Description

PAPER-BASED GEL THREAD, MANUFACTURING METHOD THEREOF
AND CIGARETTE COMPRISING THE PAPER-BASED GEL THREAD
Technical Field The invention belongs to the technical field of cigarettes, and particularly it relates to a paper-based gel thread, a manufacturing method thereof and a cigarette comprising the paper-based gel thread.
Background Art At present, methods of adding spices to heat-not-burn cigarettes have been proposed in the art, including adding blasting beads for cigarettes into a filter rod, or adding granular spice-loaded substances into a filter rod, or adding cotton threads loaded with spice substances into a cigarette filter rod, and the like. However, these methods for adding spices have their respective drawbacks. The method of adding blasting beads to the filter rod not only results in a high cost, but also puts high requirements on the production and compounding processes of the filter rod; the addition of granular spice-loaded substances to the filter rod also poses challenges to the production process; moreover, the addition of the spice-loaded cotton threads to the filter rod usually encounters the quality problems of exposing the cotton threads at a cutting position and burst opening of the filter rod, and meanwhile, the method of adding spice-loaded cotton threads has a low spice-loading quantity, and rapid release and it cannot continuously and effectively provide desired fragrances.
The invention, by implanting heat-not-burn cigarette with a gel spice line having the characteristics of low costs, easiness to produce, high loading quantities, good releasing effects and a long durability, can meet the demands of the cigarette on additions of various aromatic materials and smoking agents. Meanwhile, by using conventional highly-permeable molded paper and a single manufacturing method, a gel spice line having a high loading quantity, good releasing effects and a spice-loading durability may be manufactured.

Date Recue/Date Received 2021-07-27 Summary of the Invention Directed to the above problems, an object of the invention is to provide a paper-based gel thread, a method of manufacturing the same, and a cigarette comprising the paper-based gel thread.
The object of the invention is realized by the following technical solutions:
A first aspect of the invention is to provide a paper-based gel thread which is formed by twisting a composite paper-based strip, the composite paper-based strip comprising a functional material-loaded gel layer and a paper base layer.
Preferably, the end face of the paper-based gel thread has a diameter of 1-3mm, and a twisting degree of 4-15 twist/m, wherein the term "twist degree" represents the number of times for a spice line having a 1 m length rotating its axis.
Preferably, the paper base layer has an air permeability of 5000CU-15000CU, a gram weight of 25-40g/m2, and a breadth of 20-60 mm.
Preferably, the functional material-loaded gel layer comprises a functional material and a gel.
Preferably, the gel is polyethylene glycol.
Preferably, the functional material comprises at least one of a spice and a smoking agent.
When the functional material is a spice, the functional material-loaded gel may also be referred to as a spice-loaded gel.
A second aspect of the invention is to provide a method for manufacturing the paper-based gel thread according to the first aspect of the invention, comprising the steps of:
(1) heating a gel substance to form a colloidal substance, then adding a functional material to the colloidal substance, and mixing them to obtain a functional material-loaded gel;
(2) embossing the paper base layer to obtain an embossed paper base layer;
(3) coating the embossed paper base layer in the step (2) with the functional material-Date Recue/Date Received 2021-07-27 loaded gel in the step (1); and then cooling, gathering and twisting it to obtain the paper-based gel thread.
Preferably, the functional material is added in an amount of 5-60% by weight of the gel substance.
Preferably, in the embossing operation of step (2), the distance between two embossments is 1-5 mm.
Preferably, in the step (3), the gathering is performed in 2-5 stages. The gathering diameter at each stage is gradually reduced, and the inner diameter of the gathering device at the last stage is higher 0.2-1 mm than the diameter of the paper-based gel thread.
Preferably, in the step (3), the gathering is performed in 3 stages, and the gathering diameter at each stage is gradually reduced, and the inner diameter of the gathering device at the last stage is higher 0.2-1 mm than the diameter of the paper-based gel thread.
Preferably, the paper base layer has an air permeability of 5000CU-15000CU, a gram weight of 25-40g/m2, and a breadth of 20-60 mm.
Preferably, the gel substance is polyethylene glycol.
