Abstract

A compression fabric which is lightweight, breathable, and which possesses temperature and odor controlling qualities. Moreover, this improved compression fabric, such as for a sock, provides graduated compression to increase blood circulation and enhance leg energy and reduce leg fatigue.

Description

!
COMPRESSION FABRIC
This invention relates generally to a compression fabric, and more particularly to an improved compression fabric which is lightweight, breathable, and possesses temperature and odor controlling qualities. Moreover, this improved compression fabric, such as for a sock, enables graduated compression to increase blood circulation and enhance leg energy and reduce leg fatigue.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PRIOR ART
It is well known that users wearing fabric, including professional athletes, are always looking for the next best in high performance materials and clothing, to seek out clothing which wicks moisture, which is lightweight and reduces odor.
The use of compression materials in clothing is not new. For example, some companies claim their compression clothing, if worn during athletic activities, for example, will increase blood flow and focus muscle energy for improved performance, while diminishing soreness, tightness and possible injury. Some studies suggest wearing compression gear after a workout diminishes fatigue, swelling and inflammation.
Regardless of these claims, the comfort, strength and breathability features of compression garments possess intriguing advantages for daily use.
For example, compression style items may aid in the prevention of deep vein thrombosis and as a possible means to help manage post-thrombotic syndrome. Graduated compression hosiery is known for managing varicose veins and used for everyday wear to prevent tired, swollen and generally uncomfortable legs associated with travel and pregnancy. The compression force of these types of items helps to minimize fatigue, and keep legs from swelling.
Compression apparel and compression items are often constructed from elastane, I

Y
which is the commercial name for Lycra . However, there is a need for an improved compression fabric which combines the comfort and softness of natural cotton and the lightweight, breathable, temperature and odor controlling qualities of Dryarn . In this regard, the present invention substantially fulfills this need.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
It is an object of the present invention to provide an improved compression fabric which is lightweight, breathable, and possesses temperature and odor controlling qualities.
Moreover, it is another object of the present invention to provide an improved compression fabric which is non-banded, so that it is completely uniform and seamless.
It is another object of the present invention to provide an improved compression fabric, such as for a sock that enables graduated compression to increase blood circulation and enhance leg energy and reduce leg fatigue.
According to one aspect of the present invention, there is provided a compression fabric comprising from about 35 to 55% wt.% cotton; from about 24 to 44 wt.%
polypropylene; from about 2 to 22 wt.% polyamide; and from about 4 to 19 wt.%
elastane.
According to another aspect of the present invention, there is provided a compression fabric comprising from about 40 to 50 wt. % cotton; from about 29 to 39 wt. %
polypropylene; from about 7 to 17 wt. % polyamide; and from about 4 to 14 wt.%

elastane.
According to another aspect of the present invention, there is provided a method for manufacturing a compression fabric comprising the steps of providing the fabric with
2 from about 35 to 55 wt.% cotton; providing the fabric with from about 24 to 44 wt.%
polypropylene; providing the fabric with from about 2 to 22 wt.% polyamide;
providing the fabric with from about 4 to 19 wt.% elastane ; and manufacturing the fabric to have a greater compression at a lower end thereof, and a compression that decreases towards an upper end thereof.
The advantage of the present invention is that it provides an improved compression fabric which is lightweight, breathable, and possesses temperature and odor controlling qualities. Moreover, it is another advantage of the present invention to provide an improved compression fabric which is non-banded, so that it is completely uniform and seamless.
Yet another advantage of the present invention is to provide an improved compression fabric, such as for a sock that enables graduated compression to increase blood circulation and enhance leg energy and reduce leg fatigue. In particular, providing a sock that possesses a greater compression towards an ankle region of the sock, and a compression that decreases towards an upper end of the sock.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT
In the preferred embodiment, the woven compression fabric of the present invention is comprised of Egyptian Cotton, polypropylene, polyamide and elastane. In this manner, the present invention combines the comfort and softness of natural cotton and the lightweight, breathable, temperature and odor controlling qualities of polypropylene, which in an exemplary embodiment, is Dryarn . It is well known that Dryarn has a wicking effect, which conducts perspiration away from the skin to the outside where it evaporates.
This leads to a sweat expulsion rate that is nearly eight times higher than polyester, which leaves the wearer dry and comfortable. The fiber also does not allow humidity to collect close to the skin, and it retains none of the microorganisms that create odor in garments
3 i made from synthetic fibers. As one skilled in the art would recognize, Dryarn is a metallocene based polypropylene fiber, usually having a specific weight of 0.9 g/cm3, which is extremely light, and which can provide significant weight savings compared with other fibers on the market.
It will also, of course, be understood that other varieties of cotton could also be utilized, as would be apparent to one skilled in the art.
In an exemplary embodiment, the compression fabric of the present invention, which is ideally suited for a sock, possesses a greater compression towards an ankle region of the sock, and a compression that decreases towards an upper end of the sock. In an exemplary embodiment, this compression is about 20 mm/Hg towards a lower end of the sock, such as near the ankle region, to a compression of about 15 mm/Hg towards an upper end of the sock. The sock also is manufactured to be non-banded (without constricting banding), so that it is completely uniform and seamless.
Ideally also, the compression fabric of the present invention is a ribbed knit fabric, both on the inside as on the outside and can, in an exemplary embodiment, also possess anti-microbial properties.
In a further exemplary embodiment, the compression fabric of the present invention comprises from about 45% Egyptian Cotton, from about 34%
polypropylene, from about 12% polyamide, and from about 9% elastane, it being understood that modifications to this arrangement and configuration would be apparent to one skilled in the art. This embodiment increases blood circulation to enhance leg energy and reduce leg fatigue.
4 i In a further exemplary embodiment, in the compression fabric of the present invention the elastane (which provides the compression qualities to the sock) is integrated in with the polypropylene (preferably Dryarn ) and the polyamide and cotton.
elastane, as one skilled in the art would recognize, is a synthetic fiber known for its exceptional elasticity, and is a polyether-polyurea copolymer.
The present invention has been described herein with regard to preferred embodiments.
However, it will be obvious to persons skilled in the art that a number of variations and modifications can be made without departing from the scope of the invention as described herein.
