Description
BALE WRAPPING DEVICE, HARVESTING APPLIANCE AND METHOD
Description The present invention relates to a bale wrapping device for enveloping a bale with an enveloping material, having a receiving apparatus for receiving the bale during the enveloping operation, and having at least one wrapping arm, to a harvesting appliance, preferably of the baler, combination baler or bale wrapping appliance type, having a bale wrapping device, and to a method for adapting such a bale wrapping device.
Bale wrapping devices are used to package bales, preferably bales formed by balers from harvested material, for example from grass. These bales are encased completely in an airtight material, for example in a film, in order to obtain relatively small silage quantities.
Conventional bale wrapping devices can be part of harvesting appliances, for example of the autonomous bale wrapping appliance type, which are attached to a baler or some other appliance that delivers bales, and receive a bale from the baler after the conclusion of a baling operation. Alternatively, they can represent a constituent of a bale wrapping appliance that is independent of a harvesting appliance or a baler, for example in such a way that an already pre-baled bale is placed onto the bale wrapping device of the bale wrapping appliance in order to envelop said bale independently of the actual baling operation. However, a bale wrapping device can also be a fixed or releasable, or rigid or movable, for example pivotable, constituent of a harvesting appliance, for example of a baler or of a baling/wrapping combination also known as a combination baler, wherein the wrapping device is arranged functionally downstream of the actual baling device.
Bale wrapping devices usually have a receiving device of the wrapping table type, which receives a bale formed or delivered by a harvesting appliance configured for example as a baler. Depending on the baler and/or the particular requirements placed on the baler, the bales to be received can have different diameters. In known bale wrapping devices, in order to adapt to different bale diameters, complicated conversion of the bale wrapping appliance is frequently necessary in that components that carry enveloping material, for example wrapping arms, have to be adjusted in terms of height and/or spacing.
The problem underlying the invention is considered that of specifying a bale wrapping device, a harvesting appliance and a method for adapting a harvesting appliance of the type mentioned at the beginning, with which the abovementioned disadvantages are overcome.
According to the invention, the object is achieved by the teaching of Claims 1, 9 and 10, respectively. Further

Further
2 advantageous configurations and developments of the invention can be gathered from the dependent claims.
According to the invention, a bale wrapping device of the type mentioned at the beginning is configured such that the receiving apparatus is configured to be adjustable in such a way that the bale centre point of the bale to be wrapped takes up an at least substantially identical position with respect to the at least one wrapping arm for different bale diameters. This simplifies the adaptation of a bale wrapping device to bales with different diameters. If the bale as such, or the bale centre point of the bale for each bale diameter or for each bale diameter for which the bale wrapping device is configured to be suitable, takes up an identical or at least substantially identical position, it is possible to at least substantially dispense with adjusting other components of the bale wrapping device, in particular a wrapping arm or several wrapping arms and/or a frame of the bale wrapping device.
The receiving device can have one or more support means.
The one or more support means can act on the bale circumference of the bale to be enveloped in order to stabilize it in a position or location suitable for enveloping. It is conceivable for the support means to be configured in the form of a for example one- or multipart dish, as single- or multi-tined forks or spikes that penetrate, preferably regionally, into the bale, or in any other suitable form.
Preferably, provision is made of
3 at least two support means which are arranged at least substantially in a plane and/or in a horizontally spaced-apart manner, such that the bale can be received between these support means. The support means can be configured in one or more parts. In particular, the support means are configured in the form of one or more support rollers which are provided in a fixed or preferably rotatable manner on the receiving device.
If the receiving device and the support means as such are provided so as to be vertically adjustable with respect to the wrapping arms, then, depending on the size or the diameter of the bale to be formed, the bale as such or the bale centre point thereof can be moved up or down by a vertical adjustment and can thus be brought easily into a position suitable for enveloping. If a plurality of support means, for example in the form of support rollers, are provided, these can each be raised individually or together, or in a coupled manner, and/or together with the support device. However, provision can also be made for the support means to be provided, instead or furthermore, so as to have a variable horizontal spacing with respect to one another. A
variation in spacing of the support means and in particular of support means configured as support rollers causes the support means to act on different circumferential regions of the bale. If the support means are spaced further apart, this causes a lower position of the bale as such or of the bale centre point, with the bale size remaining constant. If the support means move

4 closer together, the bale is raised, with the result that its centre point also takes up a higher position. A
suitable spacing selection allows constant positioning of the bale or of the bale centre point for different bale diameters.