Preferably, the functional material comprises at least one of a spice and a smoking agent.
When the functional material is a spice, the functional material-loaded gel obtained in the step (1) may also be referred to as a spice-loaded gel, and the functional material-loaded gel layer may also be referred as a spice-loaded gel layer.
A third aspect of the present invention provides a cigarette comprising the paper-based gel thread according to the first aspect of the invention.
Preferably, the non-hollow section or sections of the cigarette are embedded with the Date Recue/Date Received 2021-07-27 paper-based gel thread according to the first aspect of the invention.
Preferably, each section of the cigarette is embedded with 1 to 3 paper-based gel threads, and each paper-based gel thread may be distributed and arranged at any position in the cigarette.
Preferably, the paper-based gel threads contained in the same cigarette are the same or different.
The paper-based gel threads of the invention have the following beneficial effects:
(1) A high spice-loading quantity is provided. According to design demands of heat-not-burn cigarette products, materials capable of continuously releasing a large quantity of loaded spices have to be added to filter rods. Addition of spices to existing cotton threads will result in a limited spice-loading quantity, and it cannot meet the design demands of cigarettes. However, for highly permeable molded paper, there are a lot of voids in fibers.
Thus, when the highly permeable molded paper is used to prepare gel threads having the same diameter as that of the cotton threads, the gel threads will load more spice materials, the spice-loading quantity can reach 3 times higher than that of the cotton threads having the same diameter, and thus they can more meet the design demands of the heat-not-burn cigarettes.
(2)A good spice retention is provided. When existing processes use cotton threads to load spices, the cotton threads that have been molded (the structure of a cotton thread is formed by a plurality of yarns that are twisted with each other, i.e., the multi-stranded cotton thread) are dipped in a spice and as the plurality of yarns are firmly twisted with each other, the spice only can gradually permeate toward the center of the cotton threads from the outer surface of the cotton threads so that on the surface of the cotton threads, there are more spices which are gradually lowered towards the center, and thus the cotton threads cannot reach a maximum loading quantity. Moreover, the spice materials loaded on the cotton threads will be more ready to volatize, and as the time goes by, more spice materials are volatized. In contrast, when using a highly permeable molded paper, the paper, in an unfolded state, is in contact with the spice, to achieve the uniform spice loading through the whole paper thickness, and then it is further twisted to form a paper-based gel thread so that the spice amounts at the surface is the same as the spice amount
4 Date Recue/Date Received 2021-07-27 in the center. The spices in the center will not ready to vitalize at room temperature, and during heating, the spices also can be effectively released through fiber voids.
(3) Low costs and easiness to realize are achieved. The above paper for cigarettes, through a single twisting process, can be used to produce a desired paper-based gel thread, and thus, as compared to spicing ways, like using blasting beads, it is low in costs and easy to realize.
The invention in which polyethylene glycol is used as the spice carrier has the following beneficial effects:
(1) Good stability: polyethylene glycol is well stable, colorless, tasteless, nontoxic and non-irritating, and it is not ready to react with other materials under general conditions; it will take a pyrolysis when temperatures are raised to 300 C, and when the paper-based gel thread is added to a heat-not-burn cigarette, its smoke temperature is far lower than 300 C.
(2) Good compatibility: polyethylene glycol has a good compatibility with a plurality of organic matters, and it can well dissolve aqueous and oily spices for cigarettes; thus, it can be used as a carrier of the spices for cigarette; other materials, like pectin, are hardly compatible with organic solvents and therefore cannot be used as a gel carrier for spices.
(3) Good spice retention and releasing effects: the polyethylene glycol has a high molecular weight and it is a waxy solid at normal temperature, so that at the room temperature, the spices for cigarettes that are dissolved therein will not be ready to volatize and dissipate; moreover, by heating the gel with the smoke produced in the smoking process of the cigarettes, polyethylene glycol will be melted and releases the essences and spices dissolved therein.
(4) Good moisture preservation: the polyethylene glycol has excellent moisture preservation, and it has the effect of improving sensory qualities of cigarettes.
