Description

Housing For Electrical Components For An Armoured Vehicle, In Particular A Fighting Vehicle The invention relates to a housing for electrical components, in particular capacitor elements, for an armoured vehicle, in particular a fighting vehicle.
Electrical components, such as capacitor elements, are usually arranged in a housing in order to protect them against external influences.
In particular, in this case, protection against overheating must be ensured, since the heat can lead to an operational breakdown or even to a destruction of the electrical components.
In a vehicle, in particular in a fighting vehicle, the available structural space is greatly restricted, whereby this problem is further magnified in modern vehicle systems by the continuous increase in electrical components.
It is known to use capacitor elements, e.g. two-layer capacitors which are also called ultra caps or super caps, as buffer stores for energy. To reduce electrical circuit lengths, the capacitor elements and thus also the housing should be placed as close as possible to the power electronics of the, vehicle, as a result of which heat problems occur as power electronics usually represent a heat source.
In addition, in vehicles, in particular fighting vehicles, the problem comes up that it should be possible to use the vehicles over a broad temperature range in various regions of
2 the country, so that the housing must also be designed accordingly.
The object of the invention is to design a housing of the aforementioned kind in such a way that it can be used in vehicles which have a limited structural space and are designed for a Large temperature range.
Some embodiments of the invention relate to a housing for electrical components, for an armoured vehicle, wherein the housing is insertable into an external vehicle recess and wherein the housing has a ballistically armoured lid with a thermal insulation and a base with a thermal insulation.
The basic idea of the invention is to design the housing in such a way that it can be used in an external recess of the vehicle.
Within the meaning of the invention, an external vehicle recess is deemed to be a recess of the outer vehicle covering, e.g. of the vehicle roof or the side wall of the vehicle. As the housing used represents a part of the outer vehicle covering, the housing comprises a cover which is ballistically protected, to which end it has, in particular, an armoured plate, preferably made of armoured steel. To prevent the electrical components in the housing from being heated by solar radiation, the lid additionally has a thermal insulation. In addition, to ensure that the housing can be arranged above a heat source, such as e.g. power electronics, the base of the housing is also provided with thermal insulation. The thermal insulation of the lid and/or the thermal insulation of the base preferably comprise a thermal insulation material, in particular a thermal insulation mat.
To reduce the effect of solar radiation, the thermal insulation of the lid can comprise a sun-reflecting element which has a high
3 degree of reflection of the solar radiation. To prevent the heated sun-reflecting element from reflecting in direction of the electrical components, a thermal insulation mat can be placed under the sun-reflecting element. In order to additionally enable a circulation of air, an air gap can be provided between the ballistic armouring and the sun-reflecting element.
In an especially preferred embodiment, the housing has at least two chambers which are sealed so as to be airtight and electrically connected with a cable lead-in. At least one capacitor element, preferably a two-layer capacitor, can hereby be placed in one chamber and the control electronics for the capacitor element in the other chamber.
In addition, an electrical lead-in can be placed in the base of the second chamber which is preferably provided with a plug connection on its underside, so that the control electronics can be connected to elements in the vehicle interior. Due to the airtightness of the chambers, it is hereby possible to design the second chamber encased and to only provide the first chamber with a lid that is removable and can be attached so as to be airtight.
Preferably, the housing has mounting means in order to install it on the vehicle in the external vehicle recess. It is especially preferred if the mounting means hereby comprise a mounting flange, so that the preferably tub-shaped housing can be easily connected, preferably screwed together, with the vehicle via the mounting flange.
To further improve the efffect against overheating, thermal insulations, in particular thermal insulation mats, can also be
4 placed on the side faces of the housing.
The invention also comprises an armoured vehicle, in particular a fighting vehicle, with a housing which has already been described and which can be inserted in an external vehicle recess, in particular in a recess of a vehicle roof. This housing can be placed above a heat source, in particular power electronics. As a result, it is possible to place the electrical components, in particular the capacitor elements, as close as possible in the region of the power electronics and at the same to protect it from the inside against heating and against bombardment from the outside. In addition, in known vehicles, there is often a free space between power electronics and external vehicle covering which can be closed with a lid and which can be used through to the housing. The lid-like housing can hereby replace the lid in an interchangeable manner. Preferably, the housing is inserted into a recess of a turret of the vehicle.
An advantageous example of an embodiment of the invention will be described with references to Figures 1 to 3, showing Fig. 1 a housing with electrical components in a perspective representation with partially masked elements;
Fig. 2 the housing of Fig. 1 arranged on a vehicle in a cross section; and Fig. 3 the turret of a fighting vehicle with a housing according to Fig. 1.

In a perspective representation, Fig. 1 shows a housing 1 which can be used in an external vehicle recess of a turret 40 of a fighting vehicle shown in Fig. 3. The housing consists of a housing tub 2 on which a mounting lid 3 with a mounting flange is securely arranged. Furthermore, the housing 1 has a lid 4 comprising an armoured plate made of armoured steel which can be screwed together with the mounting lid 3 via bores 18.
The housing 1 comprises two chambers 12 and 13, several capacitor elements 8 designed as two-layer capacitors being arranged in the first chamber 12, said capacitor elements 8 being electrically connected via two cable lead-ins 19 to control electronics 9 which are arranged in the second chamber 13 and situated on a bedplate 10, wherein the chambers 12 and 13 are sealed by means of a partition 23 so as to be airtight. The capacitor elements 8 are installed in the housing tub 2 so as to be shock absorbent.
Insulating mats 14 and 15 are arranged below the base 11 of the tub 2 of the housing 1. To increase the protection against heat, the side walls 17 of the tub 2 are also, in addition, provided with a thermal insulating mat.
A thermal protection, consisting of a solar reflection element 6 and heat insulating mat 5 directly below it are arranged above the armoured lid 4.
The thermal insulating mat 5 and the solar reflection element 6 are connected with the lid 4 via spacers 7, whereby there is an air gap 22 between the thermal insulating mat
5 and the armoured lid 4.
The base below the bedplate 10 is provided with an electrical lead-
6 in, a plug connection (not shown) being arranged on the underside of the base, so that the control electronics 9 can be connected with elements in the vehicle interior.
Fig. 2 shows a section of the turret roof which has an external vehicle recess with a recess edge 30 into which the housing 1 is inserted, so that the housing seals the external vehicle recess and the hollow space below it. Power electronics 20 with associated connections 21, which represent a heat source during operation due to the heat loss, are arranged below the edge 30.
The housing 1 is screwed together via the mounting lid 3 by means of the bores 16 on the edge 30 of the external vehicle recess.
Contrary to the housing 1 of Fig. 1, the base 11' is designed double-walled, a thermal insulating material being arranged in the resultant space 14'.
As can be seen in Figs. 2 and 3, the housing 1 with the electrical components, as a supplementary set, can also be built into existing vehicles having an existing external vehicle recess and adequate structural space below the external vehicle recess.
This is especially advantageous in two-layer capacitors, as these have only been used recently as power buffer stores, so that a simple retrofit of older vehicles is possible by means of the invention.