If the support means are provided on receiving arms that are pivotable with respect to the frame, then both the height of the support means and the spacing thereof can be varied in a simple manner and together. The receiving arms can be attached to a frame of the bale wrapping device at a pivot point, preferably by means of a pivot bearing, and are preferably provided so as to be pivotable about an axle that is horizontal and/or arranged vertically with respect to the direction of travel.
If the support means as such, or the receiving arms with the support means provided thereon, at least approximately form the limb ends or the limbs of a V, then the bale can be received or supported within the limbs of the V. Preferably, the vertex is formed by the pivot point or the pivot bearing.
If at least one belt that loops around the support means is provided, then the bale can be supported at its bale diameter by the belt over a relatively large region, with the result that improved stabilization can be achieved.
It is advantageous for the at least one belt to have a different tension depending on the diameter of the bale, or on a respective position, assigned to the bale diameter, of the support means, preferably such that, in a bale with a smaller diameter, the tension is less, and in a bale with a greater diameter, the tension is greater, than in a bale with an average diameter. In this way, support for bales with different diameters, and therefore different expected weights, can be adapted not only to the bale diameter but also to a bale weight. A
larger and presumably heavier bale can thus be supported by a belt with higher tension, and a bale with a smaller diameter and a smaller expected weight can be supported by a belt with less tension. This can be achieved easily by changing the spacing of the support means.
The receiving device, the support means and/or the receiving arms can be adjusted manually or by a motor.
The adjustment can take place for example by means of one or more actuating means in the form of hydraulic cylinders, rack and pinion drives or lever devices or other suitable means or a combination thereof, and be acted upon by a pressure source provided on the harvesting appliance or a tractor or be actuated by pump or crank drives or other suitable devices.
Such a bale wrapping device can be provided on a harvesting appliance, preferably on a harvesting appliance of the baler, combination baler or bale wrapping appliance type. The bale wrapping device can be an integral part of such a harvesting appliance or also be provided as an option.
A method for setting a bale wrapping device according to the invention, preferably in conjunction with an above-described harvesting appliance, teaches that the bale wrapping device is adjusted for adaptation to bales with different diameters in such a way that the centre point of the bale takes up at least substantially an identical position for different bale diameters.
The invention and further advantages and advantageous developments of the invention and configurations of the invention are explained and described in more detail in the following text with reference to the drawing, which shows an exemplary embodiment of the invention, and in which:
Figure 1 shows a baler having a downstream bale wrapping device, and Figure 2 shows a schematic illustration of support rollers, supporting a bale, in different positions or for different bale diameters selected by way of example.
Figure 1 shows a harvesting appliance 10 in the form of a baler configured as a round baler with a downstream bale wrapping device 12. In the exemplary embodiment shown, the harvesting appliance 10 has a frame 14, a chassis 16, baling elements 18, a baling chamber 20 and a feeding apparatus 22. Also provided is a drawbar 24 by means of which the harvesting appliance 10 is attachable to a towing vehicle (not shown), for example an agricultural working machine or tractor. In principle, the harvesting appliance 10 can be of any conventional structural type.
According to the figures, the harvesting appliance 10 is a round baler. Such an appliance can have for example a fixed or variable baling chamber and be used both in agriculture and in an industrial context. Preferably, the baler 10 is of the structural type according to German patent application 101 53 540.6, the disclosure of which is incorporated herein.
The frame 12 is formed by a welded and/or screwed assembly and is supported on the underlying surface by means of a chassis 16. The chassis 16 is illustrated in the drawing in a tandem axle design with two axles 26, each of which is provided on each side with a wheel 28. A
configuration with only one axle or with support by means of crawlers or other suitable means is also conceivable.
The bale wrapping device 12 has a frame 30, a wrapping table or receiving apparatus 32 for receiving the bale 34 to be enveloped, and wrapping arms 36 which can be set in motion by means of a suitable drive (not shown) in order to envelop the bale 34 having a diameter D with an enveloping material 38, for example a film. In their end regions 40, the wrapping arms 34 have enveloping-means carriers 42 for receiving an enveloping-means supply 44, for example of the roll type.
The receiving apparatus 32 has two receiving arms 46 which are provided in their end regions with support means 48 that are configured as support rollers. The support means 48 are looped around by a flexible belt 50 (only shown by way of example), wherein it should be noted that it is also possible for a plurality of belts 50 to be provided. The receiving arms 46 are attached to the frame 30 of the bale wrapping device 12 at a pivot point S so as to be pivotable about a horizontal axle 54 oriented transversely to the direction of travel by means of a pivot bearing 52, and their position can be changed by means of actuating means 56 which are embodied as hydraulic cylinders 58 in the exemplary embodiment shown.