The manufacture method of the invention has the following beneficial effects:
(1) In the invention, the paper base is subjected to an embossing pretreatment, which, on one hand, is favorable to more uniform, large-quantity and firm coating of the functional material-loaded gel, and on the other hand, which is favorable to gathering and twisting Date Recue/Date Received 2021-07-27 of the paper base, to avoid the paper base from being broken.
(2) The gathering operation of the invention adopts a multi-stages gathering with a gradually reduced gathering diameter, so that the functional material-loaded gel is cooled at the paper base whilst the paper base is gathered, and it is favorable to firmer fixation of the functional material-loaded gel on the paper base so that the gel is not ready to be extrude or fall off.
The cigarettes comprising the paper-based gel thread of the invention has the following beneficial effects:
(1) The kind, quantity and position of the paper-based gel threads embedded into the cigarettes can be freely adjusted to enrich cigarette tastes, and thus they can meet demands of smokers on different cigarette tastes.
(2) In the smoking process, the gel should absorb heats to be melted, and thus the gel threads, after being added, will have the effect of lowering temperatures of the smoke.

Date Recue/Date Received 2021-07-27 Best modes for carrying out the invention The following contents illustrate the invention with specific embodiments.
Example 1 A paper-based gel thread has the following structure:
The paper-based gel thread was formed by twisting a composite paper-based strips, and the composite paper-based strip comprised a spice-loaded gel layer and a paper base layer; the paper-based gel thread had an end face diameter of 2.8mm, a twist degree of twists/m, and a length of 100 m; the paper base layer was composed of a cigarette molded paper with an air permeability of 6000CU, a gram weight of 30g/m2 and a breadth of 60 mm; the spice-loaded gel layer comprised mint essence and polyethylene glycol.
The above paper-based gel thread was vertically cut along the transverse direction at random positions for multiple times, and the structure of the cross section was shown in Figure 1.
Comparative Example 1 Cotton threads with a diameter of 2.8mm, a length of 100m and a filament denier of 720 were selected and dipped into the same spice-loaded gel as that used by the paper-based gel thread as described in Example 1, to conduct the dip coating, and then cooling and coiling operations were performed to produce spice-loaded cotton threads.
Example 2 Tests for spice-loading properties:
The paper-based gel threads as described in Example 1 and the spice-loaded cotton threads as described in Comparative Example 1 were respectively weighed and calculated to obtain their gel-loading quantities and spice-loading quantities, and the specific results were shown in Table 1.

Date Recue/Date Received 2021-07-27 Table 1 Test results of gel-loading quantities and spice-loading quantities of paper-based gel threads and spice-loaded cotton threads Weight Loading Loading Calculated Length before Weight after quantity Categories quantity spice-loading (m) loading loading(g) per meter (9) quantity (g/m) (9) (g/m) Paper-based 100 81.58 254.1 172.52 1.7252 0.2875 gel threads Spice-loaded 100 38.64 92.62 53.98 0.5398 0.0900 cotton threads Comparison results:
As seen from Table 1, the spice-loading quantity per meter of the paper-based gel threads was significantly larger than that of the spice-loaded cotton threads, i.e.
the spice-loading quantity of the paper-based gel threads was larger than that of the spice-loaded cotton threads.
Example 3 Tests for spice retention:
The above paper-based gel threads as described in Example 1 and the spice-loaded cotton threads as described in Comparative Example 1 were used for respectively producing two cigarettes having the same structure, and the difference between them only resides in that the paper-based gel threads were substituted with the spice-loaded cotton threads. The two cigarettes were placed in an open environment with the same temperature and humidity conditions and they were respectively evaluated in views of smoking evaluations at the day when the cigarettes were produced, the 3 days and 10 days after producing. The number values 1 to 10 were used to represent the intensity of the mint flavor, and a higher number value demonstrated that the mint flavor was relatively more intense. The mint flavor at the day when the cigaretteswere produced was evaluated as "10", and the mint flavor at the other time were evaluated by scoring according to said standard. The results were shown in Table 2.

