DETAILED DESCRIPTION
[0008] A locking plate tie rod generally identified by reference numeral 10 and a filter generally indicated by reference numeral 100, will now be described with reference to FIG. 1 through 6. A prior art locking plate tie rod 200 and filter 300 will be discussed with reference to FIG. 7 and 8.

Structure and Relationship of Parts:
[0009] Referring to FIG. 2 and 4, locking plate tie rod 10 includes a plate body 12 having a first face 15, a second face 17, a filter-facing side 19 positioned adjacent to a series of spaced main discs 14 and a receiver 16 for receiving a tie rod support 18, such as a series of support rods as shown. The filter-facing side 19 has a profile that defines a cutout 20.
Referring to FIG. 1, a locking member, in the form of an inner locking plate 22, extends across cutout 20. As depicted in FIG. 2 and 4, inner locking plate 22 is a separate component from locking plate tie rod 10 that is attached to plate body 12. This makes it easier to manufacture, and allows plate 22 to be replaced if necessary. Referring to FIG. 1, inner locking plate 22 has an opening 24 for receiving a cleaner blade rod 26.
Cutout 20 is sufficiently large to receive an attachment end 28 of cleaner blades 30, such that, referring to FIG. 4, a plurality of spaced cleaner blades 30 are positioned between first face 15 and second face 17 of the plate body 12. Referring to FIG. 5, cleaner blades 30 may be an assembly of a central blade 31 with sandwich plates 33 on either side of blade 31. Sandwich plates 33 help maintain a proper spacing between blades 31. In order to improve the density of blades 30, blade 30 that is adjacent to locking plate 22 may have only one sandwich plate 33.
[0010] Referring to FIG. 6, filter 100 has a series of spaced main discs 14, where the spaces between discs 14 defme the filter openings. Referring to FIG. 5, in a preferred embodiment the spaces may be made using spacer washers 51. A series of cleaner blades 30 are inserted between the spaced main discs 14. Blades 30 have an attachment end that is supported by a cleaner blade support rod 26. Locking plate tie rod 10 is supported by a tie rod support 18, which is preferably a series of support rods, as shown in FIG.
6. In the depicted embodiment, blades 30 are positioned on either side of filter 100.
However, in order to provide additional support, additional tie rods 10a may be provided that attach to tie rod supports 18. These tie rods 10a do not support any blades 30 and therefore do not require a cutout 20 or an inner locking plate 22 as with locking plate tie rods 10. Tie rods 10a are used to provide structural support between support rods 18 on the sides of filter 100 where there are no blades 30. It will be understood that different designs for the provision of blades 30, tie rods 10 and 10a, support rods 18, etc. may be used, and that blades 30 may be positioned using a variety of spacings around filter 100, depending on the intended use and preferences of the user/manufacturer. However, it has been found that the depicted design provides adequate structural stability and cleaning between discs 14 with acceptable manufacturing costs when used for filtering heavy oil.

Comparison with Prior Art:
[0011] Referring to FIG. 7 and 8, prior art locking plate tie rod 200 and filter 300 are shown. Similar reference numbers refer to similar elements. Filter 300 uses a spacer main disc 36 that is positioned to correspond with locking plate tie rod 200.
Spacer disc 36 may either be solid, or a series of narrow discs that are stacked without spacing.
This is necessary as the design of locking plate tie rod 200 does not permit blades to be positioned between the two inner locking plates 22. By contrast, filter 100 has a pattern of discs 14 and blades 30 that extend along almost the entire height of locking plate tie rod 10 as shown in FIG. 5 with only a small gap due to inner locking plate 22. In one embodiment (not shown), it may be possible to avoid any gaps by staggering the height of locking plate tie rod 10. In this situation, the gap corresponding to the position of inner locking plate 22 may have a cleaning blade on the opposite side. As a result, every gap would be cleaned with some only being cleaned by a single blade instead of two.

Assembly and operation:
[0012] Referring to FIG. 3, a series of spacer rods 50 and a cartridge spindle 52 extend upward, and main discs 14 are placed over the rods 50 and spindle 52. While only eight spacer rods 50 are shown, in a preferred embodiment there are twelve, with corresponding holes in main discs 14. Spacer washers 51 are then placed over the rods 50 and between adjacent main discs 14 to create the desired filter spacing. Once complete, the locking plate tie rod support rods 18 are attached, locking plate tie rods 10 are positioned in the approximate position using set screws 60, and the end caps 56 are secured, similar to what is shown in FIG. 5. However, additional main discs 14 are included instead of a spacing plate 36. Preferably, there are four tie rod support rods 18, and the position of locking plate tie rod 10 is staggered along the length of filter 100. The filter 100 may then be placed on its side, and blades 30 are inserted between main discs 14, starting at one end and moving toward the other. As a locking plate tie rod 10 is encountered, cleaner blade support rod 26 is inserted through blades 30 and through inner locking plate 22 on locking plate tie rod 10. Locking plate tie rod 10 can then be positioned in its final position. Because of cutout 20, additional blades 30, and therefore spaced main discs 14, can be included, such that the space that would normally be filled by a solid plate 36 or a series of unspaced discs can be used as a filter.
Cutout 20 is either open toward first face 15, second face 17, or both if locking plate 22 is intermediate the two, depending on the construction of locking plate tie rod 10, such that blades are inserted from the direction of the applicable face 15 or 17. In one example, it was found that increasing the number of discs 14 and blades 30 in this manner increased the filter capacity by about 20%. However, the actual increase will depend on the spacing of the locking plate tie rods 10. When filter 10 is in use, discs 14 are rotated relative to blades 30 by applying a driving force to, for example, to cartridge spindle 52.
Alternatively, blades 30 could be rotated relative to discs 14. Blades 30 act to remove any build-up of residue or debris as they move between discs 14.
[0013] In this patent document, the word "comprising" is used in its non-limiting sense to mean that items following the word are included, but items not specifically mentioned are not excluded. A reference to an element by the indefinite article "a" does not exclude the possibility that more than one of the element is present, unless the context clearly requires that there be one and only one of the elements.
[0014] The following claims are to be understood to include what is specifically illustrated and described above, what is conceptually equivalent, and what can be obviously substituted. Those skilled in the art will appreciate that various adaptations and modifications of the described embodiments can be configured without departing from the scope of the claims. The illustrated embodiments have been set forth only as examples and should not be taken as limiting the invention. It is to be understood that, within the scope of the following claims, the invention may be practiced other than as specifically illustrated and described.
