Description

HOMEGROWN CANNABIS STARTER PRODUCT
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates generally to horticulture, and more particularly to home-based cultivation of cannabis.
BACKGROUND
More jurisdictions are legalizing the consumption of cannabis for medical and/or recreational use, and in some instances, are permitting their citizenry to cultivate limited quantities in the home. For example, the Federal Government of Canada introduced legislation legalizing recreational consumption of cannabis and permitting limited home cultivation of up to four cannabis plants per residence.
Accordingly, in addition to the creation of a legal marketplace for harvested cannabis, this also creates a need for new and unique product offerings in relation to home-based cannabis cultivation.

According to another aspect of the invention, there is provided a method of producing homegrown cannabis starter products, said method comprising pre-packaging within a singular container a volume of growth medium and a plurality of cannabis plant cuttings received in said growth medium in a quantity not exceeding a predetermined maximum plant limit permitted by law.
The method may comprise placing said volume of growth medium and
3 said plurality of cannabis plant cuttings within a base tray of said singular container, and applying a cover film thereto in a position spanning an open top of said base tray to fully encompass said growth medium and said cannabis plant cuttings within said container.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
One embodiment of the invention will now be described in conjunction with the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is an overhead plan view of a homegrown cannabis starter product of the present invention.
Figure 2 is a cross-sectional view of the product of Figure 1 as taken along line A ¨ A thereof.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION
The illustrated embodiment of the present invention is a vendible product producible by authorized commercial growers of cannabis to serve the cannabis home cultivation market in jurisdictions allowing such home cultivation, whether for medicinal or recreational use. The product features a temporary disposable container 10 in which there is stored a volume of soil or other growth medium 12 in which a plurality of cannabis plant cuttings 14 from one or more off the commercial grower's mother plants have been deposited in a quantity not exceeding, and preferably equal to, a prescribed maximum number of cannabis plants that the consumer is legally entitled to cultivate in their home under respective legislation or regulation effective in the applicable jurisdiction of said home. In the illustrated example, the container has four cannabis plant cuttings therein, which equates to the maximum permissible quantity per household under the Canadian Cannabis Act, effective July 1, 2018.
The container of the illustrated embodiment features a base tray 16
4 having a bottom floor 18 and a series of peripheral walls 20 standing upright from the bottom floor 18 around the full perimeter thereof to contain the growth medium atop the bottom floor 18. A top opening of the base tray is delimited between the peripheral walls at the top ends thereof, which as shown, may feature out-turned flanges 22. The height of each cutting is less than the internal height of the container, and the stem of the cutting is inserted sufficiently deep into the growth medium so that the the cutting, including any foliage thereof disposed above the surface of the growth medium, stops short of the top opening of the base tray.
A cover 24 is secured to the base tray in a position spanning the entire top opening thereof, thereby covering off the interior space of the base tray so that the base tray and cover cooperatively encompass the growth medium and the plant cuttings on all sides. In the illustrated embodiment, the cover is a sheet of plastic film adhered to the peripheral walls of the base tray at the topside of the out-turned flanges, an has an outer perimeter closely confirming to the flanged perimeter of the base tray so as to only cover the top end of the base tray. In other embodiments, rather an adhered top sheet, a shrink-wrap film may instead span over the top end of the base tray, and wrap downwardly over the exterior of the peripheral walls and around the underside of the bottom floor to secure the film to the base tray.
The cover 24 thus cooperates with the base tray to fully encompass the growth medium and cuttings therein, thus preventing spillage in the event the container is inadvertently tilted or overturned. The cover also has sufficient deflection resistance to allow stacking of multiple containers atop one another for space efficient packing, storage and transport without harming the plant cuttings safely contained within the base tray under the protection of the cover. As illustrated in Figure 1, the cover 20 may be transparent, or at least translucent, thereby enabling exposure of the plant cuttings
5 to light when the container resides in a naturally or artificially illuminated environment with the top end of the container in an exposed state not concealed by another stacked container or other object. The cover 20, or the peripheral walls of the base tray at elevated locations thereon situated near the top end of the container above the top surface of the growth medium, may be perforated with small openings to enable limited airflow between the internal space of the container and the surrounding environment.
The base tray may be made of plastic, paper-fibre or other known materials.
The container may be accompanied by printed instructions for the consumer on how to transplant the cannabis plant cuttings from the temporary container to an intended growing location, whether for soil based or hydroponic growth.
The printed instructions may employ written text, photographic or illustrated visuals, or a combination thereof. The printed instructions may reside on a label applied to the base tray or cover of the container, or on a separate user manual, whether a single instruction sheet or multi-page booklet. Such sheet or booklet may for example be housed inside the container with the growth medium and cuttings, for example within the further confines of a protective envelope or packet that prevents the printed instructions from direct exposure to the growth medium, moisture, etc.
Additionally or alternatively, the container may be accompanied by a readable resource for directing the consumer to an internet address at which online transplantation instructions are hosted, whether in written or visual form, or a combination thereof. Visual instructions may include still images, whether photographic or illustrated, and/or video, whether live action or animated. The readable resource may be human-readable, e.g. a printed URL address, or a machine-readable code, e.g.
a quick response code (QR code) in which a URL address is encoded for self-directing of an Internet enabled device (e.g. smart phone, or tablet computer) to that address
6 when the code is scanned. The readable resource may be printed on an adhesive label applied to the base tray or cover of the container.
A recipient of the container simply removes the cover 20 to gain access to the cuttings and growth medium inside the tray, and then transplants the cuttings from the relatively small temporary container suitable growth sites, for example transplanting each one to a larger individual container or pot than the small temporary base tray originally shared by the cuttings. Through the purchase of a single container pre-loaded with multiple cuttings, the recipient obtains an easy and convenient start to a home cultivation project without exceeding the plant quantity limits dictated by applicable legislation.
While the base tray in the illustrated embodiment is square-shaped in plan view and has obliquely inclined side walls of inverted trapezoidal shape, it will be appreciated that the shape of the tray and upstanding angle of the peripheral walls may vary within the scope of the present invention.
Since various modifications can be made in my invention as herein above described, and many apparently widely different embodiments of same made, it is intended that all matter contained in the accompanying specification shall be interpreted as illustrative only and not in a limiting sense.