Date Recue/Date Received 2021-07-27 Table 2 Variations on evaluations for the smoking of two cigarettes with time Categories That day 3 days 10 days Cigarette containing paper-based 10 9 8.5 gel threads Cigarette containing spice-loaded 10 8 5 cotton threads Comparison results:
As seen from Table 2, in both the cigarettes, the mint essence would dissipate with the passage of time. However, the mint essence of the cigarette containing the spice-loaded cotton threads will more rapidly dissipate, and even in the later period, there is substantially no mint flavor. Hence, the spice retention of the paper-based gels is far superior to that of the spice-loaded cotton threads.
Example 4 In a cigarette consisting of a tobacco section, a hollow section of filter rod, a solid section A of filter rod, and a solid section of B of filter rod, a section of the paper-based gel thread was embedded at the axis of the tobacco section, shown in Figure 2.
Example 5 A method for manufacturing a paper-based gel thread for cigarettes, shown in Figure 5, comprises the following steps:
(1)Specialized paper for cigarettes that were selected to have an air permeability of 6000CU, a gram weight of 35g/m2and abreadth of 30mm were embossed, wherein the distance between two embossment peaks was controlled to be 3 mm, and rerolled to obtain the embossed paper base 1, wherein the CU was the unit for the air permeability of the paper for cigarettes, expressed by cm3/(min=cm2), and it referred to the flow (milliliters per minute cm3/min) of the air passing through a 1 square centimeter surface of a test sample measured at the pressure of 1 kilopascal (kPa).
(2) 10 kg of polyethylene glycol were heated to 75 C in a water bath, and after being melted into a colloidal state, added with 2 kg of mint essence, and then they were uniformly mixed by stirring for 10 min, to produce a spice-loaded gel.
(3) the spice-loaded gel obtained in the step (2) was place in a water bath kettle 2 to be continuously heated, with a heating temperature of 75 C;

Date Recue/Date Received 2021-07-27 (4) The embossed paper base 1 obtained in the step (2) was uncoiled in a speed of 8 m/min and horizontally conveyed onto a coating roller 3, to conduct the coating with the spice-loaded gel; after the coating, the paper base was conveyed 2 m, and in this procedure, the coated paper base was cooled; after the cooling, the coated paper base were gradually gathered by passing through the primary gathering device 4, a secondary gathering device 5, and a tertiary gathering device 6, and then the paper base coated with the spice-loaded gel was twisted in a rotational twisting device 7 according to the twist degree requirement of 7.67 twists/m, to produce a molded paper-based gel thread 9. At last, with a coiling device 8, the molded paper-based gel thread 9 was coiled;
the primary, secondary, and tertiary gathering devices had inner diameters of 4 mm, 3 mm, and 2 mm respectively.
The finished paper-based gel threads have a diameter of 1.637mm and a twist degree of 7.67 twists/m.
Through experimental tests, the paper-based gel thread per meter contained the spice-loaded gel in an amount of 1.0148g, and after calculations, it contained the mint essence in an amount of 0.1691g/m.The above paper-based gel thread was vertically cut along the transverse direction at random positions for multiple times, and the structure of the cross section was shown in Figure 1. On the paper base layer, the spice-loaded gel was uniformly coated, and it did not fall off.
Comparative Example 2 The experimental conditions were the same as in those in Example 5, only differing in that the gathering step was an one-stage gathering, and the gathering device had an inner diameter of 2 mm.
The finished paper-based gel threads had a diameter of 1.827mm and a twist degree of 7.67 twists/m.
Through experimental tests, the paper-based gel thread per meter contained the spice-loaded gel in an amount of 0.7039g, and after calculations, it contained the mint essence in an amount of 0.1173 g/m.The amount of the spice-loaded gel and the spice-loading Date Recue/Date Received 2021-07-27 quantity were evidently lower than those of the three-stage gathering process.
In addition, the spice-loaded gel layers at many positions were found to fall off from the paper base layer in the manufacturing process.
To sum up, the above depictions are only used as the specific embodiments of the present invention, but the protection scope of the present invention is not limited thereto. Any person skilled in the art can easily think of changes or substitutions within the technical scope disclosed by the present invention, which should be contained within the protection scope of the present invention.