Generally, in operation, a bale 34 is delivered by the harvesting appliance 10 after the end of the baling operation and is transferred to the bale wrapping device 12 by means of known means that are not illustrated in more detail. The bale 34 is received by the receiving apparatus 32 such that the bale 34 is supported on its circumference 60 by the support means 48. In this case, the belt 50 is provided in a supporting manner. After the bale 34 has been received by the receiving device 32, the bale is enveloped with enveloping material 38 by means of the wrapping arms 36.
Reference is now made to Figure 2 in which the support means 48 and the receiving arms 46 carrying the support means 48 are illustrated in three different positions P, P', P" corresponding to three different bale diameters D, D', D" that are selected by way of example. If the bale wrapping device 12 is intended to receive a bale 34 which has a diameter D', D" that differs from the previous bale size, then the actuating means 56 pivot the receiving arms 46 upwards about the axle 54 in the case of a smaller bale diameter D' and downwards about the axle 54 in the case of a larger bale diameter D". The support means 48 move in a corresponding manner along a circular path determined by the receiving arms 46 and thus upwards and inwards with respect to the pivot bearing 52 when the receiving arms 46 are pivoted upwards to receive a bale 34 with a smaller size. If the receiving arms 46 are pivoted downwards to adapt to a bale 34 with a larger diameter D", the support means 48 accordingly move downwards and outwards.
As a result of the change in the relative position of the support means 48 with respect to one another, the tension in the belt 50 wrapping around the support means 48 is also changed, specifically such that, when the support means 48 move upwards and inwards to adapt to a bale 34 with a smaller diameter, the tension in the belt 50 is reduced and, when adapting to a bale 34 with a larger diameter, is increased.
Thus, if the bale wrapping device 12 is adapted to a bale 34 with a smaller size or smaller diameter D', then, as a result of the receiving arms 46 being pivoted upwards both with respect to the pivot bearing 52, as the member for connecting to the frame 30, and with respect to the wrapping arms 36 and thus as a result of a change in position of the support means 48 upwards and inwards, the bale 34 takes up a position P' that is located higher with respect to the wrapping arms 36 and is thus suitable for a wrapping operation. In such a position of the support means 48, the belt 50 has reduced tension that is thus suitable for a smaller bale 34. This is favourable, since it should be assumed that a bale 34 with a smaller diameter D' also has a lower weight.
If, by contrast, the bale wrapping device 12 is adapted to a bale 34 with a larger diameter D", then the bale 34 takes up a position P" that is located lower with respect to the wrapping arms 36 and is thus suitable for a wrapping operation for a bale 34 of this size. In such a position of the support means 48, the belt 50 has increased tension that is thus suitable for a larger bale 34. This is favourable, since it should be assumed that a bale 34 with a larger diameter D" also has a greater weight.
Expressed in general terms, the respective bale centre point 62 of the bale 34 takes up at least substantially an identical position Pm with respect to the wrapping arms 36 or the frame 30 during the enveloping operation for all bale diameters D, D', D" that are to be set.
Provision can be made for the actuating means 56 to be actuable jointly or independently of one another such that the receiving arms 46 can in turn be pivoted independently or preferably together, or in dependence on one another. It is also conceivable to connect the receiving arms 46 by means that are not shown, such that a change in position of the receiving arms 46 can be achieved either by means of only one actuating means 56 or dependent adjustment can be achieved by means of two or more actuating means 56.
Alternatively, it is conceivable for the receiving arms 46 to be actuated manually or by means of an alternatively configured motor which acts for example on the pivot bearing 52 or can be integrated into the latter or acts on the receiving arms 46 by means of a rack and pinion drive or telescopic drive. Provision can furthermore be made of securing means (not shown) which secure the receiving arms 46 in their respective position with respect to the frame 30.
suitable spacing selection allows constant positioning of the bale or of the bale centre point for different bale diameters.
If at least one belt that loops around the support means is provided, then the bale can be supported at its bale diameter by the belt over a relatively large region, with the result that improved stabilization can be achieved.

larger and presumably heavier bale can thus be supported by a belt with higher tension, and a bale with a smaller diameter and a smaller expected weight can be supported by a belt with less tension.
