a frame provided with the improvement; Fig. 3 is a plan view. In the drawing, it is assumed that the sys tem includes an articulation rod on each side of the frame. One could however be satisfied with a single rod arranged on the side of the steering control.
As seen in this drawing, a connecting rod 1 is articulated, by its anterior end, on the front axle E and, by its rear end, on a lug 2 fixed to the frame. The articulation point 3 of the connecting rod 1 on the lug 2 is as close as possible to the steering ball joint D. As a result of this rise, the front axle E is forced, when the wheel encounters irregularities in the ground, to describe an arc of circle ef having its center at 3. The arc-of-circle ef is con centric, or substantially concentric to the arc g 7a as the front end of the connecting rod or steering control bar Zf 'described around the ball D.
Under these conditions, the steering bard all its smoothness whatever the unevenness of the front wheels and whatever also follows the smoothness of the suspension.
It goes without saying that to allow the aforementioned movement, it is necessary to connect the front end of the spring E to the side member by binoculars 4.
